WESTLIGHTSTUDIO MUNGE
Located in the heart of fashionable Williamsburg, Westlight is the 22nd-floor rooftop bar of a trendy newly built hotel
featuring sweeping views of New York City. Catering to international travelers and local urbanites, Westlight’s glowing
interiors celebrates the spectacular open vistas over Manhattan while inviting the guest to relax and enjoy each other’s
company in a modernized industrial décor.
The design is respectful of the past through materiality and craftsmanship yet proactive in shaping the future of Brooklyn
through thought-provoking form and function, this rooftop bar is a bold yet graceful design statement. It challenges stereotypes
and successfully represents a new generation of thinking.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
‘This bar is ultra-cool. The past meets the future in a sophisticated reality. Its intelligently layered decadence maximizes the breath taking city views
and incorporates industrial chic in a warm and familiar way.’

THE WAITING ROOM, CROWN TOWNER PERTHBATES SMART
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Elegant and distinct to Perth, we loved how the interiors flowed and evoked the rich colours of Western Australia’s natural landscape
with an extraordinary warmth and romance. Inspired dappled lighting effects and come-hither furniture along with high-end
fittings that exemplify artisanal craftsmanship. I especially loved those showstopping bespoke pastel-toned chandeliers made from
delicate metal chains: pure wow.
PAINE SI VIN (BREAD & WINE)CORVIN CRISTIAN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Paine Si Vin captures a lightness of being through the use of a simple, and pure material palette. Light plays so elegantly
off of the bar’s triple height space and arcade of creamy shades. Fresh and warm, it gives the impression that you’re
enveloped in white chocolate.
EL MAMA Y LA PAPA RESTAURANT AND COCKTAIL BAR EL EQUIPO CREATIVO
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A colourful blending of Catalonian and Brazilian aesthetics, edited in an expert manner to create a refined and stylish space that works well at any time of day and which offers
a wide range of seating options to suit all moods. The use of layering creates an array of stages for social activity adding
further dynamism to the venue.
M&G CAFE AND BAR, THE GOLD STAR COAST
LUCHETTI KRELLE
JUDGES’ COMMENTSSet within a resort complex, this Parisian inspired café
is elegant contemporary interpretation. On one level the design is complex, on another the design details and palette
of materials are understated and there is a clear design rhythm and language. Very sophisticated.
D-FORCEREPUBLIC METROPOLIS ARCHITECTURE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This space takes it cue (excuse the pun) from the game of pool. It is an expression of the different stages of the game; from the static arrangement of the balls in a triangle at the start of the game to the speed of the ball as it bounces off the cushions,
theses dynamics are expressed through the use of angles, reflective materials and rhomboid forms. It is rare to find a space where the
narrative is so clear.
BON BON BARSPIK STUDIOS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
What fun and what a fantastic use of colour! To me, this recalled the cheekiness, decadence and nostalgia of a jar full of sugar-dusted strawberry bonbons. This is a theatre for the senses, throwing ‘60s Pop culture together with
Verner Panton, Art Deco lushness and an ode to Roald Dahl. It is exactly the sort of space I want to find myself in on a
Saturday night.
WINNERCAFÉS
MOBY 3143GOLDEN
Previously a local institution, GOLDEN set out to reinvent the space to invite the locals to reconnect. The client’s brief was to create a new “destination” in Armadale that featured a warm,
inviting and friendly interior. The overall floor plan was designed to utilise the masses of external space and making sure it
contributed to an all- year-round dining experience.
Drawing inspiration from the existing architecture, a 70s Tuscan vibe was created using dusty ochre rendered walls and ceilings and bold colour- blocking. The exterior was painted in
a contemporary warm grey to rebrand the existing building and create a new fresh identity.
8
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This project is a beautiful balance of detail precision with a restrained confidence that doesn’t shout too loud or try too hard. The white metalwork against rich blue with glowing dusky pink
walls creates a rich but relaxed café ambience.

