Page 4-1 Reference 4 WIRING THE SYSTEM TOGETHER TWO OR MORE RECEIVERS Each output on the LNBF can support a single receiver. You cannot connect two receivers to the same output (for example, by using a line splitter), because the two receivers would interfere with each other during channel selection. This is a characteristic of satellite television in general, and is not a limitation of the Bell ExpressVu system. If you want to connect two or more receivers to the same satellite dish and be able to watch different channels through each receiver, you must use a dual-output LNBF. This allows you to connect each receiver to a different output, preventing interference between the receivers. In this case, during installation you must run a separate coaxial cable from each output on the LNBF to each receiver. If you want to purchase an LNBF different from the one that you originally purchased, contact your local Bell ExpressVu Authorized Agent. CABLES AND CONNECTIONS Use either the Phono (RCA) Audio/Video Wiring Setup Diagram on page 4-5 or the TV Set Out (RF or VHF) Wiring Setup Diagram on page 4-6 as the basic plan to wire the system together. If you have more devices, or do not have all of the devices that are shown in the setup, adjust the wiring accordingly. If possible, use the setup shown in the Phono (RCA) Audio/Video Wiring Diagram, as using the setup shown in the TV Set Out (RF or VHF) Wiring Diagram will not support the best quality video on broadcast or cable channels We highly recommend the use of a surge protector device to protect your satellite and television equipment from damage by AC power, cable, telephone, or lightning surges. Tighten the receiver back panel coaxial cable connections only by hand. Using a wrench may over-tighten the connections, causing damage. Such damage is not covered by the Limited Warranty.

TWO OR MORE RECEIVERS

Each output on the LNBF can support a single receiver. You cannot connect tworeceivers to the same output (for example, by using a line splitter), because the tworeceivers would interfere with each other during channel selection. This is acharacteristic of satellite television in general, and is not a limitation of the BellExpressVu system. If you want to connect two or more receivers to the same satellite dish and be able towatch different channels through each receiver, you must use a dual-output LNBF. If you want to purchase an LNBF different from the one that you originally purchased, contact your local Bell ExpressVu Authorized Agent.

CABLES AND CONNECTIONS

Use either the Phono (RCA) Audio/Video Wiring Setup Diagram on page 4-5 or the TVSet Out (RF or VHF) Wiring Setup Diagram on page 4-6 as the basic plan to wire thesystem together. If you have more devices, or do not have all of the devices that areshown in the setup, adjust the wiring accordingly. RF OR VHF CONNECTIONS (GOOD PICTURE AND SOUND)

Cable Connectors onReceiver

The back panel RF or VHF connections (also called the modulator connections) providegood picture and good mono (non-stereo) sound quality. Be aware that even if you havea TV and other devices that support stereo sound, this type of connection will provideonly non-stereo sound.

If you connect a cable TV box or a broadcast TV antenna to the receiver, use the backpanel TV Antenna/Cable In (RF or VHF Connection) for the local programmingsignal input. Use the back panel Phono (RCA) Audio/Video Output connections forthe output if possible, as using the TV Set Out (RF or VHF Connection) will notprovide the best quality video on broadcast or cable channels.

This is the simplest cabling scheme, and many people prefer it because of its ease ofinstallation and use. The RF or VHF connections require that you keep the TV tuned toeither channel 3 or 4 to view satellite channels. You also need to set the back panelChannel 3/4 Switch to match this channel.

Note: If you connect a VCR to the receiver, you must also set both the VCR channelswitch and viewing channel to this same channel. All receivers come preset to channel 3.

Page 4-3

PHONO (RCA) AUDIO/VIDEO CONNECTIONS (BETTER PICTURE AND SOUND)

Cable Connectors onReceiver

The back panel phono (RCA) audio/video connections provide better picture quality andstereo sound. The phono (RCA) audio/video cable is available as a single cable withthree connectors on either end, or as three separate cables. The connectors are colour-coded according to the type of signal they carry: the yellow connector carries the videosignal, the white connector carries the left audio signal, and the red connector carries theright audio signal. If the TV only has one input connection for this type of audio, connect it to the right (R) phono (RCA) audio connection on the receiver.

If you use the phono (RCA) audio/video connections to connect the receiver with otherdevices, then depending on the type of device that you connect to the receiver you mayneed to use the menus displayed by each device to change the input from local broadcastTV to satellite TV. See the user guides that came with the other devices for moreinformation.

CHANNEL 3/4 SWITCH

If you use the TV Set Out (RF or VHF Connection) to wire thereceiver to a television, set this switch to the channel for the signaloutput. Select a channel that is not being used by a cable or localtelevision station. Note: If you connect the receiver to a VCR thatalso uses a channel switch, set both switches to the same channel.

TV ANTENNA/CABLE IN (RF OR VHF)

Connect your broadcast TV antenna or cable TV connection here toswitch between satellite programming and your local or cable TV.When the satellite receiver is turned OFF or you press theTV/Video button on the remote, you have access to your local TV stations from this connection.

