u-blox modules: the highest quality on the marketOur modules have the highest quality level in the industry. Our qualification process includes stress tests such as temperature cycling, mechanical shock and vibration tests. Most of those tests are done at our laboratory facilities and are performed as stipulated in the ISO 16750 standard: Road vehicles – environmental conditions and testing for electrical and electronic equipment standard.

Extensive software tests with GNSS, GSM, UMTS, LTE & CDMA simulators as well as challenging real-world environments around the world are carried out to make sure that our products perform to the high level of quality we pride ourselves in.

Manufactured in a fully automatic assembly line, every u-blox module undergoes thorough production testing with maximum test coverage. This includes a full detection and processing path, from antenna input to data output. X-ray examination is performed on every module to identify and eliminate units with potentially faulty solder joints.

Designed for automotive grade quality and Zero DefectsWe work exclusively with world-class semiconductor fabri-cation partners that use the most reliable technologies to manufacture our chips. Our collaborative approach creates synergies, leveraging our product know-how and our partners’ manufacturing expertise. This allows us to optimize our design, test and manufacturing processes in line with our Zero Defect strategy.

Our in-house team of highly-specialized Test and Production Engineers develop and verify all chip and module tests in-house before installation at mass-production assembly and testing facilities.

Our chip production process includes 100% wafer sorting, packaging, as well as 100% final testing. Our automotive-grade integrated circuits (ICs) are qualified according to AEC-Q100, the automotive standard that includes the requirements of the common JEDEC standard JESD47 for ICs.

Qualification tests are performed at our laboratory facilities following the Zero Defects flow for automotive grade semiconductors (see diagram on following page).

LEA-M8F u-blox M8 time and frequency reference GNSS module

Page 46 | Timing and raw data modules

Highlights• Reception of GPS, QZSS, GLONASS, BeiDou• Integral low phase-noise 30.72 MHz system reference

oscillator disciplined by GNSS• Accurate measurement and control of external

oscillators• High sensitivity acquisition and single-satellite timing• Automatic hold-over • Prepare for integration with external PTP, Sync-E and

network listen

Product descriptionu-blox time and frequency products provide multi-GNSS synchronisation for cost-sensitive network edge equipment including Small Cell and Femto wireless base-stations. The LEA-M8F module is a fully self-contained phase and fre-quency reference based on GNSS, but can also be used as part of a complete timing sub-system including macro-sniff Synchronous Ethernet and packet timing.

The LEA-M8F module includes a low-noise 30.72MHz VCTCXO meeting the master reference requirements for LTE Small Cells and providing 100 ppb autonomous hold-over. An external TCXO or OCXO can also be measured and controlled for TD-LTE, LTE-Advanced and other applications requiring extended hold-over. External sources of synchronization are supported through time-pulse and frequency inputs and a message interface. This allows measurements from macro-sniff, Sync-E or packet timing to be combined with measurements from GNSS.

u-blox time and frequency products include timing integ-rity alarms that report phase and frequency uncertainty both during normal operation and hold-over. They feature a high dynamic range radio with both analog and digital interference mitigation supporting their inclusion as an integral part of a local area base station design.

Example application (Small Cell)In a wireless Small Cell application, the LEA-M8F can distribute a disciplined low-phase noise 30.72MHz reference signal directly to the RF transceivers. GNSS synchronisation is combined with network sources by an exchange of synchronisation signals, status and control messages with the base-band processor. Source selection and hold-over may be controlled by either the LEA-M8F or base-band application.

LEA-6T/NEO-6T u-blox 6 timing GPS modules

Highlights• Precision Timing: o 1 or 2 timepulse outputs (up to 10 MHz) o Single-satellite operation o Stationary (survey-in) mode for enhanced timing

accuracy o Time mark of external event inputs

• Raw pseudo-range data output

• UART, USB and DDC (I2C compliant) interfaces

• Onboard RTC Crystal for faster warm and hot startsProduct descriptionThe LEA-6T/NEO-6T modules provide precision GPS timing for demanding synchronization applications such as bases-tations. This module features user configurable frequency and timepulse outputs. An accuracy of up to 15 ns is achievable by using the quantization error information to compensate the granularity of the time pulse. LEA-6T/NEO-6T feature a time mode function whereby the GPS receiver assumes a stationary 3D position, whether programmed manually or determined by an initial self-survey.

