2010-2011 COMMUNITY REPORT

As President of the Winston-Salem Dash, I was

excited to pick up a copy of the Winston-Salem

Journal late last summer and read a favorable

front-page story about the Dash’s first season

in our new home at BB&T Ballpark. A box

titled “Winning Season,” pointed out that the

ballpark itself had been chosen as Best New

Stadium in America; that the Dash had the

highest average attendance in our league; and

that our players, who won the hearts of local

fans this year, led the league in almost every

offensive category while compiling the best

overall win-loss record.

The ultimate satisfaction from our first season

at BB&T Ballpark came when we read a quote

from a fan, who said, “I got my money’s worth

every time I came here. It is hard to say what

has drawn people here, the winning or the

ballpark. So I think it’s a combination.” There

is another quote I like from a season ticket

holder who stopped me at an event and said,

“I know you are proud of your ballpark, but

you should be just as proud of your employees.

They are great. They look after us and make us

all feel like family.”

At the Dash, we believe that our customer

service efforts have just begun when fans buy

tickets and enter BB&T Ballpark. After that,

it becomes the experience. As the fan in the

newspaper indicated, we go the extra mile to

give Dash fans their money’s worth. We know

that when we do, fans will come back, bringing

their friends, family and neighbors with them

to share in the Dash experience.

Every single person on our payroll

understands that he or she is an important

part of our customer service team – the

guys who hawk the dollar bags of peanuts

that everyone can afford and the fellow who

meticulously prepares each cup of the world’s

best homemade lemonade. I’m particularly

proud of Sarah, “Hammer,” “Ben Ten” and

the other enthusiastic young people who

provided between-inning entertainment. I’m

equally proud of the ushers who greeted fans,

memorized their names and had towels close

by when drinks were spilled.

I’m also pleased to report the highly positive

economic impact that the Dash had on the

Winston-Salem community. Our team’s

owners invested $22 million in private funding

toward construction of BB&T Ballpark, which

cost $48.7 million and is owned by the City

of Winston-Salem. Local contractors and

subcontractors were used as much as possible

during construction of the ballpark (nearly

70 percent of the subcontractors were from

Winston-Salem and elsewhere in the Piedmont

Triad, and more than 90 percent were from

North Carolina). Last April, the Dash, along

with our food service subcontractor, created

345 full- and part-time jobs.

On behalf of Winston-Salem Dash players,

coaching staff, management and team owners,

I thank the people of Winston-Salem for their

warm welcome and enthusiastic support during

our inaugural season at BB&T Ballpark. I hope

you find the information in this community

report interesting and informative. We look

forward to seeing you again soon during this

season. Let’s play ball!

WINSTON-SALEM DASH

During our inaugural season at BB&T Ballpark,

the Dash provided support for more than 100

local nonprofit organizations. Following are

brief descriptions of a sampling of the dozens

of events that took place inside BB&T Ballpark

during 2010 in support of nonprofit groups:

Second Harvest Food Bank

Although the teams don’t play each other on the

baseball field, last summer the Dash challenged

our neighboring Greensboro Grasshoppers to a

food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food

Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Together,

the Dash and Grasshoppers collected more

than 9,500 canned food items to help those in

need in 18 counties.

Home Run for Life

On several other occasions during last season,

the Dash executed a heartwarming promotion

called Home Run for Life in conjunction with

Wake Forest Baptist Health to honor children

who have shown exceptional spirit and

strength while battling serious illness. After

the end of the second inning, children, along

with their families and doctors who treated

them, were recognized on the field, received

a standing ovation and were named honorary

players for the day.

Boy Scouts of America

While the Dash was out of town on July

31, BB&T Ballpark hosted hundreds of Boy

Scouts, volunteers and family members to

help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the

Boy Scouts of America’s founding. The event

was the largest scouting party in the history of

the Old Hickory Council, which encompasses

eight counties throughout the area.

Brenner Children’s Hospital

As part of the Dash’s ongoing efforts to give

back to the Winston-Salem community,

the team initiated a commemorative brick

program to benefit Brenner Children’s

Hospital. Fans had the opportunity to

purchase bricks with personalized messages on

them that were laid in the plaza at the main

entrance of BB&T Ballpark.

