Before the GamePrior to the game, the only requirement is that the radio systems be adequately charged. The radio is placed in the charger module and will be fully charged within approximately 2.5 hours. Be sure to recharge if the radio indicates one bar or less.

Your RefTalk Radio Communication System comes complete with the following items:

Your RefTalk Radio Communication System is pre-set to secure, encrypted frequencies that minimize static and interference and provide confidential communication. There are two pre-set channels and it is simple to switch between channels. If interference is encountered or if additional security is desired, see the instructions on changing frequency on page 5.

Note: All radio systems must be programmed to the same channel to communicate. There is normally no reason to change channels unless interference is detected.

The first few times you use the radio, it is a good idea to practice using the different earpieces that are supplied to select an earpiece that is comfortable and secure. The picture on page 4 shows the right earpiece assembly and appearance when in the ear. Earpieces are detachable and should be washed after use using a mild soap and water, then rinsed and dried thoroughly.

While at the FieldDuring the field inspection process, test for any local interference by turning on one radio tuned to the channel you intend to use, and simply monitor that channel for a few minutes while conducting the field inspection. If inter-ference is heard, change to the alternate channel (see instructions below).

Key LockThe MENU, , and keys are normally locked to prevent accidentally changing the operating mode and channel settings. In order to change channels (or any other RefTalk settings), these keys must be unlocked.

When the radio is turned on, press and hold the MENU key for three seconds to lock or unlock the keys.

The icon appears on the far right side of the display when the keys are locked. No icon appears when they are unlocked.

Channel SelectionOnce the MENU, , and keys are unlocked, simply press the or key to toggle between channel one or two. Make the same changes to the other RefTalk radios. Lock the MENU, , and keys as instructed above.

If interference is encountered on both channels, change the frequency and/or Quiet Talk setting (p. 5) and clone the new setting to the other radios (p.6)

Preparing the Wiring HarnessThere are four leads on the wiring harness. One has a two-prong connector that plugs into the radio; the second is the microphone which clips or is pinned to the uniform shirt; the third is the Push-to-Talk button; and the fourth has a round connector which clips to the clear coil earpiece extension.

The wiring harness is prepared for use by the following three steps:

1. Connect the clear coil earpiece extension to the lead from the wiring harness by squeezing the two disks together (see figure at left).

2. Install your selected earpiece to the pin at the end of the clear coil earpiece extension (see figure at right).

3. Plug the two-prong connector into the right side of the radio (it will only fit in one way --see figure at left).

Wearing the RefTalk SystemThe RefTalk System is designed to be simple to wear and inconspicuous in use. To ensure quick and easy installation, it is best to practice with the system prior to the game day.

To wear the system, use the following steps:

1. Dress in your uniform with the exception of your uniform shirt. The system is most comfortable to wear if you use an undershirt beneath your uniform shirt—if so, put the undershirt on first.

2. Slide your arm (either left or right) into the elastic sleeve, with the open end of the elastic sleeve pocket facing up. Pull the elastic sleeve up to shoulder level (a second referee might assist with this).

3. Slip the radio into the sleeve pocket (the top portion of the sleeve can be folded over the radio antenna to hold it securely in place).

4. Route the wiring assembly under the armpit or over the back.

5. Attach the microphone to the undershirt near the open “V” of the shirt collar. The microphone is highly sensitive and can be placed underneath the shirt (so it is invisible in use).

6. Attach the earpiece near the microphone or behind your head on the undershirt collar. Place the clear coil earpiece extension behind and over the ear, with the earpiece installed comfortably in your ear. Adjust the earpiece clip lead in a location that will allow you to turn your head easily.

7. Clip the Push-to-Talk button to a convenient position on the waistband of your uniform shorts. For Assistant Referees it is best to clip in front and in the middle of the uniform shorts.

8. Turn on the radio and adjust the volume, testing with the other radios of your referee team, until all team members have confirmed operation and adjusted volume to a desired level.

9. Put on your uniform shirt, inserting the arm wearing the radio sleeve into the sleeve of the uniform shirt while allowing the wiring harness to remain inside the shirt. Tuck in your uniform shirt and the entire radio system should be secure and inconspicuous.

After the GameAfter the game, remove the RefTalk Communication System, turn off the radio and detach the earpiece from the clear coil earpiece extension and place in a protective plastic bag. Before next use, wash the earpiece in a mild soap and water, and rinse and dry thoroughly.

Changing the Radio FrequencyIf you need to reprogram RefTalk to an entirely different frequency, follow these steps to select the new frequency, then follow the directions on page 6 under “Cloning” to copy the new settings to the other RefTalk radios.

1. Make sure the radio keys are unlocked (see page 3).

2. Starting with the RefTalk power OFF, press and hold the MENU key (for approx. 1 second) while turning the RefTalk ON.

3. Press the and keys to select either channel 1 or 2 to be changed.

4. Press the MENU key once and then press and to select any frequency listed from 01 through 16.

5. Press the MENU key again to confirm the selection.

6. Press the MON or CAL key to exit Setting Mode.

Changing the Quiet Talk SettingQuiet Talk (QT) is a feature that rejects signals from other parties that are using the same frequency. You will hear audio only when the radio receives a signal that contains a matching code. There are 122 different codes, numbered Qt-01 to Qt-39 and d-01 to d-83. You can select a different QT for each of the two channels.

To change the QT code, first make sure that keys are unlocked (p.3), then:

1. Press the MENU key once. The current QT code will display.

2. Select a different code using the and arrow keys.

3. Press either the MON or CAL key to confirm the setting and return.

Cloning Multiple RefTalk Radios RefTalk supports a simple and easy means for ensuring that all radios in a set are programmed to the same settings. This is called “cloning”, and is accomplished by first setting one radio to the desired new setting (see “Changing Frequency” and “Changing Quiet Talk Setting” on page 5) and then copying (cloning) that setting to all other RefTalk radios in use.

1. First select one RefTalk radio (e.g., the Referee) and make that RefTalkthe “Master”. The Master RefTalk will be set up first, and then will download that configuration to the other RefTalk radios in use.

2. To clone, all RefTalk radios must be turned on in Programming Mode. Up to 5 RefTalk radios can be cloned from one Master.

3. Starting with all RefTalk radios turned OFF (including the Master), turn on each radio one-by-one while simultaneously depressing and holding the Push-to-Talk button and the MON key when you turn on the power switch. Keep the two keys depressed until the LCD display switches from CLon to FQ-1.

4. Repeat for each RefTalk radio, including the Master RefTalk radio.

5. With all RefTalk radio displays reading Fq- 1, on the MASTER RefTalkradio, press ONCE and RELEASE the Push-to-Talk button (if the wiring harness is not connected, use the large black button on the left side of the radio).

6. The Master RefTalk LCD Display will begin changing, one letter at a time to C L o n while the other RefTalk radios will change, one letter at a time, to P r o g.

7. If the cloning is successful the slaves will turn off once P r o g is achieved and then restart, matching the Master RefTalk LCD Display.

8. If any of the RefTalk radios display e r r, repeat items 3 thru 7 for the failed RefTalk radio(s) until cloning is complete for all radios.

9. Lock the new settings by pressing the MENU key for three seconds until the symbol appears. Test to ensure interoperability of all radios.
