DALE ROGERS TRAINING CENTER

Cheryl Moore DRTC Board President

Connie Thrash McGoodwin, M. Ed, Executive Director

Michael T. Jones PR Manager, Staff Writer

Gayle L. Curry, Graphic & Media

Coordinator, Publisher

Brian Landreth PR Assistant

Graphic Designer

Connie Thrash McGoodwin, M. Ed. Those “Feelings” Never Really Leave

GRATEFULNESS I’ve been a CEO in Texas and Oklahoma for around 35 years. I have never lost that feeling of gratitude, of being part of something bigger than myself, of being one of those lucky ones who wound up in a vocation they were actually good at and love being a part of.

Conversely, I also never completely let go of that feeling that something terrible could go wrong – someone getting injured, a tornado, a major funding cut, or someone choking on a kumquat, anything that might tarnish the agency’s amazing reputation and credibility that it has earned over the last 60 years.

I could fill 50 single spaced pages with the names of people or companies

whose advocacy and support DRTC is eternally grateful for.

FLYING ABOVE THE RADAR Our days of flying below the radar are long gone. I keep telling my Board of Directors that the numbers are against us. When I started here, there were maybe 50 teens and adults with disabilities, a small sheltered workshop and 12 employees that wished I’d go back to Texas. I’m an ESTJ on the Myer’s-Briggs Personality Profile in addition; a simplified personality indicator called True Colors tells me my predominant colors are “gold and blue”. Translation: I go by the rules, I treat everyone the same (no favorites) and there are consequences to people who make bad decisions or choose to break rules. I’ll always do what is right for the agency.

The passing time and numbers tell the story. We serve 1,250 folks plus their families; we have 5 in-house businesses and 6 locations. We have federal contracts at Tinker and Altus Air Force Bases, hundreds of employees and are licensed and accredited by over 60 different entities. Someone, somewhere, despite their training and experience will, for whatever reason, have a bad hair day or make a bad decision that will result in a significant negative and public consequence. It is

amazing that it hasn’t happened in the 30 years I’ve been here.

IT’S CALLED LIFELife is about ups and downs and while DRTC has had its downs, we have to be honest- 2014 has been a fabulous year for us! Thanks to our systems driven culture:

Besides basking in the media from our 60th anniversary a year ago, we have:

• Obtained a three year national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities

• Made perfect (as in 100%) scores on Developmental Disability Services and AbilityOne surveys and we rocked our audit again

So while it is great that we can dot all our I’s and cross all our T’s, the more important accomplishments are:

• Our folks with disabilities earning 5.5 million in wages

• Placing 163 people with disabilities in community jobs

• Unique new training and working opportunities in framing, trophy making, fast food (pizza)

Last but not least is the LAUGHING, DANCING and PRIDE you see every day at DRTC.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!(Remember Robin’s Corner Gift Shop www.drtc.org )

Theresa Flannery presents the framed Holiday Cards to Crystal & Bruce.

Hirst Awards OKLAHOMA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION HIRST AWARDS BANQUET

“SHOP FOR A CAUSE! SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES!”

We have a holiday card contest for DRTC folks to submit their art for the new card design every year. Well this year we had so many great drawings it was just plain hard to pick one; so we picked two! The winning art was framed by Wyman Frame as a thank you for their creativity and a Prism Place plaque was hung in their workplace. Congratulations to holiday artists Bruce (Turtle) and Crystal (Snowman) for being our winners!

The following individuals were recently honored at the Oklahoma Restaurant Association Hirst Awards banquet for superior years of service to the Oklahoma food industry. Gayle McGuire, Mike Hulsey, Nancy Killmeyer and Michael Jones attended the event representing Dale Rogers Training Center.

DDS Survey

The Developmental Disabilities Services of the Department of Human Services conducted its annual

survey of the services funded at Dale Rogers Training Center (DRTC),

including Vocational Services,

Special Needs; Mobile Workforce and

Community Integrated Employment. After

evaluating 114 conditions, DRTC passed with 100%.

Pelco Products WHAT DO PRISM PLACE & PELCO PRODUCTS INC. HAVE IN COMMON? Dale Rogers Training Center! Pelco is a business partner that hires people with disabilities and we wanted to thank them with this Prism Place award of their mascot Phil the Pelican! It has all the signatures of the Mobile Workforce team on it. Prism Place is a subsidiary of DRTC that creates stunning awards and trophies and also employs people with disabilities!

Flanked by fancy figurines, a shiny lunch box and a harmonica still in its colorful packaging, the tiny red piano with its worn keys and scratched paint is clearly both passionately used and lovingly preserved. In 1953, famed Western entertainer Dale Evans Rogers published the memoir “Angel Unaware: A Touching Story of Love and Loss,” in memory of Robin, her daughter

with fellow star Roy Rogers. Robin, who died just shy of her second birthday from complications of the mumps, had Down syndrome. The red piano was Robin Rogers’ favorite toy, a fitting choice for the daughter of “The King of the Cowboys” and “The Queen of the West.” Now, it is arranged behind glass along with a toy record player, a soft white blanket and portraits of a little girl who will forever be 2 years old but still managed to make a big difference.“Dale Evans Rogers really credited Robin with making their family closer,” said Connie Thrash

McGoodwin, longtime executive director of the Dale Rogers Training Center.