HIGHER GROUNDDESIGN OFFICE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The vertical use of space creates such interest and intimacy in what would otherwise feel like a very stark building. The use of planting and colour blocking against a sea of both tactile and robust materials are a joy to look at. The use
of light, shadows and such beautifully orchestrated zoning builds interest and sophistication throughout the space.
THE PENNY DROPGOLDEN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The forms within this space create such impact. The sweeping curves and strong lines marry together for a sense of depth and
intimacy, whilst maintaining the visual connections across the space. The same care and attention is demonstrated in the bathrooms where perfect symmetry is the star. The subtle use of copper to
reflect the ‘penny’, compliments rather than overpowers the other carefully chosen material palette.
KING GEORGE CAFEKING GEORGE MAD CREATIVE AGENCY
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
It’s good to see a good dose of looseness and joy. This really feels like a place I’d like to hang out.
‘They’ve mixed the material palette very well, and the signage is brilliant.
BAOBAOLINEHOUSE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I really love the way the inside connects with the outside – just beautiful.
I really like the concept of this. There’s a great attention to detail in the outdoor ceiling panels; the iconography shows
the level of interest and research by the designers.
BAOISMLINEHOUSE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Linehouse are brilliant at creating a really striking concept without ever descending into the realm of the ’theme
café’. In this case the traditional woven steamer basket is interpreted in perforated sheet metal to create a simple,
no-frills cafe, that despite the pared back palette has really strong character.
MIDDLETOWN CAFESTUDIO TATE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A great concept for a challenging brief. Love the colour and material pallet as well as the circle and square motifs
throughout. Definitely a place worth visiting.
WINNERHOTELS
JACKALOPECARR
Representing brave and experiential architecture and interiors, the April 2017 launch of Jackalope sparks curiosity
in an adventurous and edgy celebration of alchemy and transformation. Designed to meet the brief for an otherworldly
experience rich with narrative and imagination, guests are transported away from the everyday with a fusion of art, design,
dining and storytelling.
Part object, part installation, part art, part theatre, Jackalope immerses guests in a journey that will delight and surprise.
Spaces guide guests through a narrative of wonder combining an ethereal aesthetic with eclectic additions including a
spectacular 7 metre high Jackalope sculpture by local artist Emily Floyd, on entry to the hotel.
10
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Intense choreography of space: creatively curated architecture, art in form and storytelling. Bold. Daring. Inspirational.
It succeeds on many levels. Often interiors reference design ideas throughout a building but here each space has its own identity
offering a surprise at every turn but hanging together as a collection nevertheless.

