Winter Farm MarketsThe cold has put an end to outdoor markets, but it’s warm inside. Support local vendors, enjoy fresh, organic produce and get out of the cold. Check out some of the area’s Farmer’s Markets that have expanded their seasonal markets through the long months of win-ter.

Charlevoix:With over 20 vendors, the Charlevoix Winter Farmers Market is in it’s first season, gathering the first Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., expected to run through May 3, 2012.

The market is hosted at the Charlevoix Public Library’s Commu-nity Room, off Clinton Street.

A children’s story hour is hosted at 10:30 a.m. featuring stories about vegetables, healthy eating and farm animals.

Special events include:-Holiday market on December 22 featuring fresh garlands,

wreaths, treats for a Christmas meal, and cooking demonstrations from Charlevoix’s popular eatery, Roquette.

-The February market will bring in the Charlevoix Area Hospital for free health screenings.

-In March, a cooking demonstration will highlight supper bowl snacks.

The market offers unique products and staples; including apples, garlic, greens, organic meat, cheese, fresh bread, mustard, home made pickles, soup, scones, cherry juice, beef jerky, pet treats, hummus, home made butter and even Christmas trees.

For more information call (231)547-2101.

Harbor Springs: Beginning in January the Harbor Springs Farmers Market will have a new home in the Harbor Springs High School cafeteria on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m., scheduled to run through April. The more intimate and personal market will

average around ten vendors.Come in from the cold for farm fresh eggs, locally raised beef,

pork, chicken and turkey, pies, coffee, bread, fresh coffee and hot chocolate, fresh pasta, barbecue sauce and all sorts of made-with-love canned goods.

Beautiful fresh Christmas decorations will also be available. This is the spot to shop for holiday wreaths and swags.

Look for special events to accompany each month’s market.

Boyne City: Boyne City Farmers Winter Markets are Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The market is held in the red pole barn next to the library. The library recently purchased the building for possible future expan-sion. With close to 15 vendors, the market features only farm and food vendors.

A special market is planned for Friday, December 23, to allow cus-tomers to purchase their meal ingredients for Christmas and Christ-mas Eve celebrations.

Currently the market features produce, homemade sweets, mus-tard, bread, bagels, cheese, and maple syrup.

31st Annual Juried Photography

Exhibition

Exhibition Dates: January 21 – April 7, 2012

Warm up surrounded by stunning pho-tos at the Crooked Tree Arts Center this winter. Opening on January 21 from 4-6 p.m., the 31st Annual Juried Photography Exhibition at the Crooked Tree, located in downtown Petoskey, will present works of photographers from across the state of Michigan.

This year’s juror is Kim Kauffman from Lansing, Michigan. Kauffman’s photographs have been consistently recognized over the last 15 years by the American Advertising Federation with its highest award for excellence in ad-vertising, the “ADDY,” and in numerous national fine art photography competi-tions.Kauffman gained international recognition for a series of cameraless, filmless photographs titled “Synergy” when she received first place in the digital capture personal work category of PDN’s 1999 digital photography competition.

“My photography has always been driven by an exploration of new methods and reasons for making photographs. The act of photographing is an intuitive endeavor for me during which I suspend conscious analysis of what I am doing and become involved in the moment,

in the process at hand,” Kauffman said. Awards will be presented in the Ermy

B. & Gordon B. Bonfield Gallery at 4:30 p.m on January 21. The opening is free and open to the public. The Crooked Tree Arts Center is located downtown Petos-

Need some inspiration this winter? Here are some of the ongoing area exhib-its to help pass the time adding an artistic flair to the white and grey winter days.

On January 21 from 4-6 pm, the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey will open the doors to an exquisite new exhibition entitled “as small as a world and as large as alone…” This is an exhibition borne out of close observation of the world around us; a silent world of detail and private atmospheres, like the moment something catches your eye as you walk in the forest.

Five artists have been invited to create intimate views of nature. Harry Boyer of Harbor Springs displays glasswork of exquisite detail; Caesar Citraro of Petoskey delicately transposes moments in time to oil on canvas;Martha Fieber of Manistique creates mind-boggling landscapes in thread; Ladislav Hanka of Kalamazoo transforms close observation and scientific knowledge of nature to his work into etchings; and Kim Kauffman of Lansing has re-created and raised the bar on the world of still life photography.

This opening is free and open to the public. The exhibition will run from January 21 through April 7. The Crooked Tree Arts Center is located downtown Petoskey at 461 E. Mitchell Street. For more information please call the Arts Center at 231-347-4337 or visit www.crookedtree.org. This program supported in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

SlopesGotta Have Snow...Even if Mother Nature isn’t in the mood to bury northern Michigan in snow (which is, of course, what we love most of all), area hills have winter sports enthu-siasts covered with ramped up snowmaking infrastructure.

• Boyne Higlands and Boyne Mountain invested in new groomers to help with snow making.

• Nub’s Nub welcomes the addition of 11 new snow guns for ample snow making.

Even Beginners Can Do It... Don’t have equipment but dream of tearing up the slopes this season? Check out these new improvements to local hills’ rental departments.

• Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountain purchased 400 pairs of Head Link rental skis. The ski is geared toward beginners and enhances the ability to turn smoothly.

• Nub’s Nob invested in “rockered” shaped ski technology by purchasing Rossi-gnol skis for their rental department. This advanced design allows effortless turn initiation with rock solid edge hold.

The Thrill of Racing...Get skis waxed, spandex suit ready, and prepare to live out Olympic dreams (or future dreams for your rug rats) with these expanded race opportunities.

• Boyne Highlands will answer the need for speed by adding an additional night racing option: gates will be up Thursday and Friday.