MVP Program

The Dash MVP Program is an enormously

successful incentive-based learning program for

elementary school children in the area. Eighty

schools from eight counties in the Piedmont

Triad participated in the program, which

rewarded students for reaching specific learning

goals set by their teachers. More than 43,000

students participated in the program.

Partnership with Winston-Salem Police Department & Drug-Free NC

The Dash was particularly enthusiastic about

collaborating with the Winston-Salem Police

Department and “Drug-Free NC.” As part

of this partnership, the team distributed Dash

tickets to underprivileged youth and promoted

the Winston-Salem Police Department’s

“Parent-Kid Challenge.”

The UPS Store – Toys for Tots

On September 8, the Dash partnered

with the UPS Store and the Toys for Tots

Literacy Program to help combat childhood

illiteracy. Donations were collected at the

BB&T Ballpark gates that night to help put

books into the hands of the region’s most

economically disadvantaged children.

Habitat for Humanity

On July 10, the Dash and Lowe’s Companies,

Inc. teamed up with Habitat for Humanity

of Forsyth County to participate in a Habitat

Wall Build. Lowe’s employees, Dash players

and staff, and team mascot Bolt helped pre-

build walls that were used at various Habitat

construction sites.

Honorary Coaches Award

Early in the 2010 season, the team announced

the annual “Winston-Salem Dash Honorary

Coaches Award” to be presented each year

at the beginning of the season to a citizen

of Winston-Salem and its surrounding

communities who has made a lasting impact

on the community through his or her

involvement in athletics. The first award

was awarded to the late Clarence “Big House”

Gaines, head basketball coach at Winston-

Salem State University from 1946-1993.

BB&T Ballpark served as host site to several

other community events during 2010,

including the Winston-Salem Chamber of

Commerce Business After Hours, the Negro

League Stamp Unveiling, Boy and Girl Scout

Sleepovers and special family night movie

showings on the big screen. The Dash also

honored members of the United States

military at a pre-July 4 celebration at the

ballpark on July 2.

The Dash worked with more than 100 community organizations and outreach events during 2010. We would like to thank the following organizations for partnering with the Dash

WINSTON-SALEM DASH

Baseball has a rich history in this community,

dating to several years before “Winston” and

“Salem” became one. As Dan Collins wrote

in the Winston-Salem Journal last summer,

“Baseball fans in Winston-Salem have never had

it so good.” The line was in reference to both

the quality of the team on the field and the

experience that fans had at BB&T Ballpark all

season long.

Opening Day at BB&T Ballpark on April 13

kicked off with a lunchtime pep rally with

Bolt and Dash players and coaches to welcome

the Dash to downtown Winston-Salem. The

opening celebration continued all week long

and culminated on Saturday, April 17, with

“Community Day at BB&T Ballpark,” giving

fans who had not yet had the opportunity to

come to a game a chance to get their first look

at the new stadium.

Throughout the inaugural season, the Dash

played an entertaining and winning brand

of baseball, achieving the best regular season

record in the Carolina League and sending two

2010 team members to the major leagues. The

greater success, however, came off the field and

was felt throughout the community.

The Dash led all 30 Advanced Class-A

minor league teams in average and total

attendance, drawing 312,313 fans to BB&T

Ballpark during the regular season. This

mark broke the previous Winston-Salem

baseball attendance record by nearly 100,000

fans. Downtown Winston-Salem benefitted

from the thousands of people who attended

games throughout the season. More than 40

percent of the team’s season ticket holders

were from outside the city of Winston-Salem,

meaning that a large number of people visited

downtown and were exposed to the different

businesses and attractions. These people

might have otherwise spent their money

somewhere else if not for the Dash.

Both inside and outside the gates of BB&T

Ballpark, the Dash supported more than 100

local nonprofit groups, including Brenner

Children’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and

Boy Scouts. Additional information about our

work with nonprofit groups is shared on pages

four and five of this report.

