Cindy Baumgardner is a SwedishAmerican employee. This fall, she shared her SwedishAmerican story with the SwedishAmerican Foundation, a story that begins long before she was an employee, long before she was born, in the heart of the Great Depression.

It was the summer of 1933 in Rockford; a young couple was expecting their first baby. At a time when premature babies didn’t often survive, their baby arrived two months early, delivered at SwedishAmerican Hospital by Dr. Adolph Martin Swanson. In the midst of their joy came the couple’s realization that they could not afford the extra medical care the baby needed.

To pay for this, the baby’s father signed up for a position with a fishing vessel traveling to Alaska, though his salary would not cover both the medical bills and the family’s cost of living. The baby’s mother needed to help, so, at a time when so few mothers worked outside the home, she offered to work for SwedishAmerican and pay the baby’s medical bills with her salary. Soon, the mother was working in SwedishAmerican’s kitchen.

While the mother worked, the newborn slept at home, bundled in blankets, in a dresser drawer under her grandmother’s watchful eye. The baby’s grandfather would visit other Rockford homes with new babies to collect “mother’s milk” for the baby. When Dr. Woodward visited the house to check on the baby, in the heat of Rockford’s summer, he threw open a window and said, “I told you to keep the baby warm – not bake her!”

The baby, Beverly Sue (Gyllenswan) Baumgardner, is Cindy’s mother. Through the remarkable care of SwedishAmerican’s providers and the love of her parents and grandparents, Beverly lived and is, to this day, 85 years later, a SwedishAmerican patient.

Today, in addition to being a SwedishAmerican employee, Cindy is a SwedishAmerican donor. “I am confident these funds will help provide the technology, comfort, and care that will help tomorrow’s new mothers and tiny babies,” she says.

Seeing the Regional Cancer Center, Heart Hospital, Ryan Jury Child Development Learning Center, State Street entrance, Emergency Department, Women’s Center, and other major projects come to fruition encourages our involvement even more. By participating in giving, we have also been richly rewarded with meeting and establishing lifelong relationships with other like-minded people. Memorializing relatives and friends through bricks, paver stones, and a bench has provided us with still other opportunities to show our gratitude.

“Through excellence in healthcare and compassionate service, we care for our community” is SwedishAmerican’s mission. Through the years, the SwedishAmerican Foundation and its caring staff has supported this mission by not only helping the health system achieve its goals, but by supporting many non-profit organizations in the Rockford community through its grant program.

Cindy Baumgardner is a SwedishAmerican employee. This fall, she shared her SwedishAmerican story with the SwedishAmerican Foundation, a story that begins long before she was an employee, long before she was born, in the heart of the Great Depression.

It was the summer of 1933 in Rockford; a young couple was expecting their first baby. At a time when premature babies didn’t often survive, their baby arrived two months early, delivered at SwedishAmerican Hospital by Dr. Adolph Martin Swanson. In the midst of their joy came the couple’s realization that they could not afford the extra medical care the baby needed.

To pay for this, the baby’s father signed up for a position with a fishing vessel traveling to Alaska, though his salary would not cover both the medical bills and the family’s cost of living. The baby’s mother needed to help, so, at a time when so few mothers worked outside the home, she offered to work for SwedishAmerican and pay the baby’s medical bills with her salary. Soon, the mother was working in SwedishAmerican’s kitchen.

While the mother worked, the newborn slept at home, bundled in blankets, in a dresser drawer under her grandmother’s watchful eye. The baby’s grandfather would visit other Rockford homes with new babies to collect “mother’s milk” for the baby. When Dr. Woodward visited the house to check on the baby, in the heat of Rockford’s summer, he threw open a window and said, “I told you to keep the baby warm – not bake her!”

The baby, Beverly Sue (Gyllenswan) Baumgardner, is Cindy’s mother. Through the remarkable care of SwedishAmerican’s providers and the love of her parents and grandparents, Beverly lived and is, to this day, 85 years later, a SwedishAmerican patient.

Today, in addition to being a SwedishAmerican employee, Cindy is a SwedishAmerican donor. “I am confident these funds will help provide the technology, comfort, and care that will help tomorrow’s new mothers and tiny babies,” she says.
