Winter Programs 2015Sometimes it is good to get away. When we get away, we step back from the ordinary routine. We rest and relax; we allow ourselves to be renewed. We take time simply ‘to be,’ instead of always ‘doing.’ We have time for listening and learning, sharing and reflecting. Star of the North invites you to an Away Days Retreat. Each Away Day will focus on a different contemporary spiritual book. Through a combination of presentations and reflective time, we will explore the themes and ideas of the authors, and apply their insights to our lives. It is not necessary to have read the books.

THURS. JAN 15: Forged in the Crucible of Fire and Love: A Day with Dorothy, The Long Lonliness, by Dorothy Day. Facilitator: Sandy PratherTHURS. Away Days

A central tenet of our faith is that Jesus came to inaugurate the Kingdom of God here on earth. Although this was the main focus of what Jesus preached and taught (without exception, all his parables were about the Kingdom of God), we pay too little attention to this great Good News. This retreat will explore the depths of this mystery, celebrate it ritually, and prayerfully help participants experience it more deeply. After all, St. Catherine of Sienna once said, “All the way to heaven is already heaven.” Through this retreat, we will taste a bit of that heaven more fully here and now. Facilitator: Archbishop Sylvain Lavoie OMI

Living in the Reign

The inner landscape of the individual is the key to unlock the door to personal integrity and connecting with others. When the elders from a bygone era claimed that “Wisdom can be learned, but it can’t be taught,” they knew something with which modern men and women struggle. How does one connect in a disconnected world? Where does a person turn to find authentic wisdom? Their collective response echoing across the millennia; look inside, risk becoming vulnerable. Participants will be invited to elevate their thinking, embrace imperfection and plumb the depths of their own, hard earned gems of wisdom. Vulnerability and reflection upon experience, identify the threshold across which a person must traverse to locate this wisdom. Facilitator: Dan Jelinski

Men’s Spirituality Retreat

3A St. Vital Ave. St. Albert, T8N 1K1

This session with Edmonton writer Myrna Kostash will begin with an account of her journey from her childhood in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, away from it for decades while she became a writer, a feminist and a humanist, and then inexorably back to the Church after a “visitation” by a Byzantine saint, Demetrius, in 1998. Participants will be invited to reflect and comment on their own journey that perhaps is a version of Kostash’s: spiritual beginnings within a family tradition, then adult explorations –even estrangement – away from this tradition, and a return later in life to a faith community, perhaps even to the one you grew up in!Facilitator: Myrna Kostash’s narrative is based on her recent book, Prodigal Daughter: A Journey to Byzantium (2010). She will give readings from it and illustrate the journey in a Power Point presentation.

In today’s world, where terrorism and unrest make the news, it is more important than ever for the Christian to be a witness to peace and nonviolence. Fr. Maurice Restivo, CSB, is a member of Christian Peacemaker Teams, an ecumenical organisation dedicated to nonviolent action for peace in troubled areas in the world. He will speak of CPT’s history and mission, and his personal experiences on team in Hebron, in the West Bank. Hebron is a microcosm of what is happening in much of Palestine/Israel.

Our spiritual tradition has often emphasized the importance of contemplative prayer as a foundation for a life-well-lived and for justice work. Fr. Maurice Restivo will look at some of the resources available for contemplation. We will spend some time in Centring Prayer during the session, and explore ideas as to how to integrate a practice of contemplation into a busy lifestyle. Facilitator: Fr. Maurice Restivo, CSB, STD

Acting for Justice as a Contemplative

Stories are Good MedicineTo be human, is to have a story, to tell a story, to be a story. Our personal and collective wisdom tales have transformative power. These inspirational vignettes, become our teachers. Wisdom, gleaned from reflected upon life experience and drawn gently into our imaginations, deepens our connections to self and others. Like an inner “sage” or “guru”, stories offer us doorways into new ways of seeing and being in the world. This “micro-workshop” will take us to a place, called “once upon a time….” In this special realm, stories from across the millennia, including Scripture and other traditions will provide spiritual guideposts. Stories familiar and new, will offer life giving “medicine” to sooth our mind, bodies and spirits. Facilitator: Dan Jelinski

