Top Authors to visit NHSGGC libraries The Newsletter of the NHSGGC Library Network Winter issue: January - March 2014 H L F In February 2014, as part of the Six Book Challenge reading initia- tive, six author visits are being planned thanks to funding awarded from the Scottish Book Trust Live Literature Scotland Scheme. Due to the seemingly ferocious appetite of NHSGGC staff for crime fiction, we have invited the following authors to come along and talk about their work: Christopher Brookmyre, Karen Campbell, Alex Gray and Denise Mina. We are really excited about having these high profile writers visit our sites! We hope that staff will take a short break from their working day to come along and meet these authors and hear them read from, and discuss their novels; after all, it would be a crime to miss it! Author visits are also being planned for staff based at the Central Decontamination Unit at Cowlairs and the laundry at Hillington. Please contact Tracey McKee ([email protected]) for more details about these visits. More details about the authors involved can be found on the Scottish Book Trust website: www.scottishbooktrust.com/author-search For more information about any of these visits or to book your free tickets please email Edith Rae at: [email protected] or call 0141 211 5975. RecommendedResourceA look at useful and informative resources frombeyond the NHSGGC Library Network.

This month the focus is on the Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO).http://www.scotpho.org.uk/

The website is jointly provided by ISD Scotland and NHS Health Scotland and includes the GlasgowCentre for Population Health, National Records of Scotland and Health Protection Scotland.ScotPHO has a wealth of information including statistics, reports, policies and strategies. Thisresource should be of interest to anyone working in healthcare and/or with a remit to improve thehealth of the Scottish population and reduce health inequalities. Of particular interest are theScotPHO profiles, which provide an overview for specific geographical locations, population groupsand health topics. These profiles also highlight variations in health across the country and helpidentify priorities for health improvement.

Gartnavel General and the Western Infirmary librar-ies recently hosted a course of meditation sessionsfor NHSGGC staff. Held on Tuesday and Thursdaylunchtimes over 7 weeks, these sessions gave staffthe chance to break away from the stresses of theworking day and give meditation a go.Teachers from the Glasgow Buddhist Centre led thehalf-hour sessions which focused on mindfulness, breathing, relaxation techniques and other meditationconcepts. Staff who attended the sessions reportedthat the experience was positive with benefits forthem personally and professionally. Many said theyfelt calmer and less stressed during and after thesessions and that they were able to pick up medita-tion tips and skills to use in their day-to-day lives. Many thanks to the Glasgow Buddhist Centre andHealthy Working Lives for supporting this project.

If you are interested in mindfulness, meditation or other ways to help reduce stress and feel morerelaxed, the NHSGGC Library Network has a wide selection of books available on the topic.  For moreinformation contact [email protected] / 0141 211 3013 (x53013).

The 2014 Six Book Challenge has now officiallybegun and for the first time all staffed librariesthroughout NHSGGC are giving their users thechance to take part. The idea of this initiative is to challenge participantsto read six books within a 6-month period. The focusis on reading for leisure and the books you choosecan be fiction or non-fiction depending on yourpersonal preference. Everyone who signs up isencouraged to try out genres they may not usuallyread, especially if they are already regular readers.Successful challengers will be eligible to win variousprizes including book tokens and a Google ‘Nexus7’ tablet! Participants will receive an incentive suchas a bookmark or pencil for each book they complete.

All staff are encouraged to get involved and as those who have taken part before will know, participants don’t need to be regular readers to get the most out of the challenge. In fact, one of thekey aims is to encourage people who don’t get the chance to read as much as they’d like to set asidesome time to pick up a book. Everyone is welcome to apply but spaces are limited so if you’reinterested in getting involved then please contact your local NHSGGC library as soon as possible toregister or to find out more.

For the first time the Six Book Challenge is at an NHSGGCLibrary near you… wherever you are.
