LS Cables & System Vietnam Subsidiary Wins Myanmar Contract Korea-based LS Cable & System

(LS C&S) says that its Vietnamese subsid-

iary, LS-VINA, has won a con-tract from Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power for transmission lines worth some US$13 million. This is the largest contract LS C&S has so far received from Myan-mar and accounts for half of the annual power cable purchase of Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power. This contract is expected to establish a bridgehead for LS C&S’s advance into the power market of Myanmar. LS C&S fiercely competed with Chinese, Indonesian and Myan-mar cable makers in this bid-ding, but could become the sole contractor as the company was highly rated in technology as well as in price competitiveness, which was secured through the Vietnamese subsidiary. LS C&S said that Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power used to split its orders among three to four cable manufacturers.“This contract is very meaning-ful in that we can preempt the Myanmar cable market, which is expected to grow quickly,” said Seon-Kook Kim, President of the Production Group of LS C&S.”

BASEC Issues Warning on 6491B Low-Smoke Conduit Wire The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has issued an in-dustry-wide warning to cable buyers to check the harmonized codes on 6491B single-core conduit wire, to ensure it is fit for purpose and conforms to the require-ments of the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671. BASEC is aware of instances in the market where two different cables are both being marketed as ‘6491B’, when they are very different. The two types are H07Z-types according to BS EN 50525-3-41 and H07Z1 types ac-cording to BS EN 50525-3-31. If these cables are confused and the wrong cable is installed, it could lead to seri-ous faults. This warning also extends to distributors and wholesalers to make sure that these cables are marketed correctly, and clearly show their harmo-nized codes.Though both cable types are low-smoke halogen free, there are two fundamental differences between the cables. H07Z has cross-linked insulation and a rated operating temperature of 90°C. H07Z1 has thermoplastic insulation (not cross-

linked), and has a lower rated operating temperature of 70°C.Dr. Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive at BASEC explains, “Only the H07Z cable type to BS EN 50525-3-41 may be described by the UK cable code 6491B, as set out in the UK annex to the BS EN specification. Although these two cables have similar harmonized codes they have different performance characteristics.”These types of cable are commonly used in commercial and industrial prem-ises where fire, smoke or fumes may be hazardous as well as in closed systems, on light fittings, and inside appliances, switchgear and control gear particularly where low emissions of smoke and acid gas is required in case of burning.

Hradil’s Flexible Cable for Low-Temperature UseHradil Spezialkabel, of Germany, an expert in special cables, has de-veloped a low-temperature (down to -40°C) resistant and reeling CAN bus line with a small outside diameter. The cable has been designed for minimal bending radius and high data through-put. This makes it ideal for high-bay deep-freeze facilities, i.e., for control-ling stacker cranes with integrated video cameras. The CAN bus line permits the noise-free transmission of image data and control signals to the goods logistics department static-free, even at low temperatures and under mechanical stress. This means that status data on the location of goods and sequences can be transmitted to the warehouse management system via image pro-cessing. Automated processes enable the stacker crane to respond to the

status and position the goods. Hans Haller, Hradil’s Press Officer, explained, “We have designed the CAN bus cable to be reeling as well as suitable for industrial applications under difficult conditions. This opens up completely new areas of application for CAN bus systems, even at tempera-tures below freezing.”Hradil’s CAN bus line is distinguished by four features: reduced outside diam-eter, extreme resistance to cold, drum reeling and characteristic impedance of 120 ohms. The cable also has further control wires.

able Electricity Infrastructure”, held in Brussels. After 40 months of intense work, the Commission-funded project

concluded that close to zero emission by

2050 means €100 billion to €400 billion investment in electricity transmission.

“Looking into Europe’s future grid, partial undergrounding and submarine cables complementing overhead lines in sensitive areas will play a vital role in grid deployment to enhance public acceptance of power transmission lines. We hope that all stakeholders understand this message in Europe” stated Gil.

The e-Highway2050 clearly identi-fied that Europe needs to expand its electricity transmission grids by 2050 to match the increase in electricity generation, notably wind and solar.
