UNIFORM POLICY

[ SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY]

2014-2015 School Year

The VVínton Woods City Schools Board of Education believes that a neat and orderly appearance is a positive factor for school safety and success, ln keeping with timt belief, the following approved uniform policy shall be adhered to by all students in Wnton Woods City Schools. The expectation is that students will dress ln a manner that reflects positively on the student, school, and district at all school-related activities .

4t) PERMITTED ATTIRE K-12

, Solid white, navy or hunter green polo style collared shirts (long or short sleeve), turtlenecks--mock or regular style. Tops are to be tucked into bottoms - no exposed midriffs, low cut shirts or oversized shirts.

, Solid white, navy blue or hunter green vests, sweatshirts, sweaters. When wearing an approved vest, sweatshirt, or sweater, an approved, polo style collared shirt or turtleneck. mock or regular style, must be worn underneath. Students may wear solid white, navy blue, or hunter green long sleeve shirt under any short sleeve polo style shirt.

, Navy blue or khaki traditional or classic fit pants, (flat front or pleated) shorts, skirts, skorts, Capri pants, or Jumpers (no logos). Bottoms must be sized for the waist and be secure at the natural waist. Pants must not drag on the fioor. All skirts, skorts, shorts, and Jumpers must be longer than mid-thigh.

CONSEQUENCES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE: Students who, ln the judgment of the administration or any staff member, are dressed Inappropriately for scnool will be sent to the office along with parental notification. The final interpretation of all uniform policies will be made by the school administrator. Principals shall have the discretion to permit attire that is especially dressy for special Identified events (e.q., presentations, visits to other schools, entertaining visitors, etc.)

UNIFORM ASSISTANCE: Students receiving cash assistance under the Ohio Works First Program or Aid to Dependent Children (ADCU/ADC/ADCR) are eligible for uniform assistance. (See Policy 6152.01) Revised: July 28, 2014

General Guidelines: Home

• All clothing is to be clean, in good repair and properly fitted. • Clothing must be worn in a manner that does not expose the shoulder, torso, midriff, chest, cleavage, back,

buttocks or undergarments • No head wear such as hats, bandanas, head coverings, etc. • No denim or see through materials • Coats or jackets may not be worn or carried during the school day • The building administrator may allow modifications to the dress code on specific days (e.g. spirit days, holidays,

or other school wide events) • No cut-off clothing • No hoodies to be worn in the building • No Leggings or Stilettos

• Solid Navy, Khaki, or Black with no design - must have belt loops • DockerTM style or dress casual style • Proper length - may not drag on the ground and no frayed bottoms • A belt must be worn and go through the loops • Belts must not be excessive in length and may not have oversized belt buckles • Pants are to not be form-fitting materials, i.e. Lycra, spandex, dri-weave, etc. • No oversized pockets on the outside of the pants; No cargo pants

Capri/Crop Pants (Girls Only):

• Same requirements as pants except length

Shorts, Skorts, Skirts, Dresses, Jumpers:

• Same requirements as pants except length • Must be no more than 2 inches above the knee • No slits in skirts above the knee

Shirts:

• Blue (light, navy or royal), Yellow, Gold, White, Light Gray • Solid colors only • Multiple polo shirts may not be worn at the same time • Long or short sleeve standard, collared polo (no more than 4 buttons, all but 2 must be buttoned) • Shirts must be tucked in and must be long enough to remain tucked ln • May have a small logo no larger than a student ID card (except for school spirit wear) • T-shirts, thermals, turtlenecks or long sleeve t-shirts (blue, black, white, yellow or gray) are permitted bul must

Sweaters/Sweatshirts:

• Blue, Yellow, Gold, White, Light Gray • Solid colors only • Crew neck style sweatshirts may be worn, but do not require a polo shirt to be worn underneath. • Cardigan or V-neck style sweaters may be worn, but requires an approved style polo shirt to be worn

underneath. • No hoods or zippers • May wear approved PRMS spirit wear sweatshirts/sweaters within the approved guidelines • May have a small logo no larger than a student ID card (except for PRMS spirit wear)

• Athletic shoes are allowed • Hard Soled, Closed toe shoes only • No heels higher than 1" • If shoes have laces they must be laced and tied • No slippers or crocs

Hair:

• Hair color must be a natural color or tone (highlights are okay). Excessive or extreme hair colors or styles is prohibited, and will be at the discretion of the administration.

Piercings/Jewelry:

• Extreme and/or excessive piercings are prohibited. • Spiked or studded jewelry and/or chains are not to be worn or carried. • No visible necklaces, lanyards, or chains hanging below the waist. • No Jewelry that could be dangerous to persons or destructive to school property is permitted. • No decorative dental coverings (I.e. grills).

