The 2005 Kentucky Fruit andVegetable Conference in Janu-ary will give growers a chance

to share ideas and learn from expertsin fruit and vegetable production.

The event, scheduled Jan. 3-4 at theHoliday Inn North in Lexington, will bea joint conference of the Kentucky Horti-cultural Society, the Kentucky VegetableGrowers Association and the KentuckyGrape and Wine Short Course.

The conferencewill offer learningopportunities forbeginners and ex-perienced growersalike. Concurrentsessions will covercommercial treefruit, greenhouses,vegetable produc-tion and farmers’markets. Partici-pants also will hear about heirloom veg-etables and specialty crops, tree fruitintegrated pest management, cut stemproduction and value-added process-ing, cooperative marketing, organicfarming, and small fruit production.

Michael Judge and Mac Stone of theKentucky Department of Agriculture’smarketing office are scheduled topresent a produce marketing update onJan. 3. Janet Eaton, the department’sfarmers’ market coordinator, will lead aconcurrent session on farmers’ marketson Jan. 3. The KDA’s Chris Kring willpreside over a concurrent session on or-ganic farming and gardening on Jan. 4.

Fruit and vegetable specialists fromacross the United States will speak to

joint conference sessions on the firstday. Special out-of-state speakers in-clude Wesley Kline, Rutgers UniversityExtension vegetable and herb specialist;Fred Whitford, Purdue Pesticide Pro-gram coordinator; Jerry Cajka, districtdirector, Investigations, Midwest FieldOffice, Alcohol, Tobacco Tax and TradeBureau; Dave Lockwood, University ofTennessee Extension fruit specialist; andAlan Straw, UT small fruit and veg-etable specialist.

Gwynn Henderson will speak on“Dispelling theMyth: PrehistoricIndian Life in Ken-tucky” at the ban-quet Jan. 3. TheKentucky VineyardSociety will host anoptional “Celebra-tion of KentuckyWines” where par-ticipants may

sample wines from 10 Kentucky winer-ies prior to the banquet.

Registration is $25 and includes aone-year membership in the KentuckyHorticultural Society or the KentuckyVegetable Growers Association and entryinto the Grape and Wine Short Course.

The conference is jointly sponsoredby the University of Kentucky Coopera-tive Extension Service, Kentucky StateUniversity and the Kentucky Depart-ment of Agriculture.

Billed as America’s largest indoorfarm show, the National Farm Machin-ery Show will feature nearly 800 exhibi-tors displaying heavy machinery, handtools, computer equipment and otherproducts. The show also will offer freeseminars on the U.S. agricultural mar-keting outlook, agronomics and a week-end marketplace television taping.

The University of Kentucky’s an-nual winter lambing school willbe offered Jan. 25 at the UK Ani-

mal Research Center near Versailles.The school will focus on the essen-

tial skills producers need to manageewes through the critical stages of lategestation, lambing and early lactation.New producers can learn how to man-age ewes and lambs during the lambing

The University of Kentucky Col-lege of Agriculture is hostingthe Kentucky Beef Conference in

January to help producers “Plan To-day for Tomorrow’s Markets.”

“Planning for tomorrow’s marketsnow is a big concern among producers,”said David Herbst, UK Cooperative Ex-tension agent for agriculture and natu-ral resources in Adair County. “We willtalk about how long this current marketmay last and what producers can do toposition themselves and their businessto benefit now and in the future.”

The conference will be Jan. 27 at theFayette County Cooperative Extensionoffice in Lexington.

Speakers will include RandyBlach, executive vice president ofCattle-FAX; Phil Meyer, owner of

Bohannon-Meyer Insurance Companyin Versailles and manager of BluegateFarm in Fayette County and theBohannon-Meyer Farm in WoodfordCounty; and Dennis Walter, owner and

operator of a beef cattle operation inCampbell County who serves in manyleadership roles in the Kentucky BeefCouncil and Kentucky Cattlemen’sAssociation.

The Kentucky Beef Expo will adda breed show and sale in its 18threnewal March 4-6 at the Ken-

tucky Fair and Exposition Center inLouisville.

