Pañchāñga (Almanac) Calendar – 2015 Panchāngam: Panchāngam provides five basic elements of astrology, Tithi (lunar day or time taken by moon to move 12 degrees), vaara (a day from sunrise to sunrise), Nakshtra (the Zodiac constellation in which the moon is found on particular day), yoga (half-day) and karana (angle between sun & moon). These are the main aspects calculated according to the Solar, Lunar and the Earth positions. These five elements play an important role in calculating the muhurthas (auspicious days) for any Hindu rituals. There are three prevalent methods of calculation for Panchāngam used in different parts of India. Souramanam (Solar calendar - prevalent in Kerala and Tamilnadu), Chandramanam (lunar Calendar - prevalent in Andhra, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other states of North India), Baarhaspatyamaana (Jupiterian calendar -which is said to be prevalent in North India). Panchāngam in India and US: The lunar movements calculate Tithi and Nakshtra, the main angas of Panchāngam. When one Tithi or Nakshatram begins and ends, it happens at the same instance all over the world, which is called the Universal time. Based on the time zones, the Tithi and Nakshatram will begin/end at different local timings in different parts of the world. Since India has a little variation in terms of sunrise/sunset, Panchāngam computed for one area of the country is generally applicable to the other parts of the country as well. But when it comes to other parts of the world, same universal time should be translated into the corresponding local time in terms of the longitude and latitude. As North America’s PST is 13 ½ hours past Indian Standard Time, it is not appropriate to use the calendar, prepared for Indian local time. Keeping these aspects in mind, our astrologers and scholars prepared Panchāngam calculated for our local time, i.e. PST & PDT. In the current Calendar we have put all efforts to provide as many details as possible. For further details like Muhurthas, please consult our scholars, personally or through email. Daily use of this calendar helps everyone to understand and monitor the prevailing planetary forces of the day. Accuracy of the above mentioned Panchāngam attributes depending upon Moon's motion are more crucial for the reliability of Panchāngam. Because Moon is the fastest among all the heavenly entities shown in traditional Panchāngas, Tithi, Nakshatra, Rasi, Yoga, and Karana depend on Moon's motion. There are three popular meanings of the term Panchāngam. Vedic astrology meaning is "five attributes" of the day. The five attributes are: Tithi: Ending Moment (EM) of elongation of the Moon, the lunar day, the angular relationship between Sun and Moon (True Moon minus True Sun). One Tithi

equals 12 degree difference between Moon and Sun. Nakshatra: EM of asterism of the day, that is, the stellar mansion in which Moon is located for an observer on Earth. One Nakshatra equals 13

degrees: 20 minutes. There are 27 Nakshatra in 360 degrees. Rasi: The zodiac signs or rasi - EM of the sidereal sign of the zodiac for the Moon. Tithi: The tithi is the longitude of the Moon minus that of the Sun. First tithi (Prathama) begins when tithi is 0° and ends when it is 12°; 12° to 24° is dvitiya, 24° to 36° is Tritiya etc. 168° to 180° is Poornima, 180° to 192° is Dark fortnight Prathama 192° to 204° is Dvitiya.etc. 348° to 360° is Amãvãsya. So, there are 30 tithis -15 are called Suddha (Shukla) Paksha (Bright fortnight or waxing phase) the other 15 Bahula (Krishna) Paksha (Dark fortnight or waning phase). The tithi of a day is usually taken to be the tithi current at sunrise on that day. Since the moment of the sunrise is not the same at all places it is to be noted that occasionally a tithi current at sunrise at one place may not be current at sunrise at another place. It is also possible for a particular tithi to be current at sunrise on two successive days. So when two successive days have the same tithi associated with them, the 1st day is called Tridina. It is also likely that a tithi may begin after sunrise and end before the next sunrise. In such a case a tithi is skipped over and that day is called AVAMA. The concept of good timing is provided by this calendar and one can take advantage of auspicious moments by avoiding when the creative forces of this planetary system are on the wane. Note on the Tithi and Nakshatra ending times: If a tithi or a nakshatram ends before sunrise on a particular day, then it is shown in the calendar with 24 hour format with previous day’s time. For example, if a tithi ending time is 6:15am and the sunrise on that day is at 6:45am, then it is shown as 30:15 in the calendar.