HOTEL PULLMAN KAIFENG JIANYELTW DESIGNWORKS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Rich in details, and one of the most inspiring and compelling reception areas seen in recent memory. If
the entire project were judged on one image alone, the reception makes this a standout.
BELMOND ANDEAN EXPLORERMUZA LAB
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I love this very new look for Belmond that feels contemporary Peruano while still luxe. Some very nice details like the keys and inset panels in the lounge car.
HOTEL JEN BEIJING STICKMAN TRIBE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Modern, bright and restrained interiors with nods to North European and mid-century design. The suites have window seats to die for, from which guests can enjoy unbroken views across the city. The restaurant features beautiful and delicate fret-cut
screens to divide the spaces along with a clever range of seating varieties for diners to choose from. The lobby features inventive
oversized arches and offers comfortable waiting areas that break up the large and bustling space.
THE WILLIAM VALESTUDIO MUNGE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The challenging, overtly geometric building architecture has been tamed and enhanced through interiors equal in geometry
and high in class. Fixtures and fittings are ‘Post-Pop’ in style, custom furniture is clever and exciting, art bursts with colour
and wit, and the food and beverage outlets exude invention and sophistication. I believe this to be a property that will still look
astonishing and relevant in 15 years’ time.
NH COLLECTION GRAND HOTEL KRASNAPOLSKYSTUDIO PROOF
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Spanish design, Dutch heritage — the hotel manages to feel utterly contemporary while conjuring a timeless grandeur, which
can be so hard to carry off. It’s a joy to see such a sensitive restoration of Amsterdam’s oldest restaurant building which
preserves original qualities such as 19th-century frescoes while introducing a fresh, sophisticated new feel — this earned all the
judges’ appreciation.
AT SIX STOCKHOLMUNIVERSAL DESIGN STUDIO
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Housed within the 1970’s brutalist former bank HQ the design of the interior has successfully blended the buildings brutalist
past with is a strong sense of contemporary luxury. This is particularly successful in the Listening Lounge and the hotel bedrooms; here the spaces are warm and restful but pared
back and unfussy. The interior also successfully references past and place through the use of well selected contemporary classic
furniture, materials and colour.
WINNERRESTAURANTS
CAMPO MODERN GRILLBUCK.STUDIO
The premises, transparent due to two fully glazed windows, has been divided into two zones. Back of the house with
kitchen, toilets and cloakroom is closed in wood covered cube which from the front opens to the dining room as an almost
14-meters-long shelf. Well visible to customers, the shelf symbolizes openness and homely atmosphere. It acts as the bar where the wine is stored, drinks prepared and bread cut. It also connects visually the dining room with a kitchen thanks to the
large kitchen window.
The whole project is characterized by great attention to detail – visible in furniture finishing and selection of the equipment of which the majority was custom designed and made using materials such as wood, brass and leather emphasizing the
cohesion and honesty of the whole concept.
12
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This project has a confident swagger, with a careful handful of ideas executed exceptionally well.
This striking interior stood out amongst competitors for its strong and distinct visual style. The bold use of such a dark palette is inspired as it focuses the eye on the materially and textures. This attention to detail flowing into the environmental graphics and branded collateral keeps a
consistent dialogue for the customers which isn’t always considered with such high priority. Wonderful.

DEMOISELLE BY GALVINDESIGNLSM
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
It’s refreshing to see such a statement interior executed so well. There is no doubt left in the customer’s mind
that this is a reflection of a Parisian Orangery reinvented. Drawing from the collection of paintings within the building they create a beautifully successful narrative within their
interiors. A triumph.
ANTICA PIZZERIA E CUCINAGENESIN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
There is a joy of craft in this project that is quiet and understated, but creates an atmospheric texture that
catches the low, warm lighting beautifully. It is particularly good to see an approach to interior finishes that is
indistinguishable from the Architecture - rather than being a separate or additional internal ‘veneer’. This is a very
well crafted, beautiful, whole.
VIET NEXT DOORGENESIN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This project is sumptuously detailed with wonderful attention to the tactile details of upholstery, handrails and
wall finishes punctuated by wonderful lighting.
SPIGAJOYCE WANG STUDIO
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The strong 1950’s atmosphere is so rich – this is really great. They’ve done an amazing job with the detailing and
layering of references.
BANKSII VERMOUTH BAR & BISTROLUCHETTI KRELLE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A great project. The separation between indoor and outdoor has been resolved and executed beautifully with the
white framed glass partition. Overall material palette and detailing is excellent.
THE REFUGE BY VOLTAPRINCIPAL
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
They’ve taken a shell that was full of potential, given it attention and built around the existing structure to create a
space that transforms Manchester.
LEVEL ONESTUDIO -GRAM
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The artwork is so well curated. I love the colour-wrapping from the floors and walls – they’re not scared to use the colour. This is somewhere I’d read about and make my
husband take me to dinner.
TONE SHABU-SHABU RESTAURANT TAMINN DESIGN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
There is a calm and consistent feel in this space as materials wrap from floor to ceiling to deliver an
environment that draws you in. The beautiful detailing of backlit mirrors and the juxtaposition of delicate cut-outs
through the hard concretes has a powerful impact.

SUM OF USGOLDEN
The services on offer at The Sum of Us are unique and unlike other fitness studios, so it was important that the space
created reflected this, setting the bar high for others to follow.
Located on High street in Prahran the Victorian double-storey residential building was transformed into a functional studio space for wellness. Working with the builder, Bear Projects, GOLDEN set out to accentuate and honour the existing
details of the building and insert functional joinery and storage solutions for equipment.
14
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Sum of Us converts a narrow, deep plan residential property into an inspiring and calm retreat. Carefully considered from the street
throughout the plan and to private spaces, the project’s subtle approach to design, taking inspiration from the iconography from pilates and yoga, compliments the historic nature of the existing
property in a superb and coherent manner.