Gelbvieh has been added to the listof breeds, bringing the total to 14. Ex-hibitors also will show and sell Angus,Beefalo, Charolais, Chiangus, Limousin,Maine-Anjou, Hereford, Red Angus,Red Poll, Salers, Shorthorn and Sim-mental. In all, more than 600 head oftop-quality show heifers, donor pros-pects and herd bulls will pass throughthe sale ring.

The expo again will host the PenHeifer Show and Sale for registered orcommercial cattle in pens of two orthree head. About 110 head are ex-pected for the popular pen sale.

The Junior Heifer Show and theSteer Show on March 6 will add awardsof $500 for Kentucky Supreme Cham-pion, $300 for Reserve Champion andother awards for third through fifth ineach event. The top five exhibitors ineach show will be awarded a total of$7,500 in prizes, including $1,000 forfirst place. The open show and Ken-tucky-owned breed champions and re-serve champions each will win $50 and$25, respectively, as well as a banner.The junior jackpot shows are open to all4-H and FFA members nationwide.

A cattle judging contest for 4-H andFFA members, a trade show and thebull and female display also will be of-fered at the beef expo.

The 2004 beef expo generated salesof $737,130, an average of $1,495 perhead. Two bulls sold for $10,000 ormore. Forty-four head of Angus aver-aged $2,270 per head, 23 Salers aver-aged $2,100, and 30 Shorthorn averaged$2,033.

KDA’s work touches every Kentuckian every day

My first year as your com-missioner of agriculture hasbeen challenging and educa-

tional. Along the way, the KentuckyDepartment of Agriculture has accom-plished many great things. Here arejust a few.

The Department made great stridestoward establishing an animal identifi-cation system that will enable us totrace an animal to its point of originwithin 48 hours in the event of a diseaseoutbreak. The need for this systemreally hit home when the U.S. Depart-

ment of Agriculturereported an inconclusiveBSE test in an Americancow in November. Atthe Paris Stockyards,buyers heard about theannouncement by cellphone literally momentsbefore that day’s CPH-45 sale began, and pricessuffered as a result.

Any system is goingto create an additionalexpense for our producers, and I againwill ask the General Assembly to helpfarmers pay for animal identification.

The Department responded to out-breaks elsewhere in the United States ofvesicular stomatitis in livestock andsudden oak death in plants in 2004. Wekept up the fight against West NileVirus. If soybean rust attacks our cropsin 2005, we’ll be ready.

The KDA’s marketing office helpedmore Kentucky food producers selltheir Kentucky Proud products. Gover-nor Fletcher and I announced a newprogram for state resorts to buy Ken-tucky Proud produce. Our marketingstaff helped Washington County porkproducers sell 12,000 pounds of pork to

Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derbyweek. Our goal is to have everythingthat is sold at the Derby to be Kentucky-grown or -produced. Kentucky led theSoutheast Region in agricultural exportswith the assistance of KDA’s inter-national marketing staff.

It’s been said that if you don’tnotice a basketball referee, then he’sdoing a good job. If that’s true, then ourconsumer and environmental protectionoffice had a great year. The Departmenttouches consumers every day throughour regulatory activities, which includeinspections of gasoline pumps, scalesand amusement rides, just to name afew. Regulatory compliance is our goal,and our regulatory people work hard to

protect the safety and well-being of thepublic. Like referees, our employeesdon’t always get the credit they de-serve, so I want to publicly thank themfor all their hard work on behalf of you,the consumer.

I am especially pleased that in 2004the KDA participated in benefits forDare to Care and Kids Café food banksand Court Appointed Special Advo-cates for children. We also divertedUSDA commodities to help hurricanevictims in Florida.

I’m proud of our professional, con-scientious staff for everything they ac-complished in 2004 to keep our farmerson the farm, lift the standard of living ofour rural communities, and protect theconsumers of Kentucky every day.

We face some serious challenges inthe months and years to come. With thetobacco quota buyout, the state’s ruraleconomy will never be the same. I liketo look at challenges as opportunitiesthat are waiting to be found, and thebuyout is going to create all kinds ofopportunities for rural Kentucky. TheKentucky Department of Agriculture isleading the way to help our farmerssucceed and our rural communitiesprosper.

Kentucky beef producers havevoted to increase the manda-tory assessment for Ken-

tucky’s beef promotion program ifthe national program is terminated.

