RHYTHMIC ART GYMNASTICS AND MARIA PETROVA

Art gymnastics is a display of physical exercises and movements performed to music. Gymnasts use their bodies and different objects to express themselves. It is one of the most popular sports for Bulgarian girls and women. The first competition took place in 1922, in Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria. It was a huge success and turned sport into an art. Nowadays, young gymnasts from all over Bulgaria train very hard to enter the national team. Most of them start their training at the age of five. They work hard to achieve a perfect performance and eat very healthy food to keep their bodies in good shape. As a gymnast gets older, the exercises become more difficult. From using a ball and a rope, the girls start using new equipment like the famous hoop. The hoop, which is a colourful plastic ring, was first included in the First World Championship in Budapest, in 1963. It can be thrown into the air or passed under the gymnast’s leg.

In Bulgaria, it is every gymnast’s dream to represent their country in the national team. There are about twenty-five art gymnastic clubs and a lot of strong competition between their young members. Everybody from these sports schools can take part in examinations for the national team. Those who are chosen, continue their training in the “Gerena Sports Complex” in the city of Sofia.

A male student from a senior high school in Sofia was injured while participating in an annual school sponsored downhill ski trip. A group of students from the school travelled to Borovets Ski Resort last Wednesday, 18th January, for a day of ski instruction. Ivan Dobrev, a 15-year-old student, suffered injuries when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

At the time of the accident, Ivan was taking part in a beginners learn-to-ski programme with eight other students. The experienced instructor, who was a former professional skier, had just finished the lesson with the skiers and was allowing them to go a short distance one behind the other with him. Witnesses say that Ivan waited for the rest of the group to go ahead and deliberately headed down the hill by himself. By the time the instructor realized what had happened, Ivan had lost control and crashed into a tree. The instructor told the other skiers to take off their skis and wait at the side of the hill to prevent any other accidents. He immediately contacted the ski patrol for help and waited with Ivan.

Within minutes the ski patrol arrived and determined that Ivan had broken his left leg. They carefully took him down the ski hill to a waiting ambulance. Ivan was taken to the nearest hospital which was two hours away. He was treated and released that evening. The doctor said that it would take Ivan about six weeks to fully recover. The incident was called an accident and neither the instructor nor the ski resort was held responsible, as Ivan did not do what his instructor told him to do.

The Water Crisis

Water makes up around 70% of our bodies and 71% of the earth’s surface. We all need 6-7 glasses of water a day to stay healthy, and could not survive without any water for more than 3-4 days. But water is not only used for drinking. Cleaning our bodies and our surroundings with water is essential to stop the spread of diseases. Also, 70% of the water used in the world is used for agriculture. A 2006 UN report claimed that there is enough water for everyone in the world. However, the fact remains that currently two-fifths of the world’s people are not getting enough.

90% of the severe water shortages in the world are in developing countries. Some water shortages are due to these countries getting very little rain. However, this is not always the case. For example, Japan and Cambodia (a developing country in Asia) have the same amount of rainfall, about 160cm per year. However, whereas the average Japanese person can use 400 liters of water per day, the average Cambodian can only use 40 liters. The problem is mismanagement. Some richer sections of society use too much water for agriculture and industry and do not leave enough water for poorer people to drink, cook and clean.

With the world population due to increase by another 2.5 billion by 2050, the problem of water shortages could get worse and could affect more countries around the world. Some countries are starting to introduce ways to avoid water shortages.

Page 19: Winners for Bulgaria for the 7th Grade Extra End-Of-year Tests

For example, many countries have begun charging people for their water. Some countries, especially in the Middle East, have built factories to take the salt out of ocean water to make it drinkable.

Unlike fossil fuels like oil and coal, water is not running out. However, every day there are more of us to share it. We can all make a difference in our own homes to not waste water. Generally, however, it is up to governments around the world to make sure that enough water is available to all people, both rich and poor.

1. Humans cannot survive with less than 6-7 glasses of water a day. .........2. Around the world, water is mostly used for drinking. .........3. The writer believes that a UN report has given incorrect information. .........4. Water shortages in developing countries are sometimes caused by their climates. .........5. Both Japan and Cambodia suffer from water shortages. .........6. The problem with water in Cambodia is due to misuse. .........7. In 2050, 2.5 billion people will suffer from water shortages. .........8. People all over the world pay for the water they use. .........9. Middle Eastern countries are using a way to supply water that does not rely on rainfall. .........10. The writer believes that politicians have a responsibility to do something to stop water shortages. .........

Part TwoReading Comprehension

Read the text below and the questions that follow it and then circle the letter of the correct answer – A, B, C or D.

Parkour is an activity that involves moving from one place to another as quickly and as easily as possible. It originated from a system of physical education taught by Georges Hebert, a naval officer, who made obstacle courses for the French army before World War 1. In the late 1990s, another Frenchman, David Belle, read about Hebert. He used Hebert’s techniques, as well as techniques he had learned from gymnastics and martial arts, to create Parkour. Belle started teaching Parkour to young people in the Paris suburbs. It soon became popular throughout France and television documentaries spread Parkour’s message worldwide. Also, Belle, once a fireman, became an actor in action films.

