are due to anyone for the first time in three weeks. Well, that’s not entirely true. Apologies are always

due to those Sainted Editor lampoons, but those are delivered up front before he poison pens a word. Some speakers, like today’s Kathleen Cunningham, slyly request an advance copy of

One wonders if John understands the definition of invidious disincentive. Be that as it may, he awarded “the real John Pittman” his 8-year Perfect Attendance pin. Ean arose to arouse our gambling instincts. He is hosting at his home

(3736 Interlaken) a $100-stake Texas Hold ’em Tournament for 18 players on Saturday, 21 April, from 6 pm until the last player slinks out the door.

Players receive credit for the $100 with the Rotary Foundation, and the winner receives a $1,000 credit. Ean promised to email us all the particulars. Donning his City Manager hat, Bruce suggested including Police Chief Greg Rushin on that mailing for comment and possible raid. Ean countered that he

had looked into the gray areas of the law and concluded that, since “the house” received no cut, he and Jan are in the clear rather than on the lam. John marveled that Ean was not only his own CPA but also his own attorney! (Let’s see…then what kind of client would he have?)

John also commented on Mark Johnson’s fetching pajamas as the latter began thanking the Club for its remarkable turnout of volunteers for

the Dentistry With a Heart program ALL DAY TOMORROW (as you read this). Mark says that we’ve already got 150+ clients lined up but that he expects many more as the word spreads. It will be held at Lone Star

Crossing, 5800 Coit (just south of the big box Walmart). Randy Wright (now beardless) arose to an unkind chorus of groans. He is spearheading Soap Box Derby on 12 May, and he wanted to identify three key members to whom we apply for our marching orders. The first was publisher Kenny Wilson, acting as the Course Manager. The Race Administrator will be Jim Cooper, and the Race Director is to be David McWhorter, who is seeking “some geeky person” to program the race timer. (Way to catch flies with vinegar, David!) Chuck Morgan introduced the day’s talk on a program coming to the Dallas Arboretum entitled Chihuly in Nature. He also introduced speaker Kathleen Cunningham, Director of the Speakers Bureau for Arboretum with the following remarks: Today’s program, entitled “Chihuly in Nature,” will be presented by the Dallas Arboretum. Dale Chihuly, creator of extraordinary hand blown glass sculpture, is coming to Dallas! Today we’ll get a sneak preview of the imaginative glass sculpture he’ll install throughout

the Arboretum grounds. Chihuly’s dramatic garden exhibitions have amazed audiences around the world. Our program will be presented today by Kathleen Cunningham, Director of the Arboretum Speakers Bureau. Kathleen is a volunteer at the Dallas Arboretum and serves on its Board of Directors. She has also served on the Board of the Women's Council of the Arboretum. Not only is she the Director of the Arboretum

Speaker’s Bureau, but Kathleen often gives entertaining talks to various groups across the Metroplex about the Arboretum and its many activities. In the early days of volunteering at the Arboretum, she was a docent at the historic DeGolyer House. Formerly, Kathleen was Assistant Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Texas Credit Union League. She and her husband are passionate ballroom dancers who perform professionally around the Dallas area, are the parents of two grown sons, and the proud grandparents of four grandsons. With hair in the severe do of someone intimately familiar with flamenco, Kathleen reminisced about the “wonderful time” she had here at Rotary last October. (See “A Diamond in Dallas.” What? You don’t archive these gems?) She was here today to bring us a preview of the Arboretum’s hosting of World Renown Glass Sculptor Dale Chihuly’s exhibit in the gardens. The exhibit runs from 5 May through 5 November, but the gardens will be open throughout next month as the pieces are installed, so we can watch it grow. This is not Chihuly’s first garden installation. He began such efforts with Chicago’s Garfield Park in 2001. Others include the New York Botanical Gardens (2006) and even Kew Gardens in London! Kathleen saw one such exhibit and thought to herself, “If only the Arboretum can capture that,” it might increase membership and attendance by 300% as it did for other gardens. Atlanta estimated that it brought more than $40M into their economy. Even more might be expected here in Dallas.

Even Chihuly’s non-garden installations evoke Nature. His “fioris” (thin pasta dough, moldable into shapes) on the ceiling of the Bellagio in Las Vegas are a case in point. It is massive, a 70’x30’ installation. From his studio in Seattle, The Boat House on Lake Union, he is “redefining glassblowing.” He rendered his first piece at age 20 and took an Interior Design degree in 1965. He studied at Venice (presumably Murano), Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Ireland (Waterford?), and Israel. To support his studies, he was an Ice Boat fisherman in Alaska. He obtained his MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) from Rhode Island School of Design, where he taught for 15 years.

His eye lost to an auto accident makes for difficulties in depth vision that has influenced his works. He designs by rough sketches painted on the floor that assistants turn into finished pieces in glass. Standard glassblowing technique has the molten matter caught on

pipes and blown into shape by, according to Kathleen, gravity, centripetal force (spinning), fire, and spontaneity. He has started the Pilchuck School of Glassblowing in Washington state. (Pilchuck is Inuit for “blood-red river.”) The venue, a former tree farm, was donated by its previous owner. Professionally, he is one of “only four Americans to have a one-person show at the Louvre. An American genius.” Some of the works to be displayed will be custom-designed for the Arboretum. That will be the case with 10’ icicle tower slated for the entranceway. (Salesman that she is, Kathleen pointed out the members-only entrance to the left and noted that she had 10% discounts on memberships “today only.” Get ‘em while they’re hot.) A 32’ icicle graces the central lawn.

Apparently the sculptures are sturdy enough for Texas weather if not Texas youth. Gardeners are planning on protecting the pieces from the latter with cacti. The Jonsson Color Garden gets “cattails.” 8’ herons inhabit the mists. The Paseo sports “The Star,” a tribute to Texas football. There will be a “Citron Tower” in the fountain, a favorite haunt for the 300 weddings the Arboretum hosts

annually. Playful “belugas” (white whales) guard the Garson House, which will be surrounded by “red reeds.”

“Floats” will occupy the Step Fountain while “Glass Palm Towers” tower over the Women’s Garden. A chandelier is to sit curiously in the Pensive Poetry Garden while a 15’ “Sun” shines even at night. Cary Israel asked about the number of pieces. There will be 15 major works. In response to John, Kathleen would be thrilled with more sponsors, but Bank of America and AT&T will do. She requested that volunteers step forward and mentioned a 4 May Gala at which Chihuly will be in attendance. Citing the exhibit as “another reason to love Dallas,” John gave her our pin and made a donation to Shoes in her name. After Randy auctioned off $50 tickets to Rutledge for $150, John led the 4-Way Test and closed the meeting at 12:56.