During stationary operation GPS timing is possible with only one visible satellite. This means that time can be maintained even under adverse signal conditions or in environments with poor sky visibility. A built-in time mark and counter unit provide precise time measurement of external event inputs. T-RAIM (Timing Receiver Auton-omous Integrity Monitoring) is available to detect faulty GPS measurements. LEA-6T/NEO-6T deliver raw pseu-do-range data for survey and specialist applications.

LEA-6T/NEO-6T modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each module is tested and inspected during production. Qualification tests are performed as stipulated in the ISO16750 standard: “Road vehicles – Environmental conditions and testing for electrical and electronic equipment”.

Product selector

Product descriptionThe LEA-6R provides 100 % coverage, combining the high performance u-blox 6 positioning engine with u-blox’ ADR Dead Reckoning technology. ADR supple-ments GPS satellite position information with heading and distance data provided by additional sensors. When GPS satellites are out of sight, location is extrapolated using distance and angle information from the gyro-scope and speedpulse sensors. The speedpulse sensor signal can be received either as a digital tick signal or as messages via the serial interface. The gyroscope is monitored via an external ADC over the SPI interface.

ADR enables accurate navigation even in locations with poor or absent GPS signals such as tunnels, indoor parking facilities and deep urban canyons. In addition, ADR effectively eliminates the impact of multipath effects in urban canyon environments. This makes the LEA-6R the ideal solution for applications requiring accurate, reliable positioning, all of the time.

LEA-6R modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each module is tested and inspected during production. Qualification tests are performed as stipulated in the ISO16750 standard: “Road vehicles – Environmental conditions and testing for electrical and electronic equipment”.

NEO-6V u-blox 6 Dead Reckoning GPS module

Highlights• Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) technology:

o 100% coverage, continuous positioning even in tunnels

o Highly accurate and reliable navigation performance

o Automatic sensor calibration

• ROM-based for cost effectiveness

• Uses vehicle’s onboard sensors

• UART, USB, DDC (I2C compliant) and SPI interfaces

• Onboard RTC crystal for faster warm and hot starts

Product descriptionAutomotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) is u-blox’ industry proven off-the-shelf Dead Reckoning solution for tier-one automotive customers. u-blox’ ADR solution combines GPS and sensor digital data using a tightly coupled Kal-man filter. This improves position accuracy during periods of no or degraded GPS signal.

The NEO-6V provides ADR functionality over its software sensor interface. A variety of sensors (such as wheel ticks and gyroscope) are supported, with the sen-sor data received via UBX messages from the application processor. This allows for easy integration and a simple hardware interface, lowering costs. By using digital sensor data available on the vehicle bus, hardware costs are minimized since no extra sensors are required for Dead Reckoning functionality. ADR is designed for simple integration and easy configuration of different sensor options (e.g. with or without gyroscope) and vehicle variants, and is completely self-calibrating.

All NEO-6 modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each module is tested and inspected during production. Qualification tests are performed as stipulated in the ISO16750 standard: “Road vehicles – Environmental conditions and testing for electrical and electronic equipment”.

NEO-7P u-blox 7 precise point positioning GNSS module

Highlights• High precision GNSS < 1 m

• DGPS by SBAS or RTCM

• Combines low power consumption and high sensitivity

• Simple integration with u-blox wireless modules

• Backward compatible with NEO-6 and NEO-5 families

• Raw measurement data (GPS)

Product descriptionThe NEO-7P module combines the high performance of the u-blox 7 multi-GNSS engine with precise point posi-tioning (PPP) technology for GPS. u-blox’ industry-prov-en PPP algorithm, in combination with SBAS, provides exceptional precision in clear-sky applications without the need for a reference station. This makes NEO-7P the ideal solution for many applications in surveying, marine navigation, agriculture, sports and leisure.

For world-wide application, the NEO-7P supports Differential GPS (DGPS) operation as an alternative to SBAS and PPP, using RTCM correction messages from a local reference station or aiding network. Ionospher-ic corrections received from regional SBAS satellites (WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS) enable the highest stand-alone positioning accuracy from the PPP algorithm. u-blox’ PPP also provides useful improvements in stand-alone precision even without SBAS. PPP delivers its full ben-efits after the first few minutes of operation with an unobstructed sky view.