In a statewide referendum heldDec. 7, voters elected to raise the statecheck-off by a margin of 2,019 votesfor to 442 votes against.

The referendum asked bovineanimal producers to increase the man-datory assessment for the Kentuckyprogram from 25 cents to $1 per headonly if the federal check-off programis discontinued. Funds would be usedfor beef promotion, consumer infor-mation, producer communication, in-dustry information and research.

The Kentucky State Board ofAgriculture approved the KentuckyCattlemen’s Association’s request fora referendum in its October meeting.

The United States Supreme Court

on Dec. 8 heard arguments on theconstitutionality of the national beefcheck-off and is expected to rule inthe first half of 2005. A federalappeals court has ruled that beefproducers do not have to pay thecheck-off fee. The Supreme Courtruling will affect other national check-off programs.

The $1-per-head national beefcheck-off raises about $85 million peryear for promotion and research.

The Kentucky Pork ProducersAssociation applied with the stateagriculture board in December for areferendum to create a mandatoryassessment of 40 cents for every $100in swine sales if the national porkcheck-off program ends.

The pork check-off also has beenchallenged in court, and in 2003 a fed-eral appeals court upheld a districtcourt ruling that the pork check-off isunconstitutional.

The Southern United States TradeAssociation (SUSTA) allocatedmore than $150,000 to assist five

Kentucky companies in promotingtheir products internationally in 2005.The funds are provided by a USDA-sponsored program called MarketAccess Program (MAP) – Branded.

SUSTA’s MAP Branded programprovides companies from 15 southernstates and Puerto Rico up to 50 percentreimbursement for certain eligible inter-national marketing expenses.

Kentucky companies that partici-pated in the MAP program betweenOctober 2002 and September 2003exported more than $62 million in agri-cultural products, the most of any statein SUSTA.

“This new funding will be investedto help Kentucky companies compete inthe global marketplace,” Kentucky Ag-riculture Commissioner Richie Farmersaid. “We are grateful for SUSTA’s con-

fidence in the Kentucky Department ofAgriculture’s international marketingprogram and Kentucky’s fine agricul-tural companies.”

Two of the Kentucky companiesare first-time applicants to SUSTA’sBranded program; the other three arereturning program participants. Usingthe Branded funds, the Kentucky com-panies will promote products that in-clude ice cream, alcoholic beverages,wood barrels and animal feed, for atotal of more than $300,000 in overseasmarketing spending.

SUSTA, a non-profit trade organi-zation promoting southern U.S. foodand agriculture products overseas, isfunded by the USDA’s Foreign Agricul-tural Service. SUSTA’s goal is to in-crease the export of food andagricultural products from the South,and to assist small and medium-sizedcompanies.

Donkeys and mules once werethe backbone of Mexican agri-culture. Over time they were

replaced by machines, but now Mexi-can farmers are finding that the ani-mals still are the best choice for someuses. They’re durable, they’re smart,and they can get to more places thanthe best ground-chewing vehicle – amust in the most rugged parts of theMexican highlands.

A Kentucky producer is helpingMexico restore its stock of jacks, or maledonkeys. Dr. Steve Aaron of A-JacksMammoth Jackstock Farm near Leba-non Junction is working with Mexicanauthorities and the Kentucky Depart-ment of Agriculture’s trade office inGuadalajara to sell jacks to Mexicanfarmers through the Mexican state ofJalisco’s secretary of rural development.

“When they harvest their coffee andother crops, mules can get into moun-tainous areas where they can’t use evena four-wheel drive,” Aaron said. “Lastyear they were unable to harvest all oftheir coffee crops, and when they lookedfor mules, they found they had none.”

Mexico has good horses but needsjacks to breed to mares to producemules.

“I sold them on the idea to havetheir own gene pool of jacks and jennets[female donkeys] so they can becomethe mule production center of allMexico,” Aaron said. “They jumpedright on that. Originally they were justconsidering the importation of mules,which would have been only a short-term solution.”

At press time, Aaron was workingout the logistics to ship the first load of12 jacks to Mexico in early 2005. He willdeliver the jacks to the border, wherethey will be transferred to a govern-ment vehicle and taken to Guadalajara.

