It’s hard to believe we are writing our last newsletter article of 2013. The next time you receive a newsletter will be January 13, 2014!

As 2013 comes to an end, we hope you will consider a donation to the Legacy Campaign. An amazing $98,910 has been contributed by 245 generous donors thus far, making our goal of $110,000 definitely within reach! Year-end is the perfect time to make your tax-deductible contribution and we truly can’t think of a more worthy cause than R.J. Reynolds High School and the Legacy Campaign!

Before we break for the holidays, you have an opportunity to attend another Reynolds tradition, the annual Holiday Showcase. Please join us on Wednesday, December 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium to be dazzled by our gifted A Cappella chorus, Jazz Band, ballet class and Dancing Boots! So much talent and fun in one place on one night! Tell your friends…especially those who may be interested in attending Reynolds next year.

Speaking of next year…please also spread the word about Reynolds Revue on Thursday, January 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium, followed by opportunities to meet teachers, coaches and clubs throughout the building after the show. This event showcases the very best of Reynolds to our prospective students and families as we highlight academics, athletics and the arts all in one evening!

Finally, to all our sports teams that will be practicing and playing in various games and tournaments over the holidays, we wish you the best of luck and safe travels. Check out the athletic schedules on the RJR website and come cheer on our Demons over the break! We also congratulate all athletes who participated in fall sports and received all-conference recognition. Check out the list later in this newsletter.

All our faculty, staff, parents and students have been working incredibly hard. Now it is time to take a break and enjoy some time off! We wish everyone a very happy, healthy and blessed holiday season! Lisa and Greg Carter

If you’ve ever walked through the doors of RJR’s guidance office, you surely understand what a bustling place it is. The action never stops! During the months of October, November and December, Student

Services Committee members have been lending a hand there several hours each week. These volunteers have been very helpful manning the phones, directing traffic, handling numerous small projects, and keeping the lid on things when guidance counselors and staff need coverage or are attending meetings. We thank Student Services Committee members Becky Beeson, Abigail Blake, Deborah Casstevens, Sally Corpening, Lisa Dull, Jody Ebbitt, Megan Erickson, Kathleen Ghiorsi Tatter, Jennifer Green, Lynn Gwyn, Lee Hatling, Carla Hoots, Mickey Kangur, Bonnie Murphy, Nancy Osborn, Portia Propst, Shannon Rainey, Lisa Rowell, Kate Ruley, Katie Satterwhite, Jean Anne Semke, Kathryn Spanos, Laura Terry, Joy Troxell, Jennifer Walldorf, Tricia Walls, Dorothy Wattleworth, Robin Woodard and Melissa Workman for sharing their time in this meaningful way. On December 13th, our Hospitality Committee and its dedicated Cooks-on-Call hosted the annual holiday teacher luncheon, and we assure you that RJR’s deserving faculty and staff were treated to a veritable feast! Everyone could sample from multiple crockpots of savory chili, baked potatoes with a wide variety of toppings, delectable pasta, fruit and green salads, heaps of yummy holiday cookies, and plentiful beverages. The Hospitality Committee planned and organized this event, and also handled set-up, seasonal decorations, service, and clean-up. We’re certain no one left hungry, and we thank this team of volunteers for letting our teachers and staff know how very much we appreciate all they do for our students, school and community each and every day! Join us in giving a big round of applause to: Monica Adams, Latisha Alford, Susie Andrus, Laura Angle, Becky Beeson, Margaret Bessette, Abigail Blake, Betsy Bost, Patty Brewer, Jennifer Briggs, Jeanne Brooker, Donna Carr, Lisa Carter, Laura Casey, Maike Copeland, Lisa Dull, Bonnie Flythe, Shunda Gamble, Anne Garvey, Jennifer Green, Deborah Groce, Beth Gunter, Lee Hatling, Ashby Hopkins, Crystal Joyce, Athena Karahalios, Christine Leroy-Lachgar, Karen Lordeman-Rowdy, Alice Mahoney, Jane McKim, Shannon Meinberg, Bonnie Murphy, Merritt Orr, Gayle Parker, Renet Parris, Susan Patterson, Portia Propst, Elizabeth Robinette, Kate Ruley, Kathryn Spanos, Robin Welch, Lee Anne West and Robin Woodard.

Many of these students would benefit from just 45 to 60 minutes a week of one-on-one tutoring.  To be an ESL tutor, you do not need to speak Spanish or Korean or Tagalog.  You just need to speak English and have a little time to give.

Tutoring slots are available each day throughout the day.  Students will arrive at their tutoring sessions with specific assignments to complete or review.  No planning by the tutor is required.

If you are interested in being an ESL tutor or simply want to learn more about the program, please contact Deborah Casstevens ([email protected]) or Kathy McLean ([email protected]).

We are proud to be working with Academic Year in America (AYA) to bring Foreign Exchange Students to our High School. This gives English-speaking students from other countries a chance to see what America is really like in a fantastic experience of one school-year at Reynolds. We are eager to add foreign athletes, scholars and artists to our student body because we know how much it brings to our community and the international students as well. To bring the world to Reynolds we need host families open to adding a student (or even two) to their family for one school year. AYA's program allows your family to have direct input on the type of student you feel would be the best fit for your family and even provides a local coordinator to help make the process smooth and easy. If you are curious about the process or want to chat about what it would take to make it happen, please contact Courtney Fraley at [email protected]

Would you like to be a student ambassador and help prospective students learn about Reynolds? The Magnet School Recruitment time is here! There are opportunities in December and January for current students to tell interested students about our special school.  We need arts and non-arts students, athletes and non-athletes, underclassmen and upperclassmen.  If you are happy at Reynolds and would like to tell others about your experiences, please contact Mrs. Morris to be a student ambassador.

There is a new system that EVERYONE needs to log into and either renew your volunteer status or complete the application. On the WSFCS website, under the “Parent” tab,” Volunteers” should be chosen. The website is self-explanatory about how to proceed. Any questions, contact Amy Colona at [email protected]

College Search is a committee of parent volunteers who work one-on- one with RJR seniors and juniors to help with the college planning process. Typically, a volunteer will work with a  student for 45 minutes during an elective period to help him/her determine next steps (whatever they may be) and to support the fabulous guidance department by doing the more general hand-holding and question answering.  Students leave the appointments with a folder of information, a CFNC account, and an action plan for next steps. We need your help!  If your student is a junior or senior and would benefit from working with a volunteer in this way, please encourage them to sign up for an appointment.  The link is here and is on the RJR website under Student Services:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dEJpNEVCS0VpYXk1OXRjNXU4RE9UMVE6MQ. It is not too late to join this committee! Contact Karen Morris at [email protected] if you would like to help students in this way. Training is provided and it is a great way to learn about the college search process yourself.