• Altitude discrimination thanks to 3D sensor support

• Automatic sensor calibration; configurable lever arm correction

• Pin compatible with UBX-M8030-Kx

• Up to 20 Hz position update rate

• Manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified production sites

• Available in standard and automotive grade

Product descriptionUBX-M8030-Kx-DR is u-blox’ industry-proven off-the-shelf Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) solution. u-blox ADR combines concurrent GNSS and sensor digital data using a tightly coupled Kalman filter. This improves position accuracy during periods of unavail-able or degraded GNSS signals.

ADR supports a variety of sensor combinations, such as wheel ticks, single axis / 3-axis gyroscope, and 3D accel-erometer. The 3D sensor support improves performance during altitude changes without a GNSS signal, such as in tunnels, fly-overs, or underground parking.

ADR receives the sensor data via UBX messages from the application processor. Digital sensor data is available on the vehicle bus. This reduces hardware costs since no extra sensors are required for dead reckoning

functionality. ADR is designed for simple integration and easy configuration of different sensor options (e.g. DR with or without gyroscope) and vehicle variants, and is completely self-calibrating.

The flash-based u-blox 3D-ADR features are available on UBX-M8030-KA-DR and UBX-M8030-KT-DR chips which are pin compatible with standard UBX-M8030 chips.

The UBX-M8030-Kx chips are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each chip is tested and inspected during production. The chips are qualified according to ISO 16750 - Environmental conditions and electrical testing for electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles.

Services overview

Users expect instant position information. During coldstart conditions, this is sometimes not possible because at least four satellites must be identified, and their complete orbital position data, called Ephemeris, received. Due to the low data rate of satellite signals (only 50 baud!) together with adverse geographical or city conditions, downloads from satellites can be unacceptably long, or even fail altogether.

u-blox’ AssistNow online service delivers global satellite position data 24/7

AssistNow™ global online service for accelerated positioning

Assisted GNSS (A-GNSS) accelerates calculation of po-sition by instantly delivering the necessary satellite data such as Ephemeris, Almanac, accurate time and satellite status to GNSS receivers via wireless networks such as GSM/GPRS or the Internet. The aiding data enables a GNSS receiver to compute a position within seconds, even under poor satellite signal conditions.

Based on information gathered from its global networkof satellite tracking stations, u-blox offers AssistNowservice to its customers worldwide via the Internetbased on a highly reliable online AssistNow Server. Both Online and Offline option are available.

u-blox also supports a new feature, AssistNowAutonomous. Available on all u-blox 6/7/M8 GNSS receivers, this feature adds embedded satellite orbit prediction capability for even faster positioning withoutrelying on any external aiding data.

Read about u-blox’ AssistNow service on page 70.

CellLocate®: hybrid solution for indoor positioning

u-blox’ proprietary cellular/GNSS positioning service merges mobile phone cell information with GNSS to improve positioning in areas where satellite signals are weak, jammed, or completely blocked.

CellLocate combines mobile cell and/or GNSS position-ing data to deliver better results than either technology can accomplish alone:

• Positioning performance can be improved and extended to areas where satellite signals are 100% blocked, especially within buildings

• Eliminate “no-fix” scenarios by providing at least an approximate fix wherever cell phone coverage is available

• Overcome jamming scenarios to improve antitheft system performance

u-blox‘ CellLocate cellular positioning technology is a feature implemented in u-blox SARA, LEON and LISA GSM and UMTS wireless modem families.

The challenge of stand-alone GNSSGNSS users expect instant position information. With standard positioning this is often not possible because at least four satellites must be identified, and their complete orbital position data (called Ephemeris) received. Under adverse signal conditions, data downloads from the satellites to the receiver can take minutes, hours or even fail altogether. Assisted GNSS (A-GNSS) accelerates calculation of position by delivering satellite data such as Ephemeris, Almanac, accurate time and satellite status to the GNSS receiver via wireless networks or the Internet. This aiding data enables a GNSS receiver to compute a position within seconds, even under poor signal conditions.

AssistNow A-GNSSAssistNow Online and AssistNow Offline are u-blox’ end-to-end A-GNSS services for OEM customers and their end users. These services boost GNSS acquisition performance for devices with or without network connectivity. AssistNow Online and AssistNow Offline can either be used alone or in combination.

AssistNow A-GNSS services require no additional hardware and generate virtually no CPU load. The system is very easy to implement and can be installed and operational within a day.

u-blox wireless modules feature an embedded AssistNow client making integration simple.

