A message from Administration: January is already off to a great start, with meaningful learning opportunities for our students. As we move through the winter months, there are many educational initiatives and some important pieces for you to be aware of:

A reminder to our families, when the temperature or windchill is between -25°C and -27°C a shortened recess period may be warranted. When it is below -27°C, recess is usually moved indoors. This is at the discretion of the principal. Temperatures are used as posted at The Forks by Environment Canada.

In February, the school will be hosting a School Wide Fundraiser. This fundraiser is not sponsored by our Parent Advisory Councils. It is school run, and the money collected goes to support school programming, including areas that impact all students (e.g. classroom accounts for activities, events and special projects, specialist areas like PE and Music). Stay tuned for more details that will go out to families about our Read-a-Thon School Fundraiser. Thank you so much for considering supporting the school!

Registrations for new Kindergarten students for the 2020-2021 school year will begin on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Parents must bring one piece of identification for proof of age: a birth or baptismal certificate or a passport for their child. For proof of residency, we require two pieces of information from the following list: a driver’s license, a Manitoba Health card, a tenancy agreement or an offer to purchase document to help us identify that Springfield Heights is the designated school for your child to register. If you or someone you know has a child entering Kindergarten, please share this information with them. Information is also listed on our website.

As shared in the letter that when home to families before the winter break, Springfield Heights School is in the process of beginning an elevator project. Our prime concern is the safety of our students and staff. As new information about specific details come to our attention, please be aware that staff will be speaking often with students about safety during construction. You could support this process at home by encouraging your child to listen actively to adult instructions.

Finally, a thank you to the many families who are promoting student safety by parking in appropriate areas on Sharron Bay and neighboring streets. There should be no parking in the bus loop and staff parking lot when taking children to and from school. Clear signage designates parking and no parking areas. In front of the bus loop, there is a small area with signage that indicates “loading”. This serves as a drop off area for students. If you are needing to park your car and walk students into school, please choose the parking options on Sharron Bay. We appreciate your help in this area in order to keep our students safe.

We are looking forward to a busy, yet exciting few months ahead.

Winter Weather Information Transportation Cancellation Procedures In the event of severe weather, this procedure will be followed: 1. The decision to cancel buses and/or close schools will be made by the superintendent in consultation with the

director of transportation.

2. The decision to close, if it is made, will be conveyed to the transportation supervisor in Sunrise School Division for its students who are transported to River East Transcona schools.

3. Everyone is asked to listen to the media for announcements regarding bus cancellations and/or school closures.

4. If it is necessary to close schools, or bus students home early during the school day because of severe weather, schools will be contacted by phone by the superintendent's department. If transportation is cancelled in the morning, this cancellation will apply for the whole day.

The general rule is that if the wind chill is -45 C or colder at The Forks (as posted by Environment Canada at about 6:10 a.m.), we cancel buses for the whole day but schools usually remain open. All metro Winnipeg school divisions follow one system, based on this rule. We will post an alert message on this website home page, if buses are cancelled. Major radio stations will also announce busing cancellations. They usually broadcast cancellations about every 15 minutes. You can also check local television stations and the Internet. IF BY 6:45 A.M. WE HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED OR POSTED A CANCELLATION ALERT, BUSES ARE RUNNING. Here are the stations that will announce bus cancellations:

Please don't call our transportation office, our Administration Offices or media outlets. Doing so ties up phone lines. Instead, please access information as outlined above.

Extreme Cold Weather Guidelines:

When the temperature or windchill is between -25°C and -27°C a shortened recess period may be warranted. When it is below -27°C, recess is usually moved indoors. This is at the discretion of the principal. Temperatures are used as posted at The Forks by Environment Canada. Procedures for responding to extreme weather conditions, such as cold, lightning, hail and storms, should be included in patrol training. The following cold weather guidelines should be communicated to patrols and to the parents/guardians of patrols. During extremely cold weather, the following guidelines for an abbreviated student patrol schedule will be followed:

If the wind chill is between -27C and -34C, a patrol’s time at their post is not to exceed 10 minutes. If the wind chill is between -35C and -40C, patrols will only be at their posts for five minutes, and posts more than a five-minute walk from the school will not be patrolled.

If the wind chill is -40C or colder. There will be no patrols on their posts

How to Dress • Scarves, hat, mitts, snowsuit, boots, etc. • Do not restrict the vision of the patrol. Snowbanks restricts motorist’s vision, stand behind the snowbank, cross the children when it is clear or when all motorists have come to a complete stop. *In winter, stand one metre back from the curb instead of one footstep. If a vehicle loses control, it gives the patrol

Village du Peré Noël

On Friday, December 13, 2019, students from rooms 2, 4, and 7 went on a field trip. We went to the Village du Peré Noël at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre. While we were there, we saw a puppet show, Santa and Mrs. Claus. We made some magic cookies that turned into real ones when they were put into the oven. We saw some elves and even made a house for one of them. We thought that they were funny. We recommend that you go here next year. The class from Salle 4

The English Ukrainian Bilingual Program Celebrates St. Nicholas!