FLAMINGO LOUNGE TABANLIOGLU ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Flamingo Lounge impressed us with its handling of detail and materiality; how the fluid seating meets the resin floor and how the artwork brings the festival into the lounge. The lighting scheme compliments the space beautifully, creating
a great atmosphere.
A temporary project executed exceptionally.
TRAINYARD – HOTEL JEN BEIJINGSTICKMAN TRIBE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
An interesting take on the hotel gym, showing two distinct identities. The exercise areas reflect a true Beijing-urban design with lighting and graphics playing key roles, while
the spa element is more restrained and refined with great materiality throughout.
SHANGHAI OMNIJOI INTERNATIONAL CINEMA
ONE PLUS PARTNERSHIP
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
As an installation, the lighting in the theatres themselves is very successful, creating compelling shadows. The lobby
space and thematic furniture integration creates interesting seating opportunities. Very striking.
THE CORE COLLECTIVE WAIND GOHIL + POTTER ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This project tackles the multidimensional nature of a leisure space and offers a great level of detail across gym, spa
and street front café spaces. Clever lighting solutions add whimsy to key areas and enhance the industrial materiality
of the space whilst maintaining a level of comfort.
ZEPHYR LOUNGETHE STELLA COLLECTIVE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A windowless basement has been transformed into a calming retreat-style decompression chamber as a series of well being facilities. Beautifully detailed, the design is
coherent and provides an array of elegant spaces.
WUHAN INSUN INTERNATIONAL CINEPLEX ONE PLUS PARTNERSHIP
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Inspired by the cutting room floor, this project offers a theatrical experience in itself. Offering drama coming out of the screen and into the multiplex, there’s an extraordinary progression of spaces and great use of lighting - another
great cinema project to One Plus Partnership’s always high standard.

IN THERAPY – NORDIC PAVILION,
VENICE BIENNALE 2016MARGE ARKITEKTER
The 15th Venice Architecture Biennale featured the Nordic exhibition ‘In Therapy – Nordic Countries Face to Face’
initiated by ArkDes, Nasjonalmuseet and the Museum of Finnish Architecture, curated by David Basulto and James Taylor Foster.
The exhibition corresponded to the head commissioner Alejandro Aravena’s theme for the greater architecture biennale
‘Reporting from the front’, but sprang from the modern day realities of the Nordic countries.
‘In Therapy’ is an inspiration from the world of psychoanalysis and presents 300 Nordic projects that signify the past, present and future. At the center of the pavilion rises a pyramid which
calls to mind Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The pyramid is a staircase that becomes seating during presentations and
provides a display surface for the project’s description.
16
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A stunning and sensitive combination of finely crafted exhibition design but also a successful and delicate interaction between meeting the theme of Alejandro Aravena’s Biennale with the
architecture of the Nordic Pavilion. There’s expert craftsmanship in the timber detailing and the consideration of user experiences
offers real flexibility.

