oUr GoaL & GUaranteeour goal is to provide truly exceptional and quality programming, and we won’t be satisfied until you are. if any program of mca of chicago’s construction education insitute® does not fulfill your goal, we will gladly refund your money.
hiStory oF Ceithe nationally-recognized construction education institute® (cei) was founded in 1997 by mca of chicago and the Piping education council (Pec) to provide quality educational offerings for the industry. one major genesis for the founding of cei came from a national study on union contractor productivity. it showed that 1) union contractors were overly reliant on the training of their field workers for the success of their businesses, and 2) that the management and office staff of non-union contractors were often better trained than the office staff of union contractors. cei’s university-quality programs span a wide range of topics from safety to people management to computer technology. the cei faculty is made up of highly qualified educators well-versed in the mechanical contracting and service industry.DriVinG DireCtionS7065 VeteranS BLVD., BUrr riDGe, iL 60527the construction education institute® is conveniently located in burr ridge, iL, close to i-294 and off of i-55. exit i-55 at north county Line road (exit 276b) and turn left on veterans boulevard. continue left on veterans boulevard and follow the signs to building 7065.

bluebeam has a feature named sets that makes Pdf management easy. We will compare several versions of separate drawings, automatically marking older versions “superseded,” and merge markups. document comparisons are created within the set. sets creates its own tags from the document title, creating a report with a listing of all the document versions.
This class will also review the following:• Exporting markups, so a startup template can be created• Quick overview of creating fill in forms• Estimation and takoff• Creation of document Spaces, so all markups can be grouped (i.e. by floor, room, etc.)• Managing markup lists by creating custom calculations, and grouping respective markups together.

the effective management of time is one of a jobsite supervisor’s greatest challenges and is often the root cause of their greatest failures. construction productivity experts have known for many years that journeyman productivity has a direct correlation to a foreman’s effectiveness. a foreman’s effectiveness is also directly correlated to how efficiently and wisely they use their own time. this session will focus on the practical time management methods and techniques a foreman can easily use to increase management efficiency and effectiveness.

mechanical foremen spend a significant portion of each day negotiating with their subordinates, general contractors, construction managers, owners, subcontractors, vendors, and other trades. they regularly negotiate for space, time, access, sequence, hoisting equipment, answers to questions, and the like—all things that have a significant direct impact on project success—yet they often have no formal training in negotiating. Jobsite supervisors who improve their negotiating abilities are more likely to create better results on their projects. to that end, this session will provide jobsite supervisors with basic skills to improve their negotiating abilities and increase their effectiveness and comfort level when negotiating. the session will include, but is not limited to, the following negotiating topics: importance of preparation, negotiating styles, reading the other side, how to concede, strategies for win-win, building relationships, negotiating price, questioning skills, and listening skills.

the saying “change is inevitable” holds true for construction industry in a variety of ways. during the design and construction phases of a project, estimators and Project managers have the responsibility to identify changes in scope and accurately provide cost impacts to the decision makers. this course will examine the different types of changes during the life of a project (design, Preconstruction, construction and closeout). cost impacts of changes increase as the project progresses through its phases. identifying the actual cost of the work and the many variables, such as time, manpower, coordination and access, which affects the final cost are significant to your company. the importance of documentation, accurately informing the decision makers, negotiation options and change order management will also be discussed.

in everyday operations, the estimator and Project manager is extremely busy with their everyday responsibilities, one key responsibility being loss. the responsibility for each of them is to effectively communicate information. it is very common in today’s fast paced world for projects not to be properly turned over from the estimator and a thorough post construction conference not being conducted by the Project manager. in both cases, valuable information is being lost through improper lines of communication. Knowing the true cost of doing business is essential for companies to survive, and that knowledge comes from communications between the estimator and Project manager. this workshop is designed for both estimators and Project managers from each company to attend and work together. We will discuss importance of teamwork, relationship between each role, methods to improve communication and support, pre and post-construction reviews, and allow participants to develop a plan of action for their company.

icecash flow is one of the most important issues facing contractors today. having
survived the downturn, companies are faced with starting new projects, hiring staff, and investing in assets to support the business. more companies go bankrupt due to cash flow issues than due to profitability. many things can and should be done to improve cash management practices. We will explore a range of tools and techniques, from simple to complex, that allow firms to manage and control cash flow. examples include contractual negotiation strategies, pricing and bidding practices, development of cost and resource-loaded schedules that tie to billing activities in the schedule of values, use of 12-week cash flow forecasts, project closeout procedures, and managing the billings and collection cycle. an interactive cash flow simulation provides hands-on experience that enhances the learning outcomes.

If you're 45 and under, take your professional development to the next level in 2019 with a series of small group meet ups called "Learning Labs" that focus on discussing leadership issues. The various Learning Labs in 2019 will focus on different areas of professional development. Similar to a book club, there will be a brief (30 minutes or less) online video or audio attendees could see/listen to before coming to the event which will provide a foundation for the discussion. LinkedIn Learning is an online library of video courses through LinkedIn that are taught by industry experts in technology, creativity and business skills. Generally, courses range from a few minutes to a few hours of instruction.
Participants must have a LinkedIn account to watch the LinkedIn Learning videos. A subscription is $29.99 per month with the first month free. MCA of Chicago will reimburse Learning Lab attendees at each Learning Lab for the cost of one month’s subscription. For questions, please contact Susan Rocque at [email protected].
Topics presented will be relevant to all Emerging Leaders. Each professional development area will have a certain audience that will directly benefit from the issues discussed. Member companies and their CEOs will benefit from continued professional development of their young talent.
MCA of Chicago’s Emerging Leaders Initiative was created to foster long-lasting networks between young industry leaders, partners and vendors, and identify problems and create solutions for issues relevant to the next generation of our industry.