ANNADANAM is a sacred activity. In Hinduism, there is no better puja and ritual than feeding hungry living beings. ANNADANAM is MAHADANAM i.e. the greatest donation in Hindu religion and is an essential part of Sanatana Dharma tradition. There are numerous stories in Hindu scriptures that extol the glory of Annadanam – prominent being Goddess Parvati appearing as Goddess Annapurnaeshwari and feeding Shiva.

- Food supports the body to attain Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Donors of Annadanam are considered as donors of Pranadanam. The person, who participates in this sacred Annadanam, will be blessed by divine Gods. It is said that glory, strength and fame will be acquired in Trilokas by Annadanam. The donor of Annadanam will get first entry in the heaven. Annadanam is performed for redemption of sins, to attain piety and to get speedy recovery from illness. The glory of family and holiness of a temple increases with each Annadanam. A Message from the Founder, Chairman and Chief Priest of VEDA I would like to extend my heartfelt and prosperous wishes for the New Year 2015 to all my dear and near devotees of VEDA, in the bay area as well as from all parts of the country. With the grace of Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy, 2014 was another great year for the temple, with the growing popularity nationwide and increasing number of devotees attending and participating in various activities in the temple.

Melpeetha Nagaram has transformed into a Punya Kshetram with the presence of Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Devasthanam. We recently started the second phase of the temple construction, which includes the inner sanctums and shikharams for all deities at the temple. Our wish is for the devotees to be able to see the Pradhaana Shikharam for Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy from the nearby freeways, which will protrude up to 20 feet on the top of the ceiling. Our puranas say “�शखर दशर्नं �चन्त नाशनम”् - watching the shikharam relieves worries and sins of devotees. I request all devotees to come forward and participate in the shikhara construction.

Our plan is to celebrate the temple’s second anniversary after Prana Pratishta with Kumbhaabhishekam for all the shikharas (�शखर कुम्भा�भषेकम)्. By participating in Kumbhabhisheka, one can attain name, fame, along with accumulating prosperity and progeny. It is rare to witness and participate in such Kumbhabhishekam in a life time and it is the duty as a human being to utilize such opportunity. My humble request to daily devotees is to help spread the word and propagate our dharma.

The temple has become a great platform to local arts, like dancing, singing, language learning, spiritual classes, yoga classes, meditation classes, and many local organizations. Lord Satanarayana Swamy’s blessings will always be there with local organizations like Silicon Andhra, BATA, Tamil Manram, Kannada Kuta, Bay Area Vasavi Foundation (Sakhi), etc. In addition, we have been conducting Vedam classes on every Wednesday evening from several years.