YINGLIANG STONE ARCHIVE ATELIER ALTER
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The light exterior of this stone archive brings the visitor into the interior space boldly and the complex mosaic floor
is an intricate artwork that fits the context beautifully. The interior features a strong display wall – an angular
installation reminiscent of tilted arcs with great materiality using steel and stone.
OFFSHORE EXPERIENCE – MARITIME MUSEUM ROTTERDAM
KOSSMANN.DEJONG
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Fully immersive, compact, engaging, informative and fun. The mission to educate on the offshore industry has,
very successfully, been achieved through well-considered interactive components that appeal to both children and
adults – it’s a four-dimensional experience.
BONNIER’S ART GALLERYMARGE ARKITEKTER
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Marge have sensitively restructured Bonnier’s Art Gallery, developing and enhancing a more welcoming approach from the street. Working with existing gallery spaces to improve exhibition facilities while providing a level of flexibility inspired by a series of
transformational elements which have given this gallery a new lease of life. A project that is subtle in its materiality, the gallery spaces
remain secondary to the work exhibited.
MAROPENG EXPERIENCE LABOFFICE 24-7 AND DIGITAL FABRIC
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A great example of exhibition design. Scaling up an architect contour model using the latest CNC techniques has resulted
in a space that’s extremely tactile, encouraging visitors to engage with the architecture and the displays. It takes the
same language of the floor and extrudes it to form the cave-like enclosure juxtaposed with the hermetic lab creating a great relationship against the context of the Experience.
FOTO COLECTANIAPILAR LIBANO STUDIO
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A well-judged and considered exercise in the conversion of found space with tactile elements and heritage linings and objects. All the original elements have been restructured
and recombined to form a new home that is publicly accessible and functions within many contexts.
THE CALYXPTW ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The Calyx displays a sophisticated engagement with sustainability and the project’s relationship with nature - especially within its environs at the Sydney Royal Botanic
Gardens. The use of the latest design technology to achieve a flexibility of space is also commendable.
WINNERPUBLIC SECTOR
SUZHOU CHAPELNERI&HU DESIGN AND
RESEARCH OFFICE
The chapel is a feature building within the larger Village zone. As such, it occupies a prime location visible from the main road and along the waterfront. Its architectural language is derived from similar elements found elsewhere in the project, such as
the undulating brick walls and floating white volume – but they are here, taken to another level of articulation. The brick walls
begin to break down to an even more refined scale, where different heights of walls interweave with each other to create
a choreographed landscape journey leading into the building itself.
There is a seamless integration with the surrounding nature as picture windows frame various man-made and natural
landscapes. A mezzanine level hovers overhead to accommodate extra guests, and includes a catwalk encircling the space, allowing 360 degrees of viewing angles. The mezzanine is
integrated into a wood louvered cage element which wraps around the whole upper part of the room.
18
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Neri&Hu’s deft handling of materials and light interplay has produced a beautifully defined sequence of spaces. The relationship between the external metal vale and internal timber vale is impressive and the level
of sophistication in the detailing is extraordinary; specifically the balustrading and bespoke light fixtures.

PUBLIC 05I29 INTERIOR ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
What struck us most, is that for a public building receiving visitors to discuss financial matters this feels
very welcoming and not intimidating to the user. There’s an elegant series of calm spaces which compliments the
context and setting.
LOUNGE 2, SCHIPHOL AIRPORT AMSTERDAMKOSSMANN.DEJONG
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This manages to successfully create distinctive zones, all of which are welcoming and have specific experiential characteristics that engage the user in unique ways with
different materials.
Importantly, and in a fun way, these are a series of territories where one could easily spend the usually tedious
time waiting in a terminal.
NUBO PAL DESIGN GROUP
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Although there are a number of playful moments, NUBO maintains a mature sense that we don’t typically see in play
areas. It’s whimsical yet sophisticated; the colour palette is subdued but still provides a bright and cheerful feeling
owing to the use of natural light in the space.
WINNERRESIDENTIAL INTERIORS
ARMADALE RESIDENCEROB MILLS ARCHITECTURE
& INTERIORS
Armadale Residence presents the transformation of a former industrial building into a generous, inspiring and sustainable multi-generational family home. The client had purchased
and occupied the building while developing the brief for the desired transformation, intimately experiencing its volumes and
becoming acutely aware of its potential.
The client was none other than the architect himself- Rob Mills. Stuart Street became the ultimate expression of his ability to create interior architecture and design interior space for the achievement of great quality of living. This is realised, above all
else, through the creation of a home which promotes well-being through the sensuality, detail, richness and beautiful design of its
interiors.
20
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
For me, Armadale stood out as being really characterful yet still maintaining a timeless, thoughtful quality. The sculptural elements, such as the staircase & kitchen, punctuate the interior and create
real ‘wow’ moments within an otherwise calm and restrained interior. Throughout each space, the use of high end materials make the project feel luxurious but always in an original way. Every detail, large or small has been considered and executed with a sense
of playfulness whilst the overall effect is one of a very grown-up sophisticated family home.

