  • The Bible tells us a lot about Jesus, even in the Old Testament. Today’s Bible passage

    tells us who Jesus is and what he will do when he comes. This Psalm shows us that Jesus is

    righteous and just. It tells us he will be around forever, that he “will rule from sea to sea,”

    and that kings and nations will bow down to him.

    Jesus is pretty awesome, but one of the best things he does for us is to act as a

    mediator between God and us! Because of Jesus, we can talk to and hear God!

    Bible Point: Jesus does great things.

    Key Verse: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man

    Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

    Charade ParadeSome evening this week, have your family play this fun game. Have each family member think

    of something fun that the family could do together, such as make cookies, watch a video everyone wants to see, go on a walk, or go to a favorite fast-food place to eat. Have each person write an idea on an index card. Then have each family member try to get the rest of the family to guess what he or she has written. The activity that family members guess first will be what you do that night. You may want to do this several times this week if you want to fit in everyone’s idea!

    This week kids committed to praying about a situation they need Jesus to mediate. Help your child weave

    faith into life this week and follow through on this commitment!

    Q: What does “Immanuel” mean?

    Are you weaving faith into your life?

    Can you imagine how Joseph must have felt when he found out Mary was going to have a

    baby? Joseph loved Mary and didn’t want to embarrass her, so he planned to quietly break the

    engagement. Then he could get on with his life. But while he slept, an angel appeared to him and

    explained what was really happening with Mary. The baby was from the Holy Spirit, and it was a

    boy. They were to name the baby boy Jesus, and he would be the Savior that Isaiah prophesied

    about. Joseph married Mary, and they named the baby Jesus, just as Joseph had been told to do.

    • Ask a trusted adult about a time he or she trusted God’s plan even though it didn’t seem to make sense. What happened?

    • Each night this week, before going to bed, ask God to help you trust him with your problems.

    • Write a letter to God explaining why it’s hard to trust him sometimes and asking him to help you during those times.

    Hope for the Future BookAs a family, create a “Hope for the Future

    Book” that shows what each family member hopes for his or her future. You can either purchase a scrapbook album or make one

    yourself. To make one, use construction paper for the inside pages and create a cover from poster board. Punch holes in all pages (including the cover), and use ribbon to tie them together.

    Have family members each talk about the things they hope for. These could be things like going on a trip, which college to go to, or someday living in a different city or town. Then in the pages of the book, paste pictures from magazines, draw, or write about each family member’s hope for the future. When you’ve finished, pray together as a family to trust whatever God’s plans are for these hopes.

  • Caesar Augustus wanted a census taken. So Joseph and Mary had to go to

    Bethlehem to register. Mary was about to have a baby any day, and she and Joseph

    needed a place to stay. But every inn was filled. Where would they stay? The only place

    available was a stable. And that’s where Jesus was born. Mary wrapped him in cloths and

    laid him in a manger.Meanwhile, out in a field, an angel appeared to some shepherds. The angel told th

    e

    shepherds about Jesus’ birth and that he was the Savior who had been promised.

    The shepherds hurried to find Jesus, and when they did, they were very excited! They

    ran to tell everyone they could. They went back to their fields glorifying and praising God.

    Bible Point: Jesus was born to be our Savior.

    Key Verse: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to

    the Father except through me’” (John 14:6).

    Sing the Good News!Make up your own Christmas song about

    why Jesus’ birth is important to you. You don’t have to play an instrument or even sing well. You could even make up words to sing to a familiar Christmas song, such as “Away in a Manger,” “The First Noel,” or “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Just praise and glorify God as the shepherds did on the night of Jesus’ birth!

  • BIBLE FOCUS (THE BASICS)During the reign of King Herod, Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem. Magi cam

    e to

    Jerusalem from the east because they were following a bright star that was to lead them to a

    new king. “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?” they asked. “We have seen

    his star in the east and have come to worship him.” Well, as you can imagine, King Herod did

    not like the sound of that. After all, he was king over the Jewish people and if a new king had

    been born, that meant that he would soon be out of a job. There was no way he was going to let

    that happen, so after he talked to his advisers on Jewish teaching to find out exactly where this

    birth was to take place, he said to the Magi, “Bethlehem is the place! Go and find this newborn

    king, and when you do, come back and tell me so I can go and worship him, too.” Something

    tells me King Herod had other plans for baby Jesus.