Nuturing Your Soul SelfThe Soul is that part of us which is never separate from the Holy One, while the Self (also called Ego or Personality) is the vehicle through which we engage with life. Come away for a weekend of discovery and renewal, where you can honour your Self’s true purpose as a unique conduit for Soul expression. Four rhythms of spirituality will be explored - being conscious, centred, connected and committed - with opportunities for meditation, private reflection and engagement with others. An environment of safety will be cultivated where no one is made to feel uncomfortable, with a recognition that each journey with the Soul-Self unfolds gradually and is deeply personal. The weekend will include free time to spend as you choose, with Saturday evening set aside for fun and laughter. Please bring a journal with you. Facilitator: Sherry Dahl

A Starry Night: Table for Two Dinner

Recovering the “Alleluia!” of EasterThe season of Lent is a forty-day preparation to celebrate the great feast of Easter. This Lenten retreat will help us prepare by exploring the meaning of Lent in the light of Easter. Liturgically, the Holy Week celebrations from Thursday to Easter Sunday are one great liturgy traditionally called the Triduum. For many, the power of this special time has faded. With the help of spiritual writers Ron Rolheiser OMI and Thomas Keating O.C.S.O., biblical art, and the experience of forty years of ministry, this retreat will help participants not only understand this great Paschal Mystery more fully, but also experience Lent as a spiritual journey to the new life of Easter. Facilitated by Archbishop Emeritus Sylvain Lavoie

Mini O’s - Learn to Swim ProgramThe Olympian Swim Club’s Mini O’s Learn to Swim Program is based on the long term athlete development strategy presented by Swimming Canada. This program offers your child the opportunity to learn how to swim focusing on swimming technique and skills as a primary objective.

The Mini O’s Learn to Swim Program is designed for children (5 to 10 years old) with minimal swimming experience. The program introduces the basics of all four competitive strokes, allowing each swimmer to acquire the skills necessary to move into the more advanced levels.

Swimmers progress through these three stages:

Bronze: Learning This level involves learning the basics of water awareness, and safety skills around water. Basic competitive swimming principles of kicking, body position and entries are taught at this level.Silver: Building This level focuses on the basic movements and the fundamentals for swimming the four competitive swimming strokes. This level also builds on principles learned in Bronze adding simple rules of the sport, and promoting overall physical development in and out of the pool.Gold: AdvancingThis level advances all four strokes, increases endurance and technique. When this level is completed participants have learned the basic skills required for competitive swimming - all four strokes, turns and starts, and can move into the competitive program.

Mini O’s - Learn to Swim Program11 week sessions (2 classes per week)3 sessions from September to June30 - 50 minute classes

Did you know...........Statistics show that one of the leading causes of accidental death in children under the age of 14 is drowning.

The real tragedy is that it is preventable.

Research shows that children who learn water safety skills also benefit from overall cognitive, physical and emotional development.

75% of the world is covered in water. Can your child swim?

COMPETITIVE GROUPSThe Olympian Swim Club runs programs which are athlete centered, parent supported and coach delivered by professional swim coaches. Our development groups are dedicated to pursuing a strong aerobic background with a multi-stroke emphasis. Please call our office at 780-455-8457 for more information.

Junior Olympian Way (JOW)

JOW bridges the gap between the Mini O’s Learn to Swim program and the competitive program. Swimmers must be 10 and under at the start of the season for JOW. Swimmers are introduced to low level, fun competitions and skill development.

Olympian Way (OW)

This group is for children ages 8 to 11 throughout the season. Swimmers continue to develop all four competitive strokes, skills, starts and turns with an emphasis on skill development for racing.

Junior Age Group (JAG)

Swimmers in the JAG groupo are aged 10-13 at some point throughout the season. Swimmers in JAG will develop mastery of basic technical skill elements and understand tactics and strategies for racing and training. They will continue to race on all four competitive strokes with a balance of speed and endurance events.

Youth Development (YD)

Aspiring young teenagers have a program that is dedicated to supporting the specific training requirements of swimmers 13-16 years old. Athletes compete locally, regionally and provincially. The emphasis of the group is continued mastery of skill elements and a balance of speed and endurance in all strokes and events.

Performance Based Groups

Placement in these groups is based on previous performance and specific standards being met. These groups work on perfecting training habits and the advancement of technical and tactical skills both in and out of the pool. The training intensity increases as well as the training load. Swimmers compete regionally, provincially, and nationally.