Assisted GNSS u-blox A-GNSS services

AssistNow OnlineWith AssistNow Online, an internet-connected GNSS device downloads assistance data from u-blox’ AssistNow Online Service at system start-up. The service works on all standard mobile communication networks that support Internet access, including GPRS, UMTS and Wireless LAN. No special arrangements with mobile network operators are needed to enable AssistNow Online, making this solution network operator independent and globally available. u-blox only sends ephemeris data for those satellites currently visible to the mobile device requesting the data, thus minimizing the amount of data transferred.

AssistNow OfflineWith AssistNow Offline, users download u-blox’ Differential Almanac Correction Data from the Internet at their convenience. The correction data is then transferred to the mobile terminal via TCP/IP, serial port, memory card, etc, and can either be stored in the GNSS receiver’s memory or in the memory of the application processor. Therefore, the service requires no connectivity at system start-up and enables a position fix within seconds, even when no network is available.

u-blox provides correction data valid from 1 to 35 days. The size of these files increases with the length of theprediction period, from as little as 3 kB to 90 kB. Positioning accuracy decreases with the length of thecorrection data duration, with 1–3 day data providing relatively high accuracy and 10–35 day data progres-sively less accuracy. Regular updates help to ensure a high level of position accuracy.

CellLocate® Objective Specification

Mobile network-based hybrid positioning

Increased reliability and indoor positioning based on mobile network informationAlthough it is a widespread and very effective technology, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning is not always possible, particularly in challenging signal environments such as urban canyons, indoors, in enclosed park houses, or when GNSS jamming signals are present. Performance can be improved by complementing the GNSS receiver data with information from mobile network cells that can benefit numerous applications. u-blox, through its in-house development of wireless data modules and GNSS receivers, has developed and embedded a cellular positioning technology, CellLocate, into its SARA and LEON families of GSM/GPRS and LISA family of UMTS wireless modules. This technology enables stand-alone location estimation based on surrounding mobile network information in conjunction with GNSS positioning data to improve positioning.

For any given location with wireless network coverage (GSM/GPRS and/or UMTS), a specific combination of wireless cells will be visible. The proprietary CellLocate feature allows u-blox GSM/GPRS and UMTS wireless modules to report to the CellLocate server those cells which are visibile at any specific location. This enables the server to estimate a coarse position on the basis of previous observations from other modules reporting the same cell visibility pattern, and this position is reported back to the module. The estimated position is then output by the module to the host processor via its serial port.

CellLocate database contains historic observations of cell A reported by several devices

CellLocate server defines area of cell visibility

New device observes cell A, position is estimated from the previous observations

Visibility of multiple cells provides even better coverage and accuracy

Cellular locationWireless cells are widely available in urban and rural environments enabling the CellLocate service to provide a position estimate virtually everywhere and under any conditions.

The service is offered free of charge on a best effort basis and the performance depends on the density of network cells and database population. A self learning mechanism is implemented allowing continuous database improvement and update in order to increase performance over time and prevent database aging.

CellLocate and hybrid positioningCellLocate and hybrid positioning are u-blox’ end-to-end services for OEM customers and their end-users. These services enhance and complement stand-alone GNSS acquisition performance when u-blox wireless modules and GNSS modules or chips are used.

u-blox implementation provides a single AT command interface enabling full control of the GNSS receiver and cellular positioning functionality in order to maximize performance and virtually eliminate any “no position scenario”. Through the single AT command interface it is possible to define all the positioning settings (cellular, stand-alone GNSS, GNSS aiding data) and enable the wireless module to optimize positioning performance.

CellLocate and hybrid services are fully integrated into u-blox wireless modules and work in parallel to normal module functionality. While stand-alone CellLocate is able to estimate position even when the GNSS signal is completely absent, hybrid positioning technology provides even better performance by using a combination of complementary positioning methods.

Benefits of CellLocate and hybrid positioning

• Position available even in areas of poor or no GNSS signal reception

• Network operator independent

• Easy to integrate into end applications

• No additional hardware required

• Free best-effort service

• Supported by all u-blox GSM/GPRS and UMTS/HSPA modules

u-blox’ module roadmap philosophyForm factor and layout consistency

When it comes to modules, u-blox adheres to a core design philosophy: maintain form factor and software continuity to allow customers to easily upgrade their products with each new generation of u-blox position-ing or wireless modules.