Aaron plans to sell a total of 50jacks to Mexican farmers. Jacks cannotbe hauled nonstop on a long trip butmust be off-loaded periodically to befed and watered and exercised, Aaronsaid. That makes it necessary to trans-port them in small, manageablenumbers.

Aaron, the medical director of theKentucky Department for MedicaidServices, said this first order will allowbetter understanding of travel expenses,

transport time and export procedures atthe border.

Aaron traveled to Guadalajara inNovember to talk to producers and vet-erinarians about the advantages of ac-quiring jack stock and using mules inthe field. He gave a lecture about thehistory of donkeys and mules from theirorigins in Spain, their many uses andtheir needs. The lecture drew more than100 people. He also gave television in-terviews. Before he left, people were

approaching him to place orders forjacks.

“I really think they’ve got more of ademand than they know,” Aaron said.

Aaron credited the Guadalajaramarketing office, which the departmentshares with the Economic DevelopmentCabinet, for helping facilitate the sale. “Ican’t say enough about Marcos Castilloand his crew,” Aaron said. “Everythingthey did was professionally done. Ken-tucky has to be proud of their efforts.”

It’s easy for kids to get their handsdirty. Soon, Kentucky schoolchil-dren will be able to get their hands

dirty and learn about science and agri-culture at the same time.

The Agriculture Adventures – Ken-tucky program will begin appearing inKentucky schools this fall. It will bedemonstrated at the KentuckyCattlemen’s Association conventionJan. 8 in Owensboro and in pilot presen-tations during the spring and summer.

Agriculture Adventures – Ken-tucky is a production of the COSI sci-ence museum in Columbus, Ohio. COSIstaff present an educational and enter-taining program to schoolchildren andgive them hands-on activities that en-able them to discover agriculture’s con-nections to everyday life while also theylearn science, technology, math, nutri-tion and other subjects.

“Agriculture Adventures – Ken-tucky is a perfect fit with the KentuckyDepartment of Agriculture’s other edu-cation activities,” Agriculture Commis-sioner Richie Farmer said. “COSI hasmore than 40 years of expertise in teach-ing children. It will provide valuablelearning opportunities for thousands ofchildren throughout the Common-wealth.”

“The program educates childrenabout the origins of our food and fiber,and does it in a fun way,” said RayettaBoone, coordinator of Kentucky Agri-culture and Environment in the Class-room Inc. (KAEC), a nonprofitagriculture education agency adminis-tered by the Kentucky Department ofAgriculture.

KAEC and COSI have signed athree-year agreement in which COSIwill create and carry out the Kentuckyversion of its COSI on Wheels program.COSI is developing the Agriculture Ad-ventures – Kentucky program with in-put from KAEC and the other sponsors.Agriculture Adventures – Kentuckywill be similar to the COSI on Wheelsprogram conducted in Ohio schools butwith a uniquely Kentucky identity,Boone said. It will be tailored to meetKentucky Education Reform Act stan-dards, she said.

COSI has set a goal of 125 pro-grams in a school year, Boone said.

COSI will receive $300,000 forstart-up costs of creating the Kentuckyprogram and purchasing equipment.The Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association,the Kentucky Pork Producers Associa-tion and the West Kentucky GrowersCooperative will pay the start-up costs.KAEC will pay COSI $50,000 per yearfor operating costs for the life of thecontract. KAEC is seeking sponsors tounderwrite the annual operating costs.

Participating schools will becharged a fee of $875 for a full one-dayprogram that includes a skit called“Lunch Room Live” and a minimum of10 hands-on work stations.

COSI will begin taking reservationsin February. COSI schedules the mobileprogram a minimum of six months inadvance.

COSI originally was the Center ofScience and Industry when it started 41years ago. It has provided fun learningexperiences for 17 million people sinceits inception.

tion in 1992. Broad Run’s first commer-cial vintage was released in 1994.

In the mid-1990s the Kushnersbought the farm across the road fromtheir home to expand their grape pro-duction. Today they own 72 acres, ofwhich 25 are in grapes.

The Kushners outgrew the wineryin the basement of their house and de-cided to build a 4,000-square-foot win-ery on their property across Broad RunRoad from their home.

A structure being built on top ofthe winery will be used for entertaining.