We now have six priests serving the VEDA temple, Jagadish Sharma, Nagendra Sharma, Sivarama Sharma, Mrutyunjaya Sharma, Anjaneya Kumar, Phani Raja Kumar and one more priest Pavan Kumar Sharma who makes maha prasadam. All of them are instrumental in temple’s success with their knowledge, excellent work and coordination and they have been doing a tremendous job. I express my humble gratitude to the current president Sri Krishna Viswanatham and office bearers, who are helping the temple to run smoothly. Hard work, commitment and dedication shown by several new and existing volunteers and the executive committee members are instrumental in its tremendous growth of the temple. I also convey my heartfelt wishes to Dr. Srinivas Vadrevu and family, who helped with the calendar preparation with dedication. In 2014, our Devasthanam experienced record devotee attendance and participation in all major programs we have conducted. To meet the increasing demand for religious services and spiritual needs of the devotees, we have added two new priests and a full-time religious cook. This has translated to a stable revenue base to sustain temple’s operations. In addition, continued enthusiasm and support from our devotee community has helped us to embark on Phase II of the construction project and advance the Abharanam program. On our temple’s 1st anniversary in June 2014, we broke the ground for the construction of the new kitchen, which should be operational by early 2015. With the arrival of the Shilpis from India, Sikhara construction has started, first with the Durga Devi sanctum before continuing with the other sanctums. With God’s grace and help, and barring any last-minute permit issues from the City of Milpitas, we aim to complete major Sikharam construction work in time for our temple’s 2nd anniversary in June 2015. The able and generous support from the devotee community has served as a fillip for the Abharanam program. We have procured and consecrated makutas (crowns) for all of the deities and padas and hastas for most of them. By the time you see this publication, we expect to have consecrated the fourth batch of abharanas, consisting of kavachas and makarathoranm for Rama Satyanarayana Swamy. With the kind of devotee support we have seen so far, I am quite confident that within a very short time we will procure all essential abharanas to adorn our deities for the most divine sight and experience any time we visit the temple. Our Devasthanam continues to be the center for cultural, spiritual, and artistic activities. Temple-sponsored and hosted programs, such as lectures by spiritual leaders, classes in vedic chanting, puja vidhi, classical music and dance programs continue to enjoy good participation and support from the community. As we enter 2015, the executive committee is focused on catering to devotees’ spiritual and religious needs, ensuring welfare of priests and employees, upholding of our values and beliefs, and fiscal transparency. We will work towards incorporating more innovative services and programs that address devotee requirements, serving the community at large, sustain the temple’s operations, and meet its financial obligations. With continued support and contributions from the devotee community, the completion of major aspects of Phase II construction remains one of the primary objectives of this committee. I am very confident that our Devastanam will reach new heights in 2015 with the guidance from our Guruvu Brahmasri Marepalli Naga Venkata Sastry garu, support from our dedicated and talented priests, our volunteers, and the leadership of VEDA committee members and fellow office bearers: Sri Dayakar Duvvuru (Vice President), Sri Sashi Kache (Secretary), Sri Kishore Kichili (Treasurer), Sri Ram Sripathi (Joint Secretary), and Sri Mahadev Kolluru (Joint Treasurer). VEDA temple has become more than a religious place. Under the Vedic Presidence and Chancellery of Guruvugaru Brahmasri. Marepalli Naga Venkata Sastry garu, VEDA has become a Vedic, Devotional and Cultural University. It has been mentioned in Sastras that a Teacher is called a ‘Kulapati’ (Chancellor), if he feeds, provides shelter and teaches at least 10000 students. I feel proud to be part of such blessed students. It is hard to find such a Vedic Sanctum far away from the Veda Bhoomi, Bharata Bhoomi, only due to Lord Satyanarayana Swamy’s Divine grace. Chanakya neethi says:

(You don’t find noble elements in every mountain, except in Meru; not all Elephants have Pearls in their tusks, only Elephants in the Himalayas; not everybody in this world is virtuous, can raise above the desires and get satisfied, very very rare; not all forests have Sandalwood, except those in Malaya Parvatham).

Humbling Experiences from Calendar Preparation श्री गुरुभ्यो नमः । ह�रः ॐ ॥ By offering my humble salutations to Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy and Poojya Guruvulu Brahma Sri Naga Venkata Sastry Garu, I would like to share my experiences in assisting our Poojya Guruvugaru to design and prepare the calendar for the past three years. It is a divine blessing to get an opportunity to work closely with Poojya Guruvugaru in preparing the calendar. We spent several hours working together on the calendar, diligently going through day by day to make sure that every detail included in the calendar is absolutely correct and that every letter and word has important significance and earned its right to be part of the calendar. This was a humbling experience to understand how delicate and complex task it is to identify whether a specific time is auspicious to perform a certain activity. While the Ganānka Sāstram (which involves calculation of the tithi, nakshatra and vara, varjya, durmuhurta and rahukala times) is the heart of the panchangam, the main usefulness of the panchangam lies in being able to interpret these times and current planetary positions to draw key insights and infer which times are auspicious for specific activities, which is referred to as Jyothishya Sāstram. I feel that our Bay Area is blessed to have a great Jyothishya and Veda Pandit like our Poojya Guruvugaru, who, while very busy with various activities on a daily basis, is spending a lot of his valuable time and effort in preparing this calendar and providing a valuable service to the community. It is important to note that this a great service to the people in the entire USA, as the content in this calendar is used in several other calendars in the bay area and other places in USA.