• Champions aren’t born, they’re made, and Nubs Nob’s new Junior Alpine Racing Team, based on the USSA alpine racing program, will offer substantial training and racing opportunities for youngsters.

New and Improved...Northern Michigan’s resorts may have the monopoly on great Midwest skiing and riding, but that doesn’t mean they are willing to rest on their laurels. Here’s a few more reasons to love our hometown hills.

• Boyne Mountain’s slope side clock tower lodge re-cently underwent a half of a million dollar reno-vation.

• Nub’s Nob completed a land swap with the State of Michigan which expanded the hill’s property acre-age. In the years ahead, skiers can expect expanded cross country ski loops and additional downhill ski runs.

And the winner is...Forget what we tell the kids-- bragging is perfectly acceptable.

• The results of Transworld Snowboard Magazine annual reader survey poll saw Nub’s Nob earn the top spot in Michigan and among the top three parks in the Midwest and was voted “#1 Vibe in the Country.”

13NORTHERN MICHIGAN WINTER LIFE - WINTER 2011-12

By Danielle McIntosh

Who knew that pizza, french fries, and peanut butter and jelly had anything to do with skiing?

Northern Michigan ski instructors like Richard Wren, the children’s program director at Boyne Highland’s Snow Sports Academy, know when teaching youth-- especially youngsters between ages three and six-- using fun and catchy terminology (that speak to stomachs as well as minds) is the perfect way to keep kids engaged in the how-to of alpine skiing.

“You have to use terms that kids can relate to. If you keep telling them ‘wedge,’ they aren’t going to get it, but they know the shape of a pizza,” Wren said with a chuckle.

Early ski lessons are about teaching the basics and familiarizing kids with the sport, Wren noted.

“It’s about safety, so they don’t hurt themselves or others, and about making it fun so they want to learn,” he said.

While Boyne’s Snow Sports Academy specializes in group lessons, across the way, Nubs Nob’s Winter Sports School emphasizes the importance of one-on-one.

Winter Sports Director, Rebecca Behm, said that private lessons are the saf-est and most effective way to develop skills.

“We believe that this method offers a more advanced lesson. In a group, you only learn as fast as the slowest person,” Behm said.

She added that for those that do desire a group setting, the new “Panda” lessons are available for ages five to seven. They offer a five-to-one student to teacher ratio and even a visit from Nub’s new panda mascot.

At both Boyne Highlands Snowsports Academy and Nubs Nob Winter Sports School, students learn to safely get on and off the lifts, how to stop, control speed by turning and about navigation.

“For the older kids, we teach how to get around the the runs and read maps, and for the little guys, where to find help if they get separated from mom and dad,” Wren added.

Exposing kids to skiing at a young age is a great way to encourage life-long winter sports enthusiasts, Wren said.

“Because muscle development is just starting in toddler age kids, it is actually easier to teach mechanics because they don’t have to retrain their muscles. As they grow they can build on the skills they have,” he noted.

Wren and Behm agree that parents can go along way in preparing kids for ski school, though they advise that even the most advance adult skiers should take their children to a ski academy.

Parents can help by exposing kids to equipment and cold temperatures before throwing them out on the hill.

“Dress your kids up in cold weather gear, so they know what it feels like. Let them walk around the house in their ski boots. It means one less thing for them to have to adapt to during lessons,” Wren said.

Wren reminded parents how crucial it is to get equipment that fits, and to steer clear of hand-me downs. Boyne and Nub’s rental departments carry a full-line of child size gear and some local sporting good stores have “junior fit” programs that allow parents to purchase equipment once and trade up in size as the child grows.

If your child is three years old and eager to ski, he or she is ready for les-sons. Instructors work on basics development and build confidence through innovative teaching in a fun and playful environment. Both group camp and private lessons are available locally.

The following area nature preserves were suggested by the Little Traverse Conservancy as great choices for getting outdoors and experience the beauty of the north up close.. on foot, snowshoe or cross country skis -- and even in the dark

The Headlands (600 acres, just outside of Mackinaw City)

Purchased by Emmet County with assistance from Little Traverse Conser-vancy, the 600-acre Headlands property has recently been designated a

Dark Sky Park. (Sky watching is an excellent winter activity since it is dark so early and so long). The trails of this beautiful property are groomed for skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and a plowed parking area is also available. The Headlands likely has the most diverse bird life of county properties, because of its location and proximity to the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Goodhart Farms Preserve (665 acres, just east of Good Hart)

A special “winter-only” parking lot at the east end of this Preserve is plowed to provide parking for access to 5.2 miles of groomed trails. Trail difficulty ranges from flat to hilly, with several options to loop around. The property includes both woods and open fields, opening the possibility to winter bird sightings.

Elmer Johnston Preserve (220 acre, one mile east of Goodhart)

Just north of the Goodhart Farms Preserve, located on Church Road, this preserve has safe roadside parking. Old two-tracks and farm lanes wind through open fields and forest. Though not groomed with equipment, the 1½ miles of trails are used throughout the winter, providing a consistent track for cross country skiing. The steep slopes create fun and challenging skiing, regardless of ability level. These trails are also great for snowshoe-ing. Find your way to the top of the hill for one of the best views in Emmet County, looking out over Lake Michigan to Beaver Island.

Offield Preserve (390 acres, Harbor Springs)

This large preserve offers a quiet place to ski or snowshoe just a few miles from downtown Harbor Springs. Currently, the trails aren’t groomed, but neighbors and school groups use the trails frequently throughout the win-ter. Parking areas off Quick Road and Hedrick Road will be plowed during winter.
