4 WINNING HOMES VICTORIA 2016
The Master Builders Excellence in Housing Awards o ers us an annual opportunity to shine the spotlight on a
handful of extraordinary residential projects that, in the eyes of our judges, clamour for attention and recognition.
Our judges have the privilege of visiting these homes in person, and of appreciating what no photographer could
possibly capture. And thank goodness for that.
The residential projects featured tonight have been built for their clients, not us. That is as it should be. This means
the Excellence in Housing Awards is as much about what those of us in the audience can’t see, as what we can—like
the smoothness of a surface, the solitude of an interior, the transition from one room to the next.
I said last year that we like to think no building talent escapes our o cial attention, and given the healthy number
of submissions to our awards program this year, our members have done a commendable job of helping that be
the truth.
The pages that follow demonstrate the diversity of dwellings these Master Builders have contributed to Victoria’s
residential communities. They range from innovative renovations and additions to high-end, contemporary
apartments and everything imaginable in-between.
This year, we name Capelcon as Master Builder of the Year for their execution of a home in Flinders with sweeping
arms of sandstone. The structure is confi dent, muscular and elegant and makes the living areas the focal point of
activity.
Also, Hedger Constructions P/L has won the Regional Builder of the Year award for a Marysville pavilion home that
resonates with the foothills that surround it, and with intimate spaces that are expansive in their solitude. And we
commend David Moyle of Ballarat Construction Management on being named Young Builder of the Year.
Master Builders could not fully recognise the achievements of our members without experienced and highly qualifi ed
judges, who appear on the pages immediately following. We thank them for donating considerable time to the
process, and for allowing us to benefi t from their expertise. Master Builders also enjoys the support of many valuable
sponsors; without their help we would not be able to celebrate the winners in such fi ne style. We thank them for
their ongoing support of excellence in the building and construction industry.