OUR INAUGURAL SEASON AT BB&T BALLPARK

• Finished 11th out of 62 playoff teams in average attendance (top fifth in all of Minor League Baseball)

• Average attendance at Minor League playoff games was 2,395 – the Dash drew an average crowd of 3,669 during the playoffs

• Of teams that hosted four or more playoff games, the Dash was fifth in average attendance

• Finished 3rd in average attendance among all 42 Single-A or short-season teams that made the playoffs

• When looking at league average attendance, only the AAA Pacific Coast League and the AA Eastern League finished with bigger average crowds than the Dash

Page 7: Winston-Salem Dash 2010-11 Community Report

2010-2011 COMMUNITY REPORT

On the field the Dash finished the regular

season 81-58 – the best record in the Carolina

League and among the top ten in all of minor

league baseball. The team won both the

first and second half Southern Division titles

and made it all the way to the Mills Cup

Championship series before losing to a hot

Potomac team.

Offensively, the Dash was as potent as any

team across minor league baseball. Winston-

Salem hit .288 as a team in 2010, the sixth

best average among the 120 full-season minor

league teams. The Dash finished first in the

Carolina League in runs scored (738), hits

(1,384), home runs (112), slugging percentage

(.435), and on-base percentage (.350).

The Dash held its own in the pitching

department as well, finishing in the top half

of the league in fewest runs allowed (640)

while giving up the fewest number of home

runs (64). Two pitchers (Chris Sale, Gregory

Infante) began their seasons with the Dash and

finished 2010 pitching in the major leagues for

the Chicago White Sox.

The success of the team led to many

individuals being recognized for their

outstanding performances throughout the

season. The Dash led the league in mid-season

and post-season All-Stars. A Winston-Salem

and Carolina League record seven players were

named to the mid-season Carolina League All-

Star team (Eduardo Escobar, Jon Gilmore,

WINSTON-SALEM DASH

Does reading about the 2010 season make you

thirsty for more? The Dash opened Winston-

Salem’s 67th season of professional baseball on

April 8 with an away game at Kinston. The

Dash returned to BB&T Ballpark for the first

home stand with an opening game against

Kinston on April 15 at 7 p.m.

Fourth of July fireworks, Thirsty Thursdays,

and summer-long entertainment highlight

the promotional schedule for the 2011 season

of Winston-Salem Dash baseball at BB&T

Ballpark. Fireworks will follow every Friday

home game.

The 2011 season at BB&T Ballpark promises

to be another exciting one for the Dash and

the entire Winston-Salem community. The

Dash is bringing back all of our fans’ favorite

things from last season and making plenty

of additions to improve the fan experience at

BB&T Ballpark in 2011.

The Best in Entertainment

In addition to an even better Dash Pack, we

are bringing back all the favorite games and

skits from 2010 and adding a few more that

are sure to become crowd-pleasers. The best

fireworks show in town will follow every

Friday home game and kids can run the bases

after every weekend game.

Extra Fun

On two special nights this season,

BB&T Ballpark will host a pair of special

entertainment acts for fans to enjoy while they

cheer on the Dash. On May 21, BirdZerk!

will treat fans to a night of quirky fun while

on August 27, the Zooperstars! will make their

return to Winston-Salem.

Friends & Family Nights

The Dash’s most popular ticket promotion is

back for 2011 with Friends & Family Night.

For less than $30, fans that purchase this

package will get four tickets to a game, four

Dash baseball hats, and food for the whole

family. These nights sold out quickly in 2010,

so fans should check www.wsdash.com for

updates about when the next Friends & Family

Night will be.

WHAT’S IN STORE THIS SEASON?

2010-2011 COMMUNITY REPORT

New Outfield Bar

The Dash is excited to introduce a new

section of BB&T Ballpark for fans to enjoy in

2011. The team will open an outfield bar just

beyond the left field wall. This section, which

will be free for all fans to visit, will be the

centerpiece for the Dash’s new and improved

Thirsty Thursdays promotion this season.

New Hanes Team Store

This season, the Dash will expand upon its

current team store with a new building that

will be stationed next to the box office at

BB&T Ballpark. This new store will be larger

than the 2010 store and will be stocked with

plenty of new types of merchandise for fans

to purchase.