An incredible piece of interior architecture, generous, confident and playful touches with the reading room

HAMPTON PENTHOUSEGOLDEN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
GOLDEN have created a clean and elegant penthouse through their choice of hard finishes and attention to detail. Here they demonstrate that “less is more” creates subtle,
timeless and liveable spaces.
CLIFTOP HOUSEHARE + KLEIN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Clean lines, elegant simplicity, great circulation and a liveable home. Hare + Klein have nailed the client brief
for this beach side home overlooking the ocean, using raw materials, interesting furniture and subtle detailing.
PUMP STATIONJOHNSON NAYLOR
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
One of the most considered projects I have seen in a long time. Johnson Naylor have achieved perfect harmony with the existing architecture and the new interiors. The new
vertical glass windows really connect the building and the interiors to the landscape whilst staying true to the form
of the original building.
ROCK CREEK HOUSENADAAA
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The material palette used for the Rock Creek house interiors has a very calm, even and contemporary tone to it. However, what particularly drew our attention was the
highly original approach to the geometry of the joinery for the staircases and balustrades.
APARTMENT XIVSTUDIO RAZAVI ARCHITECTURE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A coherence of the architectural thinking and the gesture that the designer has put together to create a seamless one-object design that make geometrical shapes bounce on walls, floor and ceiling to create a spaceship-like interior. It is a very personal statement and a strong aesthetic that deserved mentioning as a movement within 21st century architecture inspired the late 20th century
grand architecture of Deconstructivism seen in the work of Daniel Libeskind or Frank Gehry. The work of Studio Razavi is commendable
for its personality and demined edge projecting a true difference of interiors and distinctive powerful style.

CHAPTER KINGS CROSSTIGG COLL ARCHITECTS
A redesign and fit out to student accommodation common parts, which celebrates the local context and industrial heritage
of Kings Cross Station. The spaces were stripped back to express the original concrete and steel structure, then layered
with mosaic tiling, metalwork and bespoke joinery.
Existing ill-defined secondary circulation space was transformed into unique social and study spaces, fostering a sense of
community, which included drawing the public realm into the building.
The project delivery was documented into a design guide, to reinforce the brand and streamline future projects. Flexible spaces and quality finishes ensure longevity in the use and
management of the property.
22
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Tigg+Coll Architects scheme responds perfectly to the Student Housing brief. The attitude of the interior design is both relaxed & inviting but also
absolutely in tune with the urban context of Kings Cross London.
Chapter Kings Cross is what I call Rough Luxe style inspired by the ‘upcycling’ movement in design what we have seen developing the last 10 years. It is a trendy elegant interior developed for a commercial project
that has a very good appeal to young contemporary users and ‘co-habitants. Well done guys keep on the good cohabitation of styles.

Bates Smart have created elegant and contemporary interiors that marry with the Architecture of this

usable spaces.
OPERA RESIDENCES MARKETING SUITEMAKE ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
In the Opera Residences, we felt the space planning was especially successful, promoting a strong flow throughout
the consecutive rooms and allowing the facade and spectacular views to take centre stage. A restrained palette of materials creates a calm, holistic feel allowing key pieces of furniture and lighting to be showcased in a gallery like
setting. Thoughtful design for those who appreciate a more restrained approach!
DEEP OPULENCEVIA ARCHITECTURE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Rich, Layered pallete with a very strong identity. Confident materiality specification and well resolved joinery. A fine and
aspirational apartment design.
LIGHT ARTISANALVIA ARCHITECTURE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
With their Deep Opulence show apartment, for the Altamira Development in Hong Kong, Via Architecture have managed to
find that elusive vein of interior design which somehow manages to contain all of the rich materiality & detail of pre-20th century interiors but delivered strictly within a Modern or contemporary
language. Classic Mid-Century furniture pieces have been used in a very natural way so instead of feeling like period statements they
simply contribute to the overall aesthetic .
WINNERRETAIL INTERIORS GREATER THAN 200 SQUARE METRES
WATERWORKS PRESENTATION CENTRE
CECCONI SIMONE
This condominium sales centre is housed in a heritage building, once a former food market turned water filtration
plant. Inspired by the building’s industrial roots and Art Deco influences, the designers integrated materials that hearken back
to the history of the surroundings, while introducing visitors to the elegance of the future condominium that will one day be
located on the site.
The client’s brief asked for a design that respected and highlighted the heritage building and demonstrated the
uniqueness of the planned development. The goal, as directed by the client, was to create a space that felt less like a sales centre
and more like a design studio.
24
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This dynamic space informs both an aspiration and a drive to engage the customer to be a part of a new whole; imagery, elements and
ideation come full circle to embrace the current customer and entice them to be part of the new environment, and ultimately to literally buy
into being part of the community. Rich tones, raw hewn and elegant accents provide contrasts and engagement to the lifestyle this customer
will become part of.