In the beginning, many people toldthe Kushners that many of the grapesthey were planting couldn’t be grown inKentucky. “I knew from its climate andits history that Kentucky was an idealplace to grow grapes,” Jerry said. “Ithought we could grow the best grapesin the world. And we are.”

The Kushners are proud of the factthat they use Kentucky-grown grapes intheir products. “We’re dedicated to pro-moting the Kentucky wine industry,”Jerry said.

The Kushners buy chardonnay andcabernet grapes from St. Vincent Vine-yards. They also buy strawberries andapples from Kevan Evans ofGeorgetown to make strawberry wineand apple champagne.

Natives of New York City, Jerryand Marilyn Kusher came to Kentuckyin 1954 as Jerry’s work as an engineerfor General Electric brought them toLouisville.

Jerry’s engineering background of-ten comes in handy at the winery. Heformed the metal steps from the enter-tainment center to the wine cellar andconverted milk coolers they boughtfrom dairy farms for wine refrigeration.

The Kentucky Department of Ag-riculture has made changes toits advertising and market de-

velopment cost-share programs tomake it easier for Kentucky horticul-ture producers to get cost-share funds.

Applications for both programshave been improved to be more user-friendly, said Mac Stone, director of theDivision of Value-Added Plant Produc-tion. Producers now may apply for cost-sharing funds through September foreligible expenses incurred at anytimeduring calendar 2005. The new processeliminates the need for applicants to fittheir expenditures into a specific periodof time, or round.

Stone urged applicants to read thenew applications carefully to avoid adelay in processing.

The advertising cost share programprovides a dollar-for-dollar match toassist marketers in advertising and pro-moting the sales of Kentucky-grownhorticulture products. Producers canreceive a cost-share match of up to$4,000 per calendar year. All advertise-ments must contain the “Kentucky

Proud” logo to qualify. The programcan help pay for signs, placemats forrestaurants, radio spots, business cards,flyers, newspaper ads and other items.

The market development programhas been revamped to support the de-velopment and improvement of newand emerging markets for Kentuckyhorticulture products. Market develop-ment cost-share funds now may be ap-plied to trade shows, selectedconferences and targeted marketingmeetings. A trade show visit may befunded for up to $1,500 with the appli-cant providing 25 percent of the totalcost. The program offers dollar-for-dollar matching funds for market devel-opment meetings (up to $1,000) andconferences (up to $750).

Kentucky prepares for soybean rust invasionBy TED SLOANKentucky Agricultural News

Kentucky soybean farmersshould keep up with the latestinformation on soybean rust

and prepare to fight the fungus thatcauses the disease if it is detected inthe Commonwealth next year, Univer-sity of Kentucky researchers and Ken-tucky Department of Agricultureofficials said.

“Soybean rust is right on our door-step,” Agriculture Commissioner RichieFarmer said. “We are fortunate that it isapproaching at a time when Kentucky’ssoybean crop is pretty much all in thebins. Our farmers will have time to getready for it if it overwinters close by orblows into Kentucky next year.”

UK researchers are educatingcounty Extension agents about soybeanrust’s appearance, where it can befound on plants, what conditions it pre-fers and other characteristics, saidJimmy Henning, assistant director foragriculture and natural resources withthe UK College of Agriculture. Everyagent in the state should be brought upto speed by late February, he said. Aseries of meetings will be conductedacross the Commonwealth in Januaryand February to help producers learnmore about soybean rust.

The state Agriculture Department

is exploring adding a soybean rust com-ponent to its education program forpesticide applicators. Continuing edu-cation units would be awarded if thenew component is added.

A national soybean rust monitoringsystem is being established using “senti-nel” soybean plots that will be plantedahead of normal planting time for soy-beans, said DonHershman, a plantpathologist withthe UK College ofAgriculture. Offi-cials, researchersand Extensionagents will bewatching for soy-bean rust discover-ies to the south tochart its progressand gauge whenand where it mightarrive in Kentucky,he said.

“We should have plenty of warningto do what needs to be done at theproper time,” Hershman said.

Between now and spring planting,farmers should review the UK and U.S.Department of Agriculture Web sitesand other sources for soybean rust in-formation. They should consult withtheir county Extension agents to learn

how to recognize the disease and whatfungicides to use if they have to sprayfor soybean rust, Henning andHershman said. They said growersshould make sure they have the properequipment set at the proper calibrationto apply the fungicide and determine inadvance what fungicides are availablefrom their suppliers.

