What’s NewGood News @ your library! You can now borrow and view past St. Clair County Board of Commissioner meetings on DVD. Your library holds a collection from August 2007 – present that are free to check-out.Port Huron: The main floor area will be going through some changes over the coming months. Currently, nonfiction (factual) books are being moved, so if you’re unable to find what you’re looking for, feel free to ask a librarian. The reference section, which is material that cannot leave the library, is also being moved. Changes to watch for: expanded space for videos, DVDs and music CDs, as well as a designated area for teens. Look for bigger changes in 2008! Marysville: You may notice a new addition in the Juvenile section at the Marysville Library. The Friends of the Marysville Library purchased bookcases to display new books, children’s music CDs and books on CD. The Marysville Funeral Home has sponsored ten new publications so keep your eyes open for new children’s magazines.Memphis: The library building is looking great due to much needed new siding. Thanks to the City of Memphis for their support.St. Clair: The St. Clair Library was awarded a $1,000 grant from the St. Clair Foundation. The grant paid for a digital projector for the library. The new equipment was introduced at the First Thursday lecture in September. In other purchase news Coldwell Bank Realty and Riverview Community Federal Credit Union donated twelve magazine subscriptions. The Friends of the Library bought new chairs that will be used for programs. The St. Clair Branch Library invites you to come to one of their popular programs. For more information on events see the Program Guide on pages 3 – 6.Yale: The Yale Library received a new roof in September. The city paid for the project, which was completed by Richards Construction. It was a much needed replacement since the old roof had been leaking. Make sure you continue to watch for new improvements inside and out!

In August of 2006 the voters of St. Clair County approved the library’s millage request. During that campaign, we made several promises. One was the restoration of library service hours. In January 2007, library branches opened with an increase of hours from 470 to 568.5 hours annually across the system. This is equal to the hours that we had before the reduction in 2005. The plan also included the opening of the Burtchville Township facility as a full service branch. This is done. The usage of this Branch is exploding. We also promised to re-establish the free computer classes offered to the public. It is proving to be extremely popular. Our classes are full with waiting lists. This is a needed public service.Another promise was to reduce our deficit spending. We have just completed our 2008 budget, which is balanced.

The budget was more difficult than we had anticipated. When we prepared our millage needs, the assumption was our other revenue items would be stable. However, penal fines, our second most important revenue, have been declining due to less state and local traffic patrols. As a result, we have not been able to fund service to the homebound. This remains a goal, once our income returns.

We increased our programming ability and added 6-day van delivery as promised. The State’s budget problems have affected our services with increased costs. Further State cuts could have repercussions to very basic library services, such as inter library loans and access to information as well as reduced aid.Use of the library has been increasing steadily. Circulation of library material has increased for 22 consecutive months. Some months we experienced a 17 percent increase. Use of other library services is also increasing. The number of hours and people using our computers consistently increases. The number of people attending our programs is up. Our usage of online databases and public computers is up.The Library Board and staff are working on a number of projects to improve services. These include: - developing policies to have wireless connections in all our facilities - participating in a Long Range Planning process and getting citizen participation to improve library services - replacing our system to schedule and filter the patron computers to maintain a family-friendly environment - implementing an Appropriate Library Use Policy to ensure a better library environment for all - continue to actively seek the return of library materials and payment of fines - increase the Library Endowment fund in the Community Foundation of St. Clair County to provide more services in the future - pursue the upgrade of the Main Library’s building needs - continue 6-day van delivery to quickly meet patron informational needs - review electronic databases for patron use 24/7The library branches are very busy places. Our usage statistics are increasing monthly. The St. Clair County Library System continues to adapt to meet the needs of the public by “connecting you to a world of information.”

We’re just about finished celebrating 90 years of library service while planning for the next three, five, and beyond. By the time this newsletter reaches you, the library system will have started its long range planning process. Thanks to everyone who took advantage of the opportunity to “let your voice be heard” and completed the Library Planning Survey and/or attended a focus group meeting at the library. The information you shared with the St. Clair County Library Board and staff will be most helpful

Looking for a fun and educational experience for the family? Visit your local library and check out a museum - for free.