    The Magi set out for Bethlehem, again following the bright star. The star shone right over

    Jesus. The Magi bowed down and worshipped him and gave him all sorts of gifts and treasures.

    When it was time for them to go, God warned them in a dream not to go back and tell King Herod

    where they had found the new king. Then they went home a different way.

    Bible Point: Anyone can worship Jesus.

    Key Verse: “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all

    and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be

    saved’” (Romans 10:12-13).

    Three-Armed RaceThis is a three-armed race! Use a

    bandanna or a scarf to tie two of your family members together at one of each of their wrists. Now they are two people sharing three arms. Have them try to do everyday tasks such as folding clothes, tying their shoes, or making a bed. They’ll have to work together to finish the tasks. You could take turns and time one another, or if you have an even number of people in your family, you could compete in teams.

  • Soon after Jesus’ birth, the ruler in Israel, Herod, heard that the new king had just been

    born. He didn’t want anyone other than himself to be king, so he made plans to kill Jesus.

    He told his soldiers to kill all the babies in the area who were 2 years old or younger. But an

    angel from God appeared to Joseph and told him to take Jesus out of that land to another

    one, where he would be safe from Herod. Joseph followed God’s guidance and left with Jesus

    and Mary. Later, after Herod had died, Joseph returned to Nazareth. Each time God guided

    Joseph, Joseph followed God’s lead, and he and his family were kept safe.

    Bible Point: God guides us.Key Verse: “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who

    trust

    in him” (Nahum 1:7).

    Role-Play ResponsesAs a family, take turns creatively thinking

    up role-play situations in which God might guide you. Have two or three members of the family act out listening to God’s guidance and responding to it in each situation. You may even want to play a Follow the Leader game in which one family member guides the rest of the family on a household journey.

    As an opportunity to tell others about God’s guidance, invite friends and their families over to play this role-play game.

  • Jesus came to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. At first

    John wouldn’t do it. He said, “You should be the one baptizing me.” John must have

    understood who Jesus really was. After Jesus convinced him that for now it had to be

    this way, John agreed to baptize him. As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, an

    amazing thing happened. Heaven opened, and the Spirit of God came down like a

    dove and landed on Jesus. Then, as if that weren’t amazing enough, the voice of God

    said from heaven, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” It was

    God’s way of introducing Jesus to the world.

    Bible Point: Jesus is God’s Son.Key Verse: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the

    Word was God” (John 1:1).

    Family TimelineCreate a family timeline like the one

    you made in your group. Place a sheet of paper on a table. Have each family member add important events to the timeline. Then talk about how God and Jesus have been with you throughout each event. Even if your family is new to church, you can still look back and see that God was with you even before you knew much about him!

  • Andrew and John passed Jesus along the road as they were walking. John pointed his finger toward the

    man. “That’s the Lamb of God!” he said. Andrew wanted to learn from the Son of God, so he asked Jesus,

    “Where are you staying?”“Come and you will see,” Jesus replied.

    The rest of the day Andrew listened as Jesus taught him about God. They became friends.

    Andrew just couldn’t wait to share the good news with his brother. “Simon, Simon, I’ve found him! I’ve

    found the Son of God! Come and see for yourself.”

    Simon came with his brother Andrew to see the Son of God with his very own eyes.

    When Jesus met Simon, he called him by name and even knew his father’s name.

    Does Jesus know you as a friend? Are you part of God’s family, too? Become a friend of Jesus, and you

    can be part of God’s family today.

    Bible Point: Jesus is our friend.

    Key Verse: “Yet to all who received him, to those

    who believed in his name, he gave the right to become

    children of God” (John 1:12).

    Postcards and LettersSend a postcard, letter, or text to a family member or friend, inviting them to attend church with you and to enjoy a meal with you after the service.

    Have everyone participate in writing the message. Plan a special meal together that everyone can help prepare. Have each person contribute one item to the meal.

    The most important thing to do in preparing for your company is to pray. Everyone can pray that the visitor would decide to become a child of God.

    Your family can continue this tradition of inviting others to church followed by a meal. It’s a great way to strengthen the bonds of friendship and to help others learn more about Jesus.

    healing the

    sick. His popularity grew with every miracle, and crowds hurried to be near him. They traveled from

    far away just to be near the Son of God and to touch him. Jesus rewarded their long journeys by

    instantly healing their lifelong illnesses. Just a touch from his hand or a simple word and suddenly all

    their pain and suffering were over.Others came to Jesus because he cared. He cared that they were hurting. He care

  • Everyone had gathered around the teacher, wondering what he had to say—probably hoping he would lead

    the Israelites in victory over the Romans. “Maybe he’ll tell us how to strike them down,” some must have thought.