TV SET OUT (RF OF VHF)

The receiver sends non-stereo output through this connector. If youconnect the cable or broadcast TV antenna to the receiver, you mustuse this to connect the TV. If you use this connection, you do notneed to use the Phono (RCA) or S-VIDEO connectors. However,we recommend that you use them to support the highest qualitystereo sound and video.

SUPER VHS VIDEO (S-VIDEO) OUTPUT (BEST PICTURE)

The receiver supports S-VIDEO, which supports the highest quality video available. If you use this back panel connection forvideo, you must still connect the audio using the Phono (RCA)Audio Outputs.

TELEPHONE JACK

Connect a telephone line with a standard RJ-11 telephone connectorto the receiver here, and then connect the line to an active telephoneconnection.Note: The receiver must be connected at all times to an active telephone connection. If you install two or more receivers, eachreceiver must be connected at all times to an active telephone connection.

SATELLITE IN

Connect the coaxial cable from the satellite dish to the receiverusing this connection.

Possible Reasons WhyWhen the receiver finds a problem, it displays an ERRORmessage on the TV screen.

You may try to enter the passwordthree times. If you do not enterthe correct password any of thosetimes, then you must wait severalminutes until you may try again.

You or someone else locked thereceiver front panel buttons.

The receiver is not receiving astrong enough signal to maintainan uninterrupted, clean picture.

Smart card is missing or notinserted correctly.

Smart card is inserted upsidedown or backwards.

The receiver will work only withthe Smart Card that came with it.

There is a problem with theProgram Guide informationtransmitted to the receiver via the satellite signal.

The receiver has not yet beenelectronically linked with the Smart Card, via the satellitesignal.

The receiver may have just beenplugged in. If so, it is acquiringthe satellite signal. The satellitedish may have moved so that it isno longer picking up the satellitesignal. The coaxial cables mayhave loosened or have moistureinside. There may be aninterruption of the satellite signal.

What to DoIn most cases, the ERROR message explains theerror. Sometimes, the ERROR message promptsyou to do something. However, usually all youneed to do is select the OK option on theERROR message to clear the message from theTV screen.

Wait until several minutes have passed, and try again.

You must use the remote control to unlock thereceiver front panel buttons.

Check the condition of all the coaxial cables andcable connections in the system. Check thecondition of the dish mounting and aiming. Ifneeded, contact your installer to re-aim the dish.If the system is OK, then there may be aweather-related problem with transmission of thesatellite signal.

USING THE REMOTE CONTROL

What is Happening You cannot find the remotecontrol.

When you press a button onthe remote control, thereceiver does not do whatyou expect.

When you press the remotecontrol Power button to turnthe receiver ON, the receiverfront panel Power light doesnot light up.

You use infrared (IR) remotecontrol extenders (called“pyramids”). Other electronic devicesexhibit ultra-high frequency(UHF) interference.

You use infrared (IR) remotecontrol extenders (called“pyramids”). The IR remotecontrol extenders do notseem to work.

Possible Reasons WhyN/A

The remote control may be missing batteries, the batteriesmay be incorrectly placed in theremote, or the batteries may beweak or dead.

You may not be able to see thatthe receiver Power light is on, ifother lights in the room are toobright. The remote control maynot be operating properly or thebatteries may be weak or dead. The receiver power cord may notbe plugged into a power outlet, or there may be a problem withthe power.

The extenders use UHF signals to transmit signals from one roomof the building to another. These signals may be causing the interference.

The IR sensor on the extenderthat receives the remote controlsignals may not be facing theremote control. The IR cable on the extender thatsends the signal to the receivermay not be right in front of the IRsensor on the receiver front panel.

What to DoUse the receiver front panel Control Buttons tocontrol the receiver until you find the remote. Ifthe remote control is permanently lost or toodamaged to use, call Bell ExpressVu CustomerService Call Centre to order a replacement.

If the batteries are missing or dead, insert freshAAA-size batteries. If the remote has freshbatteries, check whether they are placedaccording to the label diagram. If not, removethem and place correctly.

Try other remote control buttons to see if thereceiver is responding. Replace the remote batteries with fresh ones.

Check that the receiver power cord is notdamaged and that the plug is inserted correctlyinto the outlet.

Temporarily stop using the extenders, to seewhether this eliminates the interference. If theextenders are the source of the interference, youwill have to avoid using them whenever you donot want interference with other devices that useUHF. This is because UHF signals have a longrange and go through walls and other solidobjects.

Make sure that the extender that receives the signal from the remote control is facing the rightway, so that the IR sensor can receive the remotecontrol signals.Make sure that the IR cable on the extender thatsends the signal to the receiver is right in frontof the IR sensor on the receiver front panel, sothat the receiver IR sensor can receive the signals. If doing the above does not solve the problem, contact the manufacturer of the extenders forassistance.
