Winnwood Elementary School Where every child is an honored Leader! November/December 2019 Dear Winnwood families, Watching our student leaders continue to develop their skills and share their learning as they stepped in to new leadership jobs over the past two months has been exciting. Our goal is for every student leader to have a job. We started the process at the be- ginning of the school year by asking students what kinds of things they wanted to work on; where they wanted to make difference at school. Of course their ideas reach far beyond the walls of Winnwood. Already this year our community service group has col- lected numerous donations to make fun kits for kids who are in the hospital and launched a pop tab collection to benefit Ronald McDonald House. Our student ambassadors are working on new ways to welcome new students and families. Our fund raising team is preparing to open the school store and our new broadcast team is doing morning announcements. There are 15 different leadership groups. I encourage you to ask your student leader about their leadership role at school. At the beginning of December our 2nd graders completed swimming instructions at the YMCA. We were so grateful for the oppor- tunity for our students to learn basic swimming and water safety. The children had the best time and learned so much. Huge thanks to our friends at the North Kansas City YMCA for providing this opportunity for our students! Unfortunately with the beauty of winter we also get cold and flu season and missing school may be something that you cannot avoid. Scheduling appointments outside of school hours and arriving on time every day will help keep your child’s attendance at a satisfactory level even after illness hits. This keeps children from missing out on important learning time and maximizes their op- portunities to be part of their school community. We appreciate your diligence in stressing the importance of good school attend- ance with your children. Thank you for an amazing 2019 at Winnwood. On behalf of our staff, it is our joy to be part of your child’s education and we look forward to an incredible 2020! Have an amazing break with your families! Dear Winnwood families,

Watching our student leaders continue to develop their skills and share their learning as they stepped in to new leadership jobs over the past two months has been exciting. Our goal is for every student leader to have a job. We started the process at the be-ginning of the school year by asking students what kinds of things they wanted to work on; where they wanted to make difference at school. Of course their ideas reach far beyond the walls of Winnwood. Already this year our community service group has col-lected numerous donations to make fun kits for kids who are in the hospital and launched a pop tab collection to benefit Ronald McDonald House. Our student ambassadors are working on new ways to welcome new students and families. Our fund raising team is preparing to open the school store and our new broadcast team is doing morning announcements. There are 15 different leadership groups. Congratulations Dr. Copeland!

Dr. Copeland has been selected as the Distinguished Principal honoree for the Clay-Platte region of the

MAESP for the 2019-2020 school year! MAESP is the Missouri Association of Elementary School Princi-

pals. There are 11 MAESP regions in the state of Missouri. So, that means that Dr. Copeland and 10 other

honorees (one from each region) will be honored at the MAESP annual conference. One of these 11 Mis-

souri Distinguished Principal honorees will be chosen as Missouri’s NAESP National Distinguished Princi-

pal, representing the state of MO. This awardee will be honored in Washington DC by the US Department

of Education later in 2020. We recently held an assembly to show Dr. Copeland just how happy we are for

her. Congratulations!

We are proud of you!