The key benefit is simple: customers do not need to keep changing their PCB designs whenever u-blox introduces an improved version of its module products. Simply drop in the next generation module on the existing PCB and start testing! As a leading global supplier of Wireless and GNSS modules, u-blox has established these compact module form factors as de-facto industry standards:

1) Leadless Chip Carrier 2) GPS, GLONASS, QZSS; Galileo and BeiDou ready 3) Land Grid Array

These form factors establish the base of our positioning and wireless module families, a philosophy that has been consistently applied over previous generations. In addition to providing a smooth upgrade path for your designs, form factor consistency allows for easy

interchanging of module family members to adapt to end-product variants targeted at specific regions or feature-sets. This applies especially to u-blox’ wireless 2G/3G/4G module products.

Nested design | Page 85

Wireless module layout compatibilityUpgrade smoothly with nested GSM/UMTS/CDMA/LTE designs

This is why u-blox has maintained form-factor compat-ibility throughout its GSM/GPRS (SARA/LEON), UMTS/HSPA/CDMA2000 (LISA), and LTE (TOBY) wireless module families.

To facilitate nested designs, u-blox provides application notes and PCB reference designs with schematics, Gerber files and bill of materials for 1.8 V and 3.0 V systems.

Example of 2G/3G/4G layout compatibility:nested design accommodates SARA GSM, LISA UMTS/CDMA and TOBY LTE modules on the same footprint

When designing wireless modem products that must accommodate GSM, UMTS, CDMA, or LTE variants as well as region-specific versions requiring different frequency bands, PCB layout issues can generate a long list of expensive design and logistic problems.

The best way to avoid this issue is simple: layout com-patibility across the entire range of wireless modems. With this solution, a single PCB layout can be designed for use by all end-product variations.

4G(LtE) subscriber growth

Digital mobile communication was born in the 1990’s as an offshoot of the fixed wired telephony industry in the form of 2G GSM, which initially offered voice as the primary service. Later on, data was added as a lower priority “add-on” feature, first as SMS for text messaging and then as packetized data through GPRS and then HSPA.

Two cellular network generations later, data has taken over as the driver of mobile network technology. Voice, now a commodity, has been replaced by latency-sensi-tive multimedia and video-rich applications and services as the main revenue generator. This is why operators are rapidly rolling out 4G LTE, making it the fastest growing telecommunications standard in history.

LTE M2M applications

Ultimately, LTE connected devices will exceed human mobile phone users: the number of LTE connected M2M devices is forecast to exceed all other types of connected devices by 2020. Although typical data rates for M2M communication today are much lower than the data rates for which LTE is designed, specific M2M applications will be either created or enhanced to take advantage of the available bandwidth. New LTE-based M2M applications include:

• Wireless router for in-car infotainment systems

• Telehealth terminals providing remote diagnosis and healthcare

• Multimedia signage and advertisement displays

• Remote wireless surveillance cameras

• Vending machine monitoring with video commercial display

• Retail terminals displaying product demonstrations or live helpdesk

• Facial recognition systems used in homeland security

• Unmanned video drones used for surveying, utilities inspection, security, traffic, accident, crowd control and fire monitoring

Software defined modem (SDM)

u-blox is addressing this rapidly expanding market for LTE connectivity through in-house 4G modem chip technology. Based on “Software Defined Modem” (SDM) design methodology, u-blox’ strategy is to design and test advanced modem products with specific M2M functionality in software. The SDM

eCall / ERA-GLONASS | Page 87

eCall / ERA-GLONASS

eCall and ERA-GLONASS are a European, respectively Russian initiative to combine mobile communications and satellite positioning to provide rapid assistance to motorists in the event of a collision. The systems, the first based on GPS and Galileo the latter on GLONASS, monitor in-vehicle sensors for such events as airbag deployment to automatically transmit location details and summon assistance via emergency cellular service. The motivation for both systems is the reduction of the consequences of road accidents in Europe and Russia.

When activated, the in-vehicle systems automatically initiate an emergency call carrying both voice and data (including location data) directly to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point to determine whether rescue services should be dispatched to the known position.

The core functionality of both systems is an embedded computer that continuously monitors crash sensors and satellite positioning receiver in order to initiate an automated data and full duplex voice call via a dedicated wireless modem (e.g. GSM, UMTS) in case of an emergency condition. In-band modem capability, the ability to transmit data over the voice channel, is a key requirement for both systems.

