Next Chopwell Regeneration Group Meeting Next Regeneration Group Meeting – Sunday 12th January 2020, 7.30pm The Officials Club Please come along to keep informed about what the Regeneration Group are doing in our village. www.chopwell.org Pump Track It’s the biggest thing to happen in Chopwell for many years!! A pump track is a cycling circuit, with rollers, banked turns and features designed to be ridden completely by riders “pumping”— generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing. Ours is going to be built by Velosolutions, who make the tracks for the Pump Track World Championships. Visit their website at www.velosolutions.com for some amazing videos! It will be in Chopwell Park and will have two loops: a symmetrical loop on which 2 people can race head-to-head (both starting in the centre) and a smaller one (on the left of the diagram below) is for beginners and small children – including toddlers on balance bikes! Access will be open to anyone with a bike, skateboard or scooter (or even rollerblades!). Friends of Chopwell Park have said “We want as many people as possible to enjoy the pump track and will involve schools, youth groups and cycling clubs. Our pump track will also be up to national competition standard and will attract cycling enthusiasts from far and wide”. Construction is likely to begin early in the new year and the track should be ready for its grand opening around Easter. A HUGE thank you to Mandi and the Friends of Chopwell Park for making this happen. Moorland Green – Up to 205 new homes now have planning permission for south Chopwell. The estate will be called Moorland Green. Gleeson Homes plan to employ local people and businesses, so look out for job opportunities and tender processes. They say new hedgerows will mitigate the loss of local wildlife habitat, and predict up to 8 years of local disruption. The Regen Group have asked for a timetable and details. The reality is that the quicker they sell, the quicker they will be built and the disruption will end. So please encourage everyone to spread the word! Prices will begin at around £110,000 for 2 beds, with 4 beds costing around £180,000. Gleeson Homes website has more information. Heartlands – House building may finally commence in the heartlands in 2021/22. A Gateshead Council/Private Partnership plan includes around 200 much needed, sustainable family homes. To quote one local councillor ‘I am more optimistic that the houses will be built there than I have ever been in the last 40 years’. Over the next few years Chopwell could therefore grow by a quarter with over 400 new homes. This is a real opportunity for local businesses and services. Winter 2019 Regeneration Group News Chopwell

Chopwell Scouts Turning 90 – Next year, 1st Chopwell Scout Group celebrate 90 years of Scouting in the village. This is a major milestone and the group have delivered skills for life to hundreds of young people during that time. As part of the celebration, they are gathering together as many old memories as possible. If you’ve got stories or photos to share, please get in touch with them: [email protected] See ‘Whats On’ panel for Scout Group events.

Secretary Role – Could you be our secretary in Chopwell Regeneration Group? This is a director role, (unpaid as is everyone on the Board), but very rewarding. It is mostly administrative - taking minutes, organising meetings, managing email accounts, liaising with website administrator. It has taken Ronnie Stuart between 5 and 10 hours per month. If you are interested, please contact [email protected]. Our Chair Jodie Barwick-Bell will arrange to meet you to discuss. It would be great for your CV! Wartime Teatime Vintage Tea Party – held on

1st Nov to co-incide with putting the Poppies on the wheel. This was a fabulous afternoon and a great success raising £720 shared between the British Legion Poppy Fund and Help The Heroes. A big thank you goes to everyone concerned.

Chopwell and Blackhall Mill Partnership (i.e. Chopwell Community Association, Blackhall Mill Community Association, Friends of Chopwell Park and Chopwell Regeneration Group) have been successful in getting a grant from the Big Lottery for £50,000. This money is to develop a shared plan to transform Chopwell - the money will be spent on a Community Development Worker and specialists to help us develop the communities ideas into proper business plans, and to identify funding sources.

Struggling With Debt? – Get free advice in Chopwell. The festive season is fun, but it all costs money. January can be hard when money is tight. Free, confidential advice can really make a dif-ference. Citizens Advice Drop - In (Tues or Thurs mornings at the Community Centre) can help. Debt advice is a major part of their work, so no need to be embarrassed.

Chopwell Hotel – The Hotel is again on the market for sale. The Regen Group have been advised that the property is worth significantly less than the price the owner will accept. As a charity we cannot raise money to pay more than it is worth, so will not be buying it as things stand. We truly hope someone comes along and offers a price the owner is willing to accept and saves the building. The Old Bank Building – Plans are progressing to turn this unused building into a Community Room downstairs with gallery space and a cafe and the possiblity to run evening restaurant events. The upper two floors will become office/ art / craft workshops of various sizes which can be rented out to local people to grow their businesses. This is a huge project and it’s likely to be 12 months before we see this Creative Hub take shape.

THANK YOU…… To all of the people who do the ‘little things’ around the village – picking up litter, weeding the flower tubs, cutting back overgrown trees, clearing paths, making extra planters, cutting grass etc etc. You know who you are – THANK YOU from everyone in Chopwell.

Italian Pop up – Luigi’s Trattoria held on 19th Oct was a huge success - guests had a fabulous meal and were treated to a visit from a leading Magic Circle North East Magician. The event raised over £560 for the Regen Group. Thanks to the Pop up Team and the Masons.

Become a Culture Vulture! – Sage Free Tickets - If you’ve never seen the Royal Northern Symphonia at the Sage, Gateshead ‘Classical First Timers’ can get up to 2 free tickets for any Sage RNS concert. Box Office 0191 4434661.