In Parkour students learn how to escape from difficult situations and reach a place of safety. Parkour techniques include different ways to jump, land, climb and balance, to avoid and overcome obstacles, from rails and walls to benches and rocks. Parkour can be practiced by anyone, anytime, anywhere; although it is most often practiced in urban areas such as city parks, playgrounds and abandoned buildings. No equipment is needed, although most students prefer to wear light casual clothing with comfortable athletic shoes and fingerless gloves.

Parkour is not an extreme sport or a performance art; it does not have any rules or competitions. Also, Parkour is not a martial art because it does not teach any form of fighting. Some people claim that Parkour is a way of life centred on non-violence and physical exercise. Indeed, Belle claims that Parkour develops both the body and the mind; if you learn how to overcome physical obstacles, you will also

learn how to overcome obstacles in your daily life, like issues at work or difficulties in your relationships.

In recent years, Freerunning has become more popular than Parkour in the English speaking world. Whereas Parkour focuses on the easiest and the safest way to overcome an obstacle, Freerunning focuses on the most impressive way. It is a performance art that concentrates on amazing displays of athleticism. Regardless, both Parkour and Freerunning have given many people around the world a great deal of enjoyment and exercise, and a new way of looking at their everyday surroundings. For students of Parkour and Freerunning, the whole world becomes a playground.

Test One

Receptionist: Good afternoon, Shanghai Duck Chinese restaurant. How can I help you?Mary: Hello. My name is Mary Smith. I’d like to reserve a table at your restaurant for tonight. Could I ask you some questions first? Receptionist: Certainly. What would you like to know?Mary: Well, my husband loves Chinese food, but not everyone in my family does. You see, my parents are quite traditional, so I was wondering if you serve anything more ordinary. Receptionist: I understand. Yes, we serve western dishes. For example, we serve beef and chicken with vegetables and potatoes. Mary: That would be perfect for them. Also, my daughter, Jane, is a vegetarian. I’m not sure if she will come because she has a basketball match tonight, but if she does, is there anything on the menu that she could eat?Receptionist: Does she eat fish?Mary: Yes, she does, and dairy products. Receptionist: We have a wide variety of seafood, so I don’t think there will be a problem.Mary: Great. Now, one more thing; it’s my husband’s birthday and the last time we had a party for him was when he turned fifty, so we want to make this one special. We were thinking of bringing a birthday cake to your restaurant and eating it after we finish our meal. Is that OK?Receptionist: No problem. Give us the cake in its box when you arrive and we will serve it on plates. We have candles here, too, so you don’t need to bring your own. Mary: Fifty-five of them!? I’m just joking. That’s very kind of you. So, we need a table for five please, at around 7 or 8.Receptionist: OK, let me check for one moment. The best we can do is half past eight. Is that OK?Mary: That would be fine. Receptionist: And your name again, please?Mary: Smith. Mary Smith. Oh, and another thing, is there a parking lot outside the restaurant? Receptionist: I’m afraid not. We are in Main Street, so it’s forbidden to park right outside. We advise our customers to use the supermarket car park at the top of Main Street and walk down. It’s only a two minute walk.Mary: I see. Thanks for all your help.Receptionist: My pleasure. See you this evening.

A glass of beer, perhaps?Alfred: Well, we ordered some wine before but … forget about it; water will be fine. Waiter: Once again, I apologise. Perhaps the manager will reduce your bill for your trouble. Alfred: Actually, I think we shouldn’t have to pay at all. Your restaurant is only half full at the moment and if you continue like this, you’ll get even fewer customers. Send the manager over, please; I’d like to have a word with him.

Test Five

Mel: Good afternoon. My name’s Mel Smith and you’re listening to the Film Show on Today FM 104.9. It’s just past two o’clock and in the studio today we are delighted to welcome film maker Ricky Merchant. Ricky stars in ‘This Side of Truth’ which opens in cinemas around the country today. Ricky, thanks for coming in.Ricky: Pleasure to be here, Mel. Mel: Let me start by asking you about the rumour on everybody’s lips these days. Is it true that wedding bells are on the horizon?Ricky: I’m not saying a word Mel. The tabloid newspapers can come up with whatever stories they like about me. Last week I read that I have plans to enter politics and run for election as the next president. It was news to me!Mel: I see. So, let’s move on to the movie. Is this the first film that you’ve starred in that you haven’t written and directed also?Ricky: Yes, that’s right. I’m a film maker that likes total creative control. Of course, some people call this arrogance, but I don’t mind. I’ve always preferred films that show one person’s vision as much as possible. Mel: And what was it like working under Karl Stephens?Ricky: It was wonderful. Firstly, it was far less stressful! All I had to worry about was learning my lines. Secondly, it was a great learning experience. Karl has some great ideas about directing that I think I’ll steal when making my next movie!Mel: So, what’s ‘This Side of Truth’ about?Ricky: It’s basically a fantasy film set in a world where nobody has ever lied. Nobody even knows that lying exists! But I play a man who discovers lying. As you can imagine there are some very funny moments. Suzanne Jones’ script is wonderful. Mel: And what’s next for Ricky Merchant? Are you working on any projects at the moment?Ricky: I’m taking a break at the moment Mel … although I’ve started working on my presidential acceptance speech, of course! Mel: Haha! Thanks for joining us Ricky. I’m sure the film will be a great success.