Automated emergency response systems

The u-blox IVS eCall system

u-blox’ eCall solutionu-blox has developed both GNSS and GSM components supporting all aspects of “In-vehicle eCall Terminals”, or IVF. Based on the company’s SARA-G3 and LISA-U2 cellular modules and u-blox 8M GNSS receivers, the company supports critical design considerations re-quired by IVF designs:

• eCall system know-how• Automotive qualified components• In-band modem support• eCall test environment• eCall application note• High level of component integration• High GNSS receiver sensitivity• A-GPS support• Dead Reckoning capability• FOTA• Track record as automotive vendor• Operator modem certification• Support for special automotive requirements

Multi-GNSS support

Page 88 | Multi-GNSS

u-blox’ comprehensive approach to multi-standard positioning

GPS has been the global defacto standard for naviga-tion and positioning for decades. This situation is rapidly changing. To reduce the reliance on the US-based GPS satellite network, Russia, China, Japan and the EU are deploying their own Global Navigation Satellite Systems (“GNSS”).

The reasons are clear: many countries do not want to be reliant on the US controlled GPS system which could in theory be deactivated or degraded. Designers of GNSS systems are now faced with new motives for de-signing systems that support multiple GNSS standards:

• Government mandate and legal requirements to support their own GNSS system inside one’s country

• Availability / redundancy: increased reliability by removing the dependence on a single system

• Increased performance in cities where visibility of satellites belonging to any one system may be poor, in which case simply use a different one

• Accuracy: increase in precision achieved by using multiple systems concurrently

To address the expanding number of satellite navigationsystems, u-blox has developed GNSS silicon receiver engines that support all deployed as well as upcoming standards. This includes support for both concurrent multi-GNSS navigation for high performance (u-blox M8),as well as single-GNSS, power-optimized operation (u-blox 7).

The state of GNSS

RussiaThe first additional GNSS system to come online is Russia’s GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System). GLO-NASS became fully operational in 2011

with 24 satellites. GLONASS provides global coverage, with positional accuracy typically less than 7 meters in Russia, and less than 9 meters outside of Russia. One of the first applications is ERA-GLONASS, an automated vehicle emergency response system similar to the EU’s eCall system. Functional today, GLONASS compatibility is supported by all u-blox 7 and M8 based chips and modules.

European UnionThe EU is deploying its own satellite network called Galileo. The final deploy-ment of a total of 30 satellites is planned for around 2019. Based on an advanced

version of CDMA, Galileo will operate over a similar frequency band as GPS. u-blox 7 and M8 receivers are hardware-ready to support Galileo.

ChinaChina is developing their own GNSS system called Bei-

Dou. First satellites are already in orbit, offering navigation and positioning ser-vices in China and Southeast Asia. It will ultimately rely on 35 satellites to provide global positioning capability to within 10

meters. BeiDou is scheduled for completion in 2020. u-blox M8 receivers support the BeiDou standard.

JapanDue to the high-rise nature of many of Japan’s cities,

QZSS (Quasi-Zenith Satellite System) was designed as an augmentation system to aid GPS in urban canyons. The system will consist of 3 satellites which will transmit correctional data to improve

GPS performance to sub-meter accuracy. The first QZSS satellite was launched in Sept. 2010 with the full com-plement of 3 satellites expected to be completed soon. QZSS supports devices operating in Japan, parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. QZSS service is available and supported by all u-blox 7 and M8 based chips and modules.

Other GNSS augmentation systemsAccurate positioning is highly dependent on atmo-spheric conditions, specifically the delay of GNSS signals while traversing the ionosphere. The 3 augmentation systems listed below (systems that aid GNSS) are rou-tinely used by positioning receivers to improve accuracy in specific geographic regions:

• WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System, available in North America)

• EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, available in Europe and Russia),

• MSAS (Multi-functional Satellite Augmentation System, available in Japan)

u-blox 7 and M8 supports all of these civilian SBAS systems.

Automotive Dead Reckoning

GNSS positioning works well when at least four satellites are within a GNSS receiver’s line-of-sight. However, in urban environments where the accuracy of GNSS navigation is crucial, the view to the sky is often obstructed, or high-rise buildings reflect GNSS signals causing severe multipath effects, degrading the quality of GNSS. In tunnels or underground parking garages, GNSS positioning may not work at all.

u-blox’ proprietary Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) solution solves this problem: based on the last known position; vehicle sensors feed information to the u-blox receiver indicating how far and in what direction the vehicle has travelled. Sensor data and GNSS position are both processed, achieving 100% coverage, highly ac-curate and continuous positioning even in GNSS hostile environment (e.g. urban canyons) or in case of GNSS absence (e.g. tunnels and parking garages).

u-blox’ ADR supports a variety of sensor combinations. The classical setup, called “Gyroscope plus Wheel Tick” (GWT), consists of a 1-axis gyroscope providing the heading information and wheel tick providing the speed information. The use of 3-axis gyro and 3D accelerometer noticeably improves accuracy and allows for altitude discrimination. u-blox’ M8 ADR chip and module support 3D Dead Reckoning.