“Farmers needto re-evaluate theirability to apply fun-gicides in a timelymanner,”Hershman said.“They need to beprepared to sprayfungicides whenand if the timecomes.”

Ten fungicidescurrently are la-beled for useagainst soybean

rust under special registrations. TheKentucky Department of Agriculture isauthorized to issue special registrations,and UK typically provides technical as-sistance to develop the data to justify aspecial registration.

Soybean rust was discovered in theUnited States for the first time on Nov.10 in Louisiana. It since has been foundin eight other states, including north-

eastern Arkansas, southeastern Mis-souri and western Tennessee.

The spores that cause soybean rustare believed to have been carried by thehurricane-force winds that swept intothe southeastern United States last sum-mer. The spores can survive a mild win-ter and thrive in warm, moistconditions.

Soybean rust appears as tan orreddish-brown lesions on the under-side of soybean leaves as well as otherparts of the plant, according to USDA’sAnimal and Plant Health InspectionService. It has been known to infectother legumes such as green beans andpinto beans. It can be controlled byusing fungicides but can increase pro-duction costs as much as 25 percent,Hershman said.

A USDA study released earlier thismonth estimated losses due to soybeanrust across all U.S. agricultural produc-ers and consumers at between $240 mil-lion and $2 billion a year after the firstfull year of infestation, depending onthe severity and extent of an outbreak.

RustyFord, manager of the division’s EquinePrograms Branch, received a Distin-guished Service Award.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Halland Mr. Ford for these well-deservedhonors,” Agriculture CommissionerRichie Farmer said. “Everyone in theOffice of the State Veterinarian deservescredit for all they do to keep our animalindustries free of disease and maintaina safe, abundant and affordable foodsupply for Kentucky consumers.”

Dr. Hall was honored for his lead-

ership in developing the KDA’s agricul-tural emergency plan. Ford was recog-nized for his “devoted service to theveterinary profession, the equine indus-try and commodity groups” for his rolein the investigation of Mare Reproduc-tive Loss Syndrome, West Nile Virusmonitoring and other disease controlefforts, according to the KVMA.

The Office of the State Veterinar-ian enforces state and federal regula-tions on interstate livestock movement;maintains animal health records; andsupervises and inspects livestock deal-ers and other animal assembly points. Itadministers programs to control anderadicate equine diseases, brucellosis,pseudorabies, Johne’s and other animaldiseases. Kentucky is free of brucellosisin cattle and pseudorabies in swine. Nothoroughbred stallion standing in Ken-tucky is known to have equine viralarteritis, and Kentucky recorded onlyone case of equine infectious anemia in2003.

The Division of Water has also prepared Guidance Document andApplication Instructions, which walks potential applicants through theentire process of applying for grant funds to help mitigate or preventnonpoint source pollution.. The document is available through a linkfrom the Division of Water Web site.

Projects will compete for funding under the upcoming Section 319(h)Nonpoint Source Pollution Implementation Grant for 2006. These fundsare provided to Kentucky by the EPA. They can be used to pay for up to60 percent of the total cost for each project. A 40 percent nonfederalmatch is required.

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board is offering competi-tive awards programs in agri-tourism and farmers’ markets for 2005.

The 2005 Agri-tourism Competitive Awards Program provides a to-tal of $1 million for agri-tourism businesses and regional agri-tourismmarketing efforts. Applications for the competitive awards will be ac-cepted in two rounds ending Feb. 1 and Aug. 1. Applications will bescored according to a pre-determined, specified criteria, of which highestpoints will be awarded to projects that show viability and have significantimpact on multiple producers.

The 2005 Farmers’ Market Competitive Grants Program offers a totalof $1.5 million for regional and community farmers’ markets across thestate. Of the $1.5 million, $975,000 will be awarded for regional markets,$375,000 will go to community markets, and $150,000 will be earmarkedfor market feasibility studies. Requests for regional markets over $100,000will be required to have a completed feasibility study. Applications forthe competitive grants will be accepted in two rounds ending Jan. 1 andJuly 1.

Kentucky’s cash farm receipts were expected to reach a record level ofnearly $4 billion in 2004 thanks to strong grain and livestock markets, ac-cording to economists with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Exten-sion Service.