On December 12, all EUBP classes took part in a celebration of St. Nicholas. An assembly was held to honour our "guest of honour" as well as share the celebration with the other Kindergarten to grade 3 students in our school. Our performances included songs, poems, recorder playing, bell playing, and a little bit of Ukrainian dancing. Family and friends also attended this special event. At the end of the concert, St. Nicholas shared his words of wisdom, as well as some treats and candy canes for all in attendance! -Pani Loughren

Planetarium Field Trip for Rooms 8 & 15 On Friday, December 20, Pani Loughren's Kindergarten & Grade 1 class, as well as M. Kampen's grade 2 class went on a field trip to the Planetarium. For most of the students, this was their first experience at the Planetarium. The students were guided on a visual tour of the constellations. This was followed by a Christmas story entitled "The Alien Who Stole Christmas". The story took the students on a journey of each planet as Santa Claus delivered presents to all. What a great experience this was for our students! -Pani Loughren

Hero Letters -Mme Jorgensen & all of her heroes in Room 25

The grade 4 French Immersion students wrote letters to heroes in their lives.

Students discussed about what a hero is to them.

We discussed the qualities of a hero. As someone who would do anything to protect you, help you and love you.

We discussed how we may be a hero to someone else.

We realize that heroes are all around us and to appreciate their presence in our lives.

A hero can be someone who inspires us to become a better person in which will affect the people who surround us and to inspire them too.

A hero can be a person that we have not met, but that we connect with about who they are and what they have lived.

A hero can be someone who is with us every day and loves and accepts us for who we are today.

A hero can mean the world to one person.

You do not have to be famous to be a hero because you are a superstar to those who see you as a hero.

Our heroes can be a person or animal that has passed on but still remain close to our hearts.

Who are the heroes in your life? Maybe you are somebody’s hero and you don’t even know!

A Season of Giving - Room 20 (Ms. de Koning’s class)

Do you enjoy getting presents? Of course! But you know what feels even better? Giving! This year, Room 20 decided to “Be a Santa to a Senior”. There are many seniors in our city who don’t receive presents and we thought it would be nice to make them happy this holiday season! To get this job done in time, we had to work hard! We made and decorated cookies to sell so we could raise money for presents! We raised so much money that we were able to buy gifts for 10 seniors! Once Ms. de Koning bought the gifts, we all made cards to go with them! We also put together goody bags filled with lots of delicious sweet treats! We worked really hard to give them something special. Presents that they never expected! We had a blast and think we made others really happy! That is what Christmas is all about!

TABS for Wheelchairs

Springfield Heights School will once again be collecting pop Tabs! The Tabs will be delivered to Trailblazers Life Choices. This is a non-profit organization that helps find employment for adults with disabilities. They collect and sort the tabs and will donate them to someone in need.

Drop off your tabs in the front lobby of the school and help put someone in a new wheelchair!

Medical Concerns To ensure the safety of students who require medication during school hours, RETSD has established medically approved policies, procedures and guidelines. School personnel will administer medication, but only under strict guidelines and only when it is deemed essential to enable a student to attend school. Before school personnel will administer any medication, parents/guardians are required to contact the school and complete all necessary forms and procedures. For further information please contact Mrs. Ziprick.

Making Our Mark

If you have ever interacted with students from Springfield Heights School, you would know just how amazing they are! SHS has now created a way for members of our community to share their experiences! Presenting… the Community Response Sheet!

Members of the community who work with SHS students will be able to fill out a Community Response Sheet. This could be bus drivers, volunteers, student teachers, substitutes or presenters. This gives other adults the ability to share their experiences, gives teachers the ability to celebrate and teach through these experiences and gives students the ability to shine!

If you are visiting SHS and want the opportunity to fill out a Community Response Sheet, please see Mrs. Hicks in the office. We hope to leave a positive and lasting impression! -SIS Team

Illness and Going Outside at Recess

From time to time children are sent to school with bad colds, the flu, or other contagious conditions. This puts other children in their class/school at risk.

Please do not send an obviously sick child to school with instructions for the teacher to keep them in at recess. Teachers are on recess duty and are not available for indoor supervision of sick children.

If your child is too sick to go out for recess it is best they are kept home.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Lost and Found

There are a large number items in the lost and found bin.

If you are at the school, please check for lost items at the lost and found bin located in the hall near the office.

All unclaimed items will be donated to a charity at the end of each term.

Page 8: Winter 2019-2020 The Springfield Splash€¦ · As shared in the letter that when home to families before the winter break, Springfield Heights School is in the process of beginning

If you have a concern…

Your child’s school will always try to make the learning experience a positive, safe and happy one for its students. However, if you have a concern or an issue, please don’t hesitate to let the school know. Open communication between home and school is very important.