Alternatively, sensor information from left and rightwheels (front or rear) or all wheels are used differen-tially to deduce heading, called “Differential Wheel Tick” (DWT). This results in slightly lower performance compared to GWT, but has the big advantage of savingthe cost of a gyroscope. Additionally, which provides even more accurate results during elevation changes during driving.

Software sensor interface

The industry proven u-blox ADR solution is highly flexi-ble. The application processor can support a vast array of sensors, and must only convert the sensor data into UBX messages and pass them to the GNSS receiver via a standard serial interface (USB, SPI, UART, DDC). This makes the u-blox ADR solution very portable between

Never lose track of where you are

various vehicle platforms and reduces development effort and time-to-market. u-blox ADR is completely self-calibrating, and requires only pre-configuration to the specific vehicle platform.

u-blox’ ADR with software sensor interface is available as a single chip UBX-M8030-Kx-DR or as NEO-6V module. The chips are qualified according to AEC-Q100 and manufactured according ISO/TS-16949 to meet demanding automotive quality requirements. These components are ideal for factory installed navigation and eCall systems since they use sensor data (wheel tick and gyroscope data) taken directly from the CAN bus.

Hardware sensor interface

The standard quality grade LEA-6R module is a dedicated ADR solution (GWT only) for after market installations with no access to the vehicle bus and no application processor for sensor data processing. Sensors are connected directly to the module: gyroscopes via SPI and ADC and the speedpulse information from the tachometer.

Page 90 | GNSS antenna modules

GNSS antenna modulesIntegration made easy

Every GNSS receiver requires an antenna for operation and thus the annual quantities has reached over a bil-lion antennas when including smart phone applications. As many customers do not have the RF/antenna tuning expertise or the sourcing capability, a highly optimized smart antenna module is a good selection. Smart antenna modules provide a fast time-to-market and an economically viable alternative. Usually an integrated antenna solution is also smaller in size than a module with external antenna.

Typical GNSS antenna module customers are consum-ing receivers in the 10k per year quantity. Sourcing an-tennas in these quantities may not be feasible in terms of cost and lead times. Custom tuning is also often needed, especially with patch antennas. u-blox GNSS Antenna Modules are highly optimized for performance including sensitivity and jamming immunity as they incorporate a dual SAW filter solution.

Currently u-blox offers two different kinds of Smart An-tenna Modules: PAM (Patch Antenna Module) and CAM (Chip antenna Module). Both of them are optimized for best antenna performance. The 18 x 18 mm antenna element used in PAM-7Q is a good compromise between size and performance. Smaller elements, like 12 x 12 mm suffer from poor radiation efficiency resulting in low SNR values. Note that adding an LNA does not improve radi-ation efficiency. Note also that patch antenna elements are by nature relatively narrowband and as a result mainly intended for single GNSS operation.

The chip antenna versions offer an interesting alter-native to traditional patch antenna solutions as good performance is combined with extremely compact form factor. Properly designed, a chip antenna module per-forms about equally well as a patch antenna module. The table on the following page shows typical SNR val-ues (in dBHz) that are expected with different antenna sizes and types.

PAM is a highly popular form factor due to installation flexibility. It can be mounted ‘as is’ part of the customer mechanics or soldered with a pin-header to custom-er PCB. The 18 x 18 mm patch antenna of PAM-7Q provides RHCP polarization not achievable with smaller patch antenna elements. The omnidirectional radiation pattern increases flexibility for device installation. The simple design and easy interfacing keeps installation costs to a minimum.

PAM-7Q targets industrial and consumer applications that require small and cost efficient smart antenna solu-tions. PAM-7Q is form factor compatible with UP501 module, allowing the upgrade of existing designs with minimal effort.