Expanded Clubhouse

This offseason, the Dash expanded the

clubhouse area used by the visiting team

in 2010. This ballpark improvement was

completed to increase Winston-Salem’s

chances of drawing other events to BB&T

Ballpark in the future. Possible future

events include ACC and NCAA baseball

tournaments as well as concerts. These

investments (clubhouse, team store, outfield

bar) of private money into a publicly owned

facility represent the Dash’s commitment to

keeping BB&T Ballpark a state-of-the-art

entertainment facility.

Bolt’s Kids Club

Dash fans 12 and under can join “Bolt’s Kids

Club.” For $20, members receive admission

to 2011 Sunday home games, a Bolt’s Kids

Club lanyard, a 10% discount on regularly-

priced merchandise on Sundays, a free day

in the Childress Institute Kids Zone, a Dash

cap, an autograph session with select players,

and ballpark birthday party specials.

Heritage Weekend

The Dash will salute the Winston-Salem

community and its baseball history through

a special weekend of events from August 5-7

at BB&T Ballpark. Details of the event

schedule will be made available at a later date

at www.wsdash.com.

Faith & Family Days

The Dash listened to fans who could not

make it to the ballpark on Sunday afternoons

because of morning commitments and the

stifling Sunday heat. Beginning on June 12,

Sunday home games will begin at 5 PM to

avoid the heat of the day. The Dash is working

with churches and other organizations to bring

groups to BB&T Ballpark to wind down their

weekends at a ballgame.

Local Artists

The Dash will pay tribute to the City of Arts

& Innovation with a special ceremony as

part of the installation of a baseball mural at

BB&T Ballpark.

WINSTON-SALEM DASH

INTRODUCING OUR 2011 COACHING STAFF

Julio Vinas Manager

Longtime White Sox minor leaguer Julio Vinas

will make his managerial debut for the Winston-

Salem Dash this season. Vinas rejoins the White

Sox organization after spending seven seasons as

a player in the Chicago system. The 38-year-old

was originally selected by Chicago in the 33rd

round of the 1991 draft and stayed with the

organization through the 1997 season.

In 11 minor league seasons as a player, Vinas

hit .264 with 84 home runs and 504 runs

batted in. Primarily a catcher, Vinas also

spent significant time playing first base. After

his playing career ended, Vinas coached

for ten years in the Orioles minor league

system, spending the last six seasons as the

organization’s hitting coordinator.

Robert Sasser Hitting Coach

Robert Sasser rejoins the Dash for his third

season as the team’s hitting coach and his sixth

with the White Sox organization. Under his

instruction in 2010, the Dash boasted the most

prolific offense in the Carolina League and one

of the finest in all of minor league baseball.

Winston-Salem led the league in batting

average (.288), runs (738), home runs (112),

hits (1,384), on-base percentage (.350), and

slugging percentage (.435). Three Dash players

hit for .300 or higher while several others

ranked highly in nearly every other major

offensive statistical category.

Sasser, 36, began the 2006 season on the roster

for the Class-AA Birmingham Barons before

retiring to become a hitting coach that season.

He played 13 years in the minor leagues,

hitting .258 with 98 home runs and 543 RBI.

He appeared in one major league game with

the Texas Rangers as a pinch hitter on July 31,

1998 against the White Sox. He went 0 for 1

in his only big league plate appearance.

Bobby Thigpen Pitching Coach

Bobby Thigpen returns for his third season as

Winston-Salem’s pitching coach and his fifth

as a coach in the White Sox organization. In

the last two seasons, three of Thigpen’s former

pitchers have reached the major leagues: Daniel

Hudson, Chris Sale, and Gregory Infante.

A former fourth-round draft pick by the White

Sox in 1985, Thigpen pitched nine major league

seasons, including eight with Chicago. He

posted a career record of 31-36 with a 3.43 ERA

and holds the White Sox career saves record with

201. He set a major league record for saves in

one season with 57 in 1990, a mark that stood

until Francisco Rodriguez saved 62 games in

2008. Thigpen, 47, was an All-Star in 1990 and

won the Rolaids Relief Man Award that season;

he also finished fourth in Cy Young voting and

fifth in the voting for Most Valuable Player.