The RETSD Board of Trustees stresses the steps shown below must be followed if concerns are to be properly addressed. The trustees’ role is to hear all sides of the concern before making a decision on any appeal, to be the link between parents and the division, and to help with divisional processes and policies (such as this concern protocol). They realize that there is no greater advocate for your child than you, the parent.

Here are the steps to follow if you have a concern: Talk to the person most directly involved—your child’s teacher. If you must leave a message, please be sure to provide a day and evening phone number where you can be reached. If talking to the teacher doesn’t resolve the issue, talk to the principal. (The majority of parental concerns are resolved at either of the first two steps)

If you’ve talked to the principal and over a period of time the issue has not been resolved, call the superintendents department.

If your concern is not resolved by the superintendents department, you can make an appeal in writing to the board of trustees. The board of trustees will hear your appeal either in person or in writing, whichever you prefer.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Families, As I am sure that you have noticed, the use and popularity of e-cigarettes and “vaping” has been increasing in Manitoba. These trends come after years of decreasing smoking rates across the province, particularly among youth. This trend is concerning as the use of e-cigarettes is not without risk, with evidence emerging around addiction potential and harmful chemicals contained in the vaping liquid. Therefore, as a province, we want to ensure we are being proactive and that tobacco use is not simply being replaced by e-cigarettes. My office has provided a reminder to all schools that the use of e-cigarettes (as with conventional cigarettes) in any enclosed pub-lic space, including schools, is prohibited under The Smoking and Vapour Products Control Act. This prohibition is important to ensure that smoking, be it tobacco or e-cigarettes, is not normalized or thought of as a risk-free activity. As e-cigarettes are a relatively new technology, we want to ensure that parents are also able to access clear and balanced infor-mation to be able to talk to their children. We know that nobody is more influential on a young person’s decisions than their par-ents and would therefore like to encourage you to explore the resources available from

Health Canada - www.canada.ca/en/services/health/publications/healthy-living/talking-teen-vaping-tip-sheet-parents.html Please take the time to examine this information and to share it with others. Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable school year. Kelvin Goertzen Minister Education

Student Drop Off & Pick Up Guidelines

We continue to review practices and procedures to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors at Springfield Heights School. Safety procedures are as follows:

• Please make sure that students do not arrive at school before 8:30 am. Supervision starts at this time.

• Parents can stop, drop off and pick up students on Sharron Bay or the North Kildonan Community Club Parking Lot. However, do not park on Sharron Bay directly in front of the school. Students must use a crosswalk when exiting the front of the school or meeting waiting parents on Sharron Bay. A reminder that parents are asked to pick up or drop off students outside of the no stopping signs on Sharron Bay or on Mark Pearce Avenue or Kingsford Avenue.

• All parents/guardians arriving to school to pick up their child(ren) at the end of the school day are asked to wait in the front foyer or outside depending on the door children exit. This is to prevent disruptions to classes still in session and ensure that strangers are not given access to students.

• When children leave school early for appointments, etc., the parent/guardian is required to come to the office to sign a form with the child’s name, date, parent name. Please do not go to the child’s classroom. If parents are not known by front office staff, identification will be requested.

• At dismissal time, Kindergarten & bus patrols exit the front doors while Grade 1-5 students will use their designated doors. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We appreciate your support in helping keep all students safe!

RETSD Policies

Life-Threating Allergies Many Springfield Heights students have extreme allergies to different foods, in particular nuts and any nut product, oil or flour. The allergies range from mild to life threatening. Some children may have a reaction if an item is even in their proximity. As a nut-safe school, please do not send nuts or food containing nuts to school at any time.

Anaphylaxis Policy The division recognizes that some students attending schools may require the administration of medication in response to an acute allergic reaction. Therefore for the safety of students, staff, and parents/guardians, ―Anaphylaxis Procedures and ―Anaphylaxis Avoidance Strategies must be followed within the division. The complete policy is available on the website at: www.retsd.mb.ca/site/about/policylj/JLCG-R1 and JLCG-R2. You may also get a copy at the office.

Drug and Alcohol Policy As you may be aware, the Division has a policy on drug and alcohol use. The complete policy is available on the web at: http://www.retsd.mb.ca/site/about/policy/j/JICH.pdf. The policy has been adopted in the interest of the health, safety, social and emotional well-being of all students. The policy outlines 3 key areas: prevention, intervention and consequences. Families are encouraged to become familiar with this policy and contact the school with any questions or concerns.

Search Policy In addition, the Division has a policy guiding actions in the event a student and/or his/her possessions require searching. The complete policy is available at www.retsd.mb.ca/site/about/policy/j/JIH-R.pdf. Families are encouraged to become familiar with these policies and contact the school with any questions or concerns.

THANK YOU for helping us provide a safe environment for all our students.

Thank You for Signing In

All visitors & volunteers are requested to sign in at the office. The purpose of this is to help ensure the safety of our school and to manage the traffic congestion that can take place when visitors stop outside the classrooms in order to meet their children. At the end of the day, we ask parents to meet their children outside the building. This keeps hallways clear and allows staff and students to identify those who are helping out in our classrooms.
