We travel back in time and imagine a Victorian Surgeon: his workplace, his tools, his research and his work. It’s macabre to think of the lack of anaesthesia, the bi-standers watching in the amphitheatre and the lack of hygiene; but the imagery is intriguing, somewhat minimalist as we focus on the back-to-basics study of the anatomy, organs and human health.

We daydream of our own regal estate in the country, imagining the decadent surroundings, details and furnishings. Family portraits tell of days gone by, hang proudly on the gallery wall. Embellishments, sumptuous materials and baroque details combine, as nearly every surface has been carved into history. There is a timeless grandeur to this elegant trend, as perhaps our Grand Tour is undergone by the owner of this estate?!

his pattern expression aims to expose the normally-unseen elements of tailoring and the body. There is a questionable divide of where the body and clothing begin and end, as care labels dominate. The skin, muscle formation and veins are all great visuals, alongside exposed seams, tailors chalk and faux stitching

As a working sailor, we try to forget all of the myths and legends that potentially exist below the surface. There is a sci-fi element to this trend, which comes through in a retro quality of design. Tentacles and old scuba gear make for great imagery as well as the actual tattoos that the sailors adorn.

We are inspired by the lines of the land within Topography. Map designs have evolved into more simplistic linear versions, which remind us of satellite imagery of nightly-lit up cities. The beauty of water is also ventured.

SEASON MUST HAVE TRENDS #1

Compiled by Kerry Hildyard

Any colour as long as it’s grey By far and away the most popular colour at the shows was grey. Not too unusual for the cold weather collections you might think, but this season it’s the way it was styled from tailoring to tracksuit bottoms that boosted it into trend territory: with as many other shades of grey as possible (or all the same hue, if you’re feeling particularly bold). There was so much grey, in fact, that this is just a small sliver of the best looks..

The only coat you’ll need next season… Wherever you looked this season shapes were loosening up, but nowhere was this more clearly seen than with outerwear. Whether single- or double-breasted, the most popular coat of the season was cut from wool and with a soft shoulder that fell just off the shoulder to give a slouchy, oversized vibe.

Layer-up your knits Layering is, of course, the top priority when the weather turns - however next season it looks like the big styling tip to help you keep warm will be to pile your jumpers one-on-top of the other. The easiest way to do this, as seen at Pringle and Margaret Howell, is to invest in a thin merino wool rollneck and slip it under your thicker knits.

Go for square patterns and patches From flowers to butterflies to tapestry, there were so many patterns across the catwalks this season that it wasn’t until Paris that a true frontrunner for the season emerged - however when we looked back, we noticed squares were everywhere, whether used in big, bold blocks of colour or as patches on jeans...

Pockets are getting supersized Good news for guys who hate toting a bag around with them everywhere: pockets are going to be bigger than ever next season (i.e iPad Mini sized at a minimum). Not only that, but they’re going to be the focus of your next piece of outerwear, cut from conspicuously contrasting fabrics and sewn on in prominent positions.

Any green goes While grey was the big story of the shows, green beat off stiff competition from orange, pink and blue to be the second-most popular colour on the catwalks. However, no particular shade rose to prominence, with forest, dark, military and even mint green all making appearances in London, Milan and Paris. Next season the only rule is: there are no rules.

Shearling with everything It’s a classic menswear material, and with a definite Seventies vibe running throughout the shows, it was hardly surprising that shearling made a prominent appearance on next season’s catwalks. However, what was surprising was how it was deployed: not just as a coat lining (the most popular way to wear it), but also within trainers at Hermes, on bags at Louis Vuitton, on jumpers at Fendi, and in both dyed and natural shades on almost every catwalk.

Baggy trousers After seasons of trousers getting slimmer, this was the season designers swung to the polar opposite. Across the board, trousers were higher waisted and far looser cut - and while flares made the occasional appearance thanks to that Seventies sensibility that we already mentioned, the most popular style was more along the lines of the Zoot suits of the Forties and often cut from wool with a turn-up.

TRENDS SHOES #2 Block Colour & Print

• BLOCK COLOUR & PRINT Indeed, while subtly styled white trainers are making their presence felt, it seems our appetite for bold sneaks in eye-catching colours and all-over prints is equally voracious. But it’s not just bold block-colours that brands are opting for – show stopping prints are making their presence felt too.

This fall/winter trends for men are inspired by rugged nostalgia, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, utilitarian details, and traditional menswear. 1. The Statement Coat. Imagine Joseph's Technicolor Dream coat...then dial it back a notch. Fur, shearling, and tapestry-like fabrics in an array of inky colours and sumptuous textures are white hot in men's outerwear. That said, most guys can't honestly pull off purple brocade, so my suggestion is to choose a topcoat with one or two standout details (an interesting colour, cool buttons, awesome lining, etc.) and let that be your staple for the season. 2. The City Coat. What the heck is a city coat? It's a topcoat that translates well from day to night, similar to a trench or peacoat in style. Look for longer lengths in outerwear this winter and next. A coat that's mid-thigh or three-quarter length has the flexibility of being both formal enough for the office but casual enough to pair with jeans. 3. The Explorer Jacket. Imagine a Cousteau-worthy parka with an update. The modern man's utility jacket is functional (with plenty of pockets) and fabulous (lined with shearling). This trend is my favourite for its utilitarian details and warm, cosy comforts. Also known as a territory coat or field jacket, the style is classic, but today's version--made for the modern explorer--is crafted from high-tech fabrics that stand up to the elements.

This fall/winter trends for men are inspired by rugged nostalgia, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, utilitarian details, and traditional menswear. 1. The Turtleneck. Channel your inner Ron Burgundy, and "stay classy" with this wardrobe staple. The classic sweater works well oversized or snug, plain or multicolour, and with heavily marled textures or as a lightweight knit. (Just a side note, guys: paired with Italian wool, a fine-gauge turtleneck under a suit will make any woman swoon!) 2. The Slouchy Sweater. Don't kill the messenger. Remember those extreme knits (à la Dr. Huxtable) from the 1980s? I won't go so far as to recommend them, but I will suggest spacious chunky knits in monochromatic tones with nifty details like front "glove pockets" and cool oversized buttons. I guarantee these comfy crewnecks will be your favourite for the season.