Cash receipts are expected to moderate somewhat but still remainstrong in 2005, said Larry Jones, UK Extension agricultural economist.

Jones said livestock prices were strong throughout 2004 while weatherconditions allowed for exceptional growing conditions for grain crops. As aresult, cash receipts for crops increased by 14 percent and livestock receiptsgrew by 13 percent above 2003 levels.

The largest sectors of Kentucky’s farm receipts are equine, followed bypoultry and then cattle, Jones said during the annual Kentucky Agricul-tural Economic Outlook conference held in conjunction with KentuckyFarm Bureau Federation’s annual convention.

Net farm income for 2004 could set an all-time record due to strongcash receipts, low interest rates and government payments.

In the year ahead, corn cash receipts are expected to go down due tomore normal growing conditions and the livestock sector will remainstrong but have somewhat lower prices, Jones said.

Ninety-three percent of Kentucky landowners enrolled in the Purchaseof Agricultural Conservation Easements (PACE) program say the programwill help them keep their property in agriculture, according to a Universityof Kentucky survey.

Of the 82 respondents, 52 percent said they used PACE funds and ben-efits to pay down debt. Other frequent uses include purchasing farmequipment (42 percent), constructing or improving buildings on the farm(39 percent), retaining ownership of property for agriculture (39 percent),and implementing conservation practices (31 percent). Most of the land-owners who responded indicated multiple uses of their funds.

The conservation easements ensure that land currently used for agri-cultural purposes will remain available for agriculture and will not be con-verted to other uses. Donors of conservation easements may receive federaland state income tax and estate tax benefits.

Since its inception in 1994, PACE has purchased agricultural conserva-tion easements on 17,531 acres. Another 3,069 acres of easements have beendonated to the PACE program.

The PACE program, which is administered by the Kentucky Depart-ment of Agriculture, has 585 applications totaling more than 115,000 acrespending.

Kentucky once was among thenational leaders in wine pro-duction before Prohibition led

many in the commonwealth to pull uptheir vines. Several new wineries havepopped up in Kentucky over the lastdecade as entrepreneurs have soughtto take advantage of the state’s soiland climate and cash in on the wine-drinking craze.

Broad Run Vineyards of JeffersonCounty was one of the pioneers of thelatter-day wine movement in Kentucky.Today owners Jerry and MarilynKushner’s wines are available from sev-eral central Kentucky retailers.

The Kushners started making wine20 years ago for their personal con-sumption. They soon decided that theywanted to grow their own grapes andplanted 400 vines, mostly Europeanvarietals and French-American hybrids.Their pastime became “a social thing,”Marilyn said, as friends would visit thefarm to help work the grapevines – andlater would come back to help drink thewine.

“You don’t get customers in a vine-yard. You get friends,” Jerry said.

Kentucky schoolchildren can testtheir writing and artistic skillswhile learning about the im-

portance of agriculture in the Ken-tucky Department of Agriculture’s2005 Poster and Essay Contest.

This year’s theme is “KentuckyFarmland: Preserving Our Past and Pro-tecting Our Future.” Children in grades1-8 are asked to write essays and drawposters based on the theme. Studentswith the best essays and posters in eachgrade will receive $100 savings bondsand will be honored at the KentuckyAgriculture Day luncheon March 24 inFrankfort.

“As consumers become more re-moved from their farming roots, manydo not realize the farmer’s critical contri-butions to our way of life,” AgricultureCommissioner Richie Farmer said. “ThePoster and Essay Contest is a great wayfor children to learn how many ways ag-riculture touches our lives every day.”

Posters and essays must be com-

pletely student-created. Students mayenter both contests. Posters should be incolor and should be drawn on white pa-per, mounted and framed with posterboard, heavy paper or mat board. Post-ers should be no more than 18 inches by24 inches and will not be accepted ifthey are rolled up.

Essays must be no more than 150words for students in grades 1-3 and nomore than 250 words for students ingrades 4-8.

Entries must be postmarked byFeb. 25. Winners will be notified byMarch 11.

Entries will become the property ofthe Kentucky Department of Agricul-ture and will not be returned. Essaysand posters may be used in variousKDA publications and special events.