KLEE KLEEAIM ARCHITECTURE INTERNATIONAL
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Klee Klee sits well with its positioning and Tibetan inspiration, the tranquil space benefits from a liberal use
of wood, a material that adds gravitas to space and unites the lifestyle / fashion offering. The concept creates a bridge between home and retail, a good strategic objective that
invites consumers to amble and peruse, back tracking and re-imagining.
NORDSTROM YORKDALE SHOPPING CENTRECALLISONRTKL
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Having visited in person, I particularly enjoyed the balance of natural daylight, product and art sewn into a natural material palette that forges a highly ‘shoppable’
environment. I also couldn’t help noticing how the designer has merged these key elements whilst at the same time
giving the client complete flexibility over floor fixtures and lighting in a constantly changing and demanding world of
brand evolution within a department store.
THE ISTANBUL BUTCHERDREAMTIME AUSTRALIA
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I really enjoyed this presentation. It not only narrates a beautiful story of brand and butchery through the
architecture and interior design – but it elevates the whole notion of shopping for meat into a genuinely luxurious
experience at every level. Charming and passionate in every detail. My compliments to the client’s ambition and the
dedication and execution of their designer.
PRIMARK DAMRAKHMKM
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
It’s lovely when a designer and client take on board cultural sensitivities within their ideas. I particularly enjoyed the
wayfinding and graphic / material interpretations that are interweaved throughout the echoing various themes of
historical Dutch architecture.
COH SHOWROOMMONTALBA ARCHITECTS
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A showroom is a place for buyers to work and review collections with model fittings – it should be a flexible and adaptable environment with great lighting, lots of space
and be a perfect foil for the product to sell itself. This is all about restraint and the architects here have ticked all the
boxes of the brief.
BERNHARDT SHOWROOMROTTET STUDIO
JUDGES’ COMMENTS

olfactory and visual inspirations of the brand.
Enter through a window display and climb as that one who climbs the top of a tree by some dark stairs to discover a small space embraced by two gardens containing only one table... an intriguing horizontal surface of seven meters in length; on it
unfolds an intimate universe that reveals the botanical spirit of Xinú, that through meticulous tailoring seeks in a personal way
to open a window for the sensory enjoyment.

This concept works in every way because it’s just that, a ‘concept’. Unique and fresh, this project offers a current dimension in retail where the quality of the product is grounded in the foundation of good interior design; where the experience creates a feeling through materially and light, sensitive to the space. Xinú is intriguing, yet comforting, it has a distinctly human feel
achieved through an expert use of natural materials.

AESOP THE SHAYDAVID JAMESON ARCHITECT
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I particularly enjoyed the jazz narrative using drum skins within the shelving displays so that the entire store acts as
a tectonic instrument.
LEE JI EU HAIR STYLING SALONEXAKUAN SPACE DESIGN CO.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This a successful attempt at turning a hair salon into a lifestyle experience. The first impression is of a textured
space, that feels more like a home than a salon. The expert use of recycled wood and natural materials adds a tangible emotive feel to the various spaces, and unifies the disparate
rooms. The idea seems definitely to create a sense of community around the salon.
GRAND GOURMET FLAGSHIPHHDFUN
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I love the complete disregard of this space, Grand Gourmet is making a statement and that’s the purpose of this design. Evident in the algorithmic space is a remarkable attention to
detail and precise use of craft and technology. While this might not be to everyone’s taste it certainly delivers on the wow-factor.