Uniform Dress Code for Gym

• Athletic wear pants (any color) or shorts - no more than 2" above the knee or 2" below the knee • Crew neck T-shirt with sleeves (any color)

Mt. Healthy City School District Approved School Dress Code

The Mt. Healthy City Schools Board of Education believes that a neat and orderly appearance is a positive factor for school safety and success. In keeping with that belief, the following approved dress code shall be adhered to by all students enrolled in Mt. Healthy City Schools.

PERMITTED ATTIRE:

Shirts: Solid white, black or "Mt. Healthy" red shirts (no light blue shirts allowed). Shirts arc to be 2 or 3 button polo shirts or turtlenecks. Shirts can be long or short sleeved. Shirts must be able to be tucked into bottoms - no exposed midriffs. Logos (or emblems) are permitted on shirts. Logos can be no bigger than the size of one's fist.

Pants: Black, navy or khaki traditional or classic fit pants (flat or pleated front). All bottoms must be secured at the natural waist. Oversized pants arc not permitted, No cargo pants or shorts with multiple pockets. No blue jeans or denim pants. Students may choose to wear shorts, skirts, capri, skorts or jumpers. Length of skirts 3" from knee, lengthof'shorts and skorts 6" from knee.: A belt must be worn inside of the belt loops if bottoms have belt loops for· grades 3-12. Belts are optional for K-2 students, though recommended.

Sweaters/Sweatshirts: Solid white, black or "Mt. Healthy" red sweaters (cardigan or crew neck) and sweatshirts. No hoods on sweaters and/or sweatshirts When wearing sweaters or sweatshirts, an approved solid collared shirt must be worn underneath,

Hi Alannah.

Thanks for your email first of all. I'm always happy to see young people and leaders like yourself access the system to try to make it work better for them and their fellow students. So, to that end, I hope I can supply you with some useful information to assist you in your goal/project.

There are many documents that get reviewed each school year by the school district's leadership - many of them are Board of Education policies (sometimes by law such as the Anti-Bullying Policy & the Wellness Policy) and some are just processes or documents that are important and need frequent review. There are two (2) that fall into that latter category- the Student Code of Conduct (attached) and the Student Uniform Dress Code (below). Both of these are reviewed annually and then reviewed and reapproved by the Board of Education (elected governing officials). Honestly, your timing couldn't be better. These are due to be reviewed any week now and then taken back to the board in May or June for approval. Here are two people you can contact who guide this process. These are people you could email and possibly meet with in order to get plugged into the process in an authentic way.

Who makes the Policy ? The school board of education

makes the decision of wearing the formal uniforms.

At the beginning of the school year the leader of school districts makes the decision.

The ideas from the leader of districts gets sent to the School Board of Education.

The uniform· policy gets reviewed about annually, it gets thought about every year.

Advantages The 1st alternative policy

has the advantage of us expressing ourselves. The spirit wear will make all the students look different because we won't all be wearing the same clothes.

Some students might wear spirit wear tops inappropriately. Which could lead to problems. Some students may get bullied because of kids wearing uniform tops instead of spirit wear tops. Spirit wear ranges from $10-$15. These could be to expensive for parents or students.

Teacher surveys 36 teachers have taken this survey. 40.54% of the teachers said that the spirit wear would increase warrior pride, 59.46°/o said it wouldn't. 52.78% of the teachers said the school would be more of a relax setting academically, 47.22% of the teachers said that it would be the same. 43.24°/o of the teachers said they would support changing the uniform policy, 56.76°/o said they wouldn't.

Conclusion of Teacher Surveys Teacher responses show that the majority of teachers support the current uniform policy. Some teachers that I have talked to personally want the uniform policy to spirit wear everyday. Otherwise the teachers really do not support it.

The Process This policy is constitutional

because you have to go through this amendment through the school board of education. The uniform policy is renewed every year. ·

The leader of the district gives their ideas then it is taken to the School board of Education for responses.

The School Board of Education also uses the Anti- Bullying policy.

Who will individually be influenced

The following people are people we may talk to to support our policy further.

Teachers will be influenced by the strength of the arguments we present.

The parents will support the uniform policy change due to the argument that they might be able to save money because the spirit wear can be less than the uniforms.

Who will be influenced governmental?

Our school's board of education would influenced because they would have to put the new uniform policy in the handbooks. They would have to make new documentation of the new uniform policy.

Who will individually be influenced to be continued

The school board of education will be influenced by the results of students that want spirit wear back.

Another group that would be influenced could be the PTA. We would meet with them and explain to them our action and they could help us reach out to the parents and teachers.

Action Process

Involve the PTA and get their support.Make a petition to take to the school board.

Make a presentation of our outcome to the school board to try get the uniform policy changed.

Proposed Action

If the school board of education does not approve our policy then our next action will be to organize a show of support. We will ask everyone that supports to wear spirit wear to the event. Hopefully this will change their minds if the original process does not work.