    “Blessed are those who mourn,” Jesus said. “Blessed are those who are persecuted.”

    “Excuse me? Maybe I heard you wrong. We’ve had enough mourning and enough persecution. After all, we’re

    living like slaves under the Roman leaders.”

    But Jesus continued. His words must have been so shocking yet so refreshing: “Be meek. Be humble. Be pure.

    Show mercy.” Jesus turned the world upside down in the famous teaching that’s often called the Beatitudes.

    He showed the world that God cares about our hearts more than our abilities. Jesus challenged everything

    most people feel is important and encouraged them to go after and hold on to the things of God.

    Bible Point: God blesses us when we choose his ways.

  • One day, as Jesus taught a large crowd of people, he began to speak about salt and

    light. He told the people that they were the “salt of the earth.” He said this because just

    as salt has the power to change the flavor of food, we, as Christians, have the power to

    show people who Jesus is. He also told the people that they were the “light of the world.”

    He said we can let our lights shine before men so that people will see our good deeds

    and praise God. Jesus wants our actions to be Christ-like so that people will come to

    know Jesus by our godly actions. He also wants us to be salt to people, helping them

    understand how Jesus can change their lives for the better, just as salt can improve the

    Shining Your Light Choose a person or family who you would specifically like to shine your lights on. Think about what kinds of actions you can do that will help them see Jesus. Take opportunities to do those actions with or for them, and then watch to see what impact your shining lights have. Later, as a family, share your feelings about this experience: your fears, excitements, and hopes. As you discuss this, make sure to note that our Christ-like actions should shine every day, not just during planned activities like this one.

  • • Have you ever had doubts about God? Talk about them.• What do you do when you’re struggling

    with doubt?• How has God proven himself to be

    Jesus had sent the disciples across the lake as he stayed to pray. As the disciples

    fought the wind, Jesus walked out to the boat—right on the water! No wonder the disciples

    thought they were seeing a ghost.Peter must have thought it looked like fun because he asked Jesus if he could jo

    in in.

    Jesus told Peter to come on out. But Peter did what we so often do when things around us

    get rough. He started thinking about the wind and stopped just looking at his Lord.

    When he began to sink, Jesus quickly reached out his hand and helped Peter. That’s

    just like our God; even when we doubt, he reaches out his hand to help us along.

    Bible Point: Jesus helps us believe.

    Key Verse: “If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself”

    (2 Timothy 2:13).

  • “Zacchaeus was a wee little man…” Yes, he was short, but he thought big! Zacchaeus wanted to

    see Jesus. He must have heard of Jesus and the amazing things he was doing. As Jesus came

    through Jericho, Zacchaeus, being unable to see over the crowd, ran up ahead and climbed a tree.

    When Jesus reached the spot where Zacchaeus was perched, he looked up and called Zacchaeus by

    name to come down at once.

    Now Zacchaeus was overjoyed that the one he had been seeking was also seeking him. Jesus

    even wanted to come to Zacchaeus’ house and hang out with him. Zacchaeus’ heart was so

    changed that he decided to give away half of his possessions to the poor.

    Only Jesus can change someone from a greedy tax collector to a generous believer. When we

    look for Jesus, he receives us and accepts us because Jesus accepts everyone.

    Bible Point: Jesus accepts everyone.

    Key Verse: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the

    door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).

    love for you and change the dough to show how that makes you feel.

  • Jesus had been preaching and teaching as he traveled all through the land.

    Everywhere he went, crowds and crowds of people gathered. Everyone wanted to see

    him and hear what he had to say. One day, some people wanted Jesus to touch and bless

    their children. They tried to get close to Jesus, but Jesus’ disciples told them to get away.

    The disciples told the people not to bother Jesus. But that’s not the end of the story.

    When Jesus saw what was happening, he became upset. He told the disciples to let

    the little children come to him because the kingdom of God belonged to people who

    were like children. In fact, Jesus said that anyone who refused to come to God as a little

    child wouldn’t be allowed to enter his kingdom. Of course, Jesus didn’t mean that only kids

    could enter God’s kingdom! He meant that we need to have the simple faith of children.

    So Jesus took the children into his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them.

    Bible Point: Everyone is important to Jesus.

    Key Verse: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the

    kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14).