SKY CENTRAL WORKSPACEHASSELL
The vast, 45,000 sqm workplace designed by HASSELL as part of the new Sky Central headquarters unites more than 3,500 people across three levels as they work together to deliver
world-class entertainment to millions of sky customers globally.
Each floor at Sky Central averages 11,500 sqm – the equivalent width of three jumbo jets – and the space represents one of
the UK’s largest agile workplaces. These generous spaces with room to move are great for Sky – but a challenge for our
designers, who needed to create a sense of connection and belonging for Sky’s workforce.

WEWORK WEIHAI ROAD: CHINA FLAGSHIP COWORKING SPACE
LINEHOUSE
WeWork Weihai Lu is nestled in a turn of the century brick building; a former opium factory and artist residence. This
building is surrounded by an old residential district in the heart of Shanghai. Linehouse celebrated the grandeur of the building, encapsulating the feeling of a grand hotel, transporting guests and members on an unexpected journey of whimsy, voyeurism
and festivity.
The existing site is a combination of a brick historical building with further industrial additions that have been made over
the years. The reception is located in this in-between zone of the old and new. Linehouse played with this narrative in the
design. The reception counter is clad in heritage wood panelling, surrounded by a concrete base. A bronze metal structure
hangs lighting and create leaners. Behind the reception, guests are greeted with a neon sign ‘Ring For Service’ contained in a
cabinet of curiosities, painted in a light blue.

THE STELLA COLLECTIVEMEMOCORP OFFICE
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
A beautifully curated space and seductive in its quality of design. What it’s doing is changing the style of ‘workplace’ and moving it away from ‘office’ to something much more residential. There’s an amazing attention to detail and they’ve made sure the brand is
portrayed appropriately in the space in terms of what they do. You can tell it’s a real pleasure to be in. Remarkably beautiful.

EPIDEMIC SOUNDWHITE ARKITEKTER
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The cultural background of the client required a true level of authenticity and that follows through in the design. There’s an element of anti-design too, which works well in creating the
right sense of buzz - you feel like you’re in an underground club. The authenticity is evident. We appreciated that the lighting is
atmospheric creating a smokey, layered effect.’
WINNERLIGHTING PROJECTS
THE PAVILIA HILLNIPEK
For the exclusive condominium developed by New World Development, the goal was to create a sophisticated
atmosphere to set a new standard in contemporary living at the heart of the bustling city of Hong Kong. By positioning
light sources at low height in most of the communal spaces, a dramatic yet relaxing atmosphere was created.
Natural materials such as wood, stone, gold leaf, and Japanese paper are carefully enhanced by light and shadow to create focal point in the space and achieves seamless visual
connections between the interior spaces and the exterior Zen gardens. The atmosphere is constantly transformed with the
dynamic volume of light and the colors of the materials by the natural light and artificial light.

Both the architecture and light are well balanced and executed well – It really makes me want to visit the project in person and experience

WINNERFURNITURE
ANHEDRAL TABLESTOURMALINE
The Anhedral collection of tables is a minimal exploration in form that takes on the magic of materials and structure. The elegant geometry demonstrates how a minor intervention in
materials can transform them visually and structurally. A simple curve or fold in a sheet of paper can strengthen it substantially.
The forms were inspired by looking at Aeronautics and the angles of bird’s wings as they take flight. The name Anhedral means “downward inclination of an aircraft’s wing”. Adding a curve along an angle to a thin sheet of metal creates a
geometry that becomes rigid and structural. Keeping the lines minimal was key to appreciating the sculptural surface quality,
allowing light to cascade along the curves and edges. While the colours are bright and optimistic, the overall form is
complementary to classic proportions.