The new chip antenna module, CAM-M8Q, is a really interesting alternative when customers require both

small size and multi-GNSS capability. The chip antenna element used in CAM-M8Q can handle all L1 frequen-cies ranging from Beidou (1560 MHz) up-to Glonass (1606 MHz). Traditional patch antenna solutions cannot achieve the same bandwidth. CAM-M8Q is also extremely low in height making thin customer designs possible. The chip antenna modules require however care in design implementation as the customer PCB forms part of the overall antenna (half of the dipole). CAM-M8Q has a feature whereby the internal chip antenna can be used as a backup antenna if the cus-tomer chooses to use an external antenna. This is useful in customer applications where there is a risk that the primary antenna is made malfunctional on purpose.

CAM-M8Q is targeted for all applications requiring good Multi-GNSS performance in a compact form factor.

This demonstrates consistent antenna gain in the sky-facing direction, independent of device orientation. Measurements are based on the module mounted on an 80 x 40 mm ground plane, which acts as part of the antenna. Page 92 | Precise Point Positioning

Precise Point Positioning (PPP)Ultra-precise GNSS positioning

Many industrial and leisure applications require higher accuracy than traditional GNSS provides, for example mapping, agricultural uses, marine navigation, con-struction, open-sky warehouse management and loca-tion-based recreational applications such as geocaching and handheld golf rangefinders.

In some of these applications, Real Time Kinematic (RTK) or post-processing can be used to achieve accu-racy to millimeters at the cost of time or deployment of a local reference receiver. A much lower-cost solution is based on Precise Point Positioning (PPP), a method that performs precise position determination to within a meter using a single receiver.

u-blox’ PPP technology is made possible by stabilizing measurements of the distance between GNSS satellites and the receiver (pseudo-ranges) using carrier phase tracking. Additional accuracy is achieved from iono-spheric correctional data received from satellite-based augmentation systems, such as WAAS (USA), EGNOS (Europe), MSAS (Japan) and upcoming GAGAN (India).

Unlike other PPP solutions that require a dual-frequency receiver, u-blox’ PPP solution uses a single-frequency GPS receiver resulting in lower costs and power con-sumption.

u-blox has implemented PPP in its NEO-7P GNSS module, which also supports RTCM D-GPS in standard point-positioning mode for survey use. This stand-alone high-precision implementation requires no reference receiver deployment, is delivered as a compact (12.2 x 16.0 x 2.4 mm LCC) product, and integrates easily with u-blox wireless modules to support high-accuracy telematics applications.

The NEO-7P can be evaluated with the EVK-7P kit with Precise Point Positioning.

Precision Timing and Reference Frequency

In addition to positioning and navigation applications, GNSS signals are widely used as low-cost precision time or frequency references used by remote or distributed wireless communication, industrial, financial, and pow-er-distribution equipment.

By capitalizing on atomic clocks onboard positioning satellites, GNSS signals can be used to synchronize equipment to within 15 ns, as well as provide UTC time to an accuracy within 90 ns. For wireless communication standards that utilize Time Division Multiplex (TDM) and for CDMA2000 in applications such as femtocell basestations, a precision time reference is mandatory. For these and other systems, GNSS signals are utilized to provide an accurate reference frequency to within 1 part in 100 billion.

u-blox’ range of precision timing chips and modules are able to fulfill this important reference function for a fraction of the cost, power consumption, maintenance, size and weight of other technologies with comparable performance. These stand-alone products provide ac-curate time pulses wherever GNSS signals are available, as well as precise disciplined frequency references with hold-over.

u-blox’ precision timing products benefit from the com-pany’s extensive applications experience and advanced technologies including:

• Fast satellite acquisition by u-blox’ intelligent multi-GNSS signal capture algorithms

• Location-independent clock synchronization, even when only one satellite is in view

• Weak-signal optimization, interference removal and multi-path mitigation enabling deployment in more difficult environments

• Flexible GNSS-synchronised time-pulse and frequency outputs aligned to GNSS time or UTC

• Low cost Frequency/Time modules and reference designs add:

• Disciplined internal or external master reference oscillators with automatic hold-over

• Time-pulse inputs and message-based APIs for inte-gration with host-based sources of synchronization

The histogram below shows the distribution of PPS time pulse time offsets for a u-blox LEA-6T receiver (light blue) and u-blox LEA-M8F receiver (dark blue).

Each PPS pulse edge from the LEA-M8F is precise-ly aligned with a disciplined reference frequency controlled by GPS. The result is excellent short- and long-term phase stability and the elimination of quanti-sation errors. The graph illustrates the very low standard deviation and maximal error of u-blox timing receivers.