Cory Barton Athletic Trainer

Cory Barton, 34, is in his first season as the

Dash’s head trainer and his seventh with the

White Sox. He spent the last six seasons as the

trainer at Advanced Rookie Bristol. In 2007,

he was named the Appalachian League Athletic

Trainer of the Year. Prior to joining the White

Sox organization, Barton spent six years as a

trainer for Blairsville Central and Northern

Bedford High Schools in Pennsylvania. He

is a certified member of the National Athletic

Trainer’s Association and is a certified instructor

for the American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED.

Adam Tischler Conditioning Coach

Adam Tischler, 29, begins his seventh season in

the White Sox organization and his fourth in

Winston-Salem. Prior to joining the Dash, he

spent the 2007 season in the same capacity for

Class-AA Birmingham and the 2006 season for

Class-A Kannapolis. Tischler began his White

Sox career with Great Falls in 2005 and is a 2003

graduate of Ithaca College. He is a certified

Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the

National Strength and Conditioning Association

and is also a certified Kettelbells Instructor.

The Dash Pack is a group of high school and

college-aged performers whose only job is to

make sure fans have fun when they come to

a game at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash wants

to make sure fans are entertained even when

the inning is over. The Dash Pack uses an

inventory of more than 180 different skits,

games, and dances to keep things fresh for fans

and live up to the Dash’s pledge to provide

quality family entertainment.

Sarah Barnhardt

Sarah returns for her second season as the

Dash’s on-field hostess for all 70 home games

in the 2011 season. Sarah leads the Dash Pack’s

skits, games, and dances on game day. She is

a Winston-Salem native and a 2008 graduate

of Salem College. When she’s not at BB&T

Ballpark, Sarah can be found performing stand-

up comedy around town.

Bolt

Bolt kept fans laughing all season long last year

with his between-innings skits, his ATV rides

around the warning track, and his iconic “belly-

throughout the community at civic events,

schools, and other happenings during 2010

and will be back for the 2011 season with more

belly-jiggles than ever!

EVEN BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE

Preparing players for the next level. Winning

games. Receiving awards. Sure, those things

are incredibly important to us at the Dash.

The most gratifying part of our work, however,

is serving fans. Whether it’s the sales team

accommodating a special ticket need, a parking

attendant greeting a guest with a smile or the

food service team making sure the lemonade is

ice cold, the Dash culture is squarely focused

on one thing: customer service.

The phrase “unsurpassed customer service” is

a buzz phrase among many companies. We

know that, and we applaud the efforts of our

colleagues. At the Winston-Salem Dash, we

take “unsurpassed customer service” to a whole

new level. Don’t just take our word for it.

Listen to what some of our fans said last season:

“I have never been to a public event where the

staff was uniformly as courteous and pleasant.”

“The lovely woman at the ‘will call’ window,

the suite staff and every individual along the

concourse route on the main and suite levels

wished us a great time, provided directions,

smiled and offered help and upon exiting, wished

us a nice evening or safe travels.”

“Those who are involved with hiring the Dash

staff did an outstanding job….The greetings

[given] as we arrive and leave the ballpark just

make our day and make coming to the games a

real pleasure.”

Thank you to the many Dash fans who shared

comments like these last season. But we’re not

satisfied yet.

Earlier this year, we launched an effort to

take customer service to an even higher

level by learning from the best: Disney.

Representatives from the Disney Institute,

the global professional training arm of The

Walt Disney Company, came to Winston-

Salem and provided intense customer service

training to Dash employees. Although the

Disney Institute had worked with a number

of professional sports teams and venues, the

Dash was the first Minor League Baseball team

in America to learn Disney’s heralded best

practices to improve customer service.

When you visit BB&T Ballpark during 2011,

we hope you recognize the customer service

improvements that we learned from the Disney

Institute. We want to hear from you. If you

have a customer service concern at any time,

please let a Dash staff member on-premise

at BB&T Ballpark know or contact Geoff

Lassiter, President of the Winston-Salem Dash,

at [email protected].
