Online Safety

The idea of strangers walking freely in and out of our home at night is a frightening thought. Allowing them free access to our children’s bedrooms is unthinkable. The reality is that we do this every day without even realizing it.

With a cell phone and access to the internet, communication is unlimited. Our children can chat with strangers day and night. Hidden behind a screen, a thirty-eight year old man suddenly becomes a fifteen year old boy simply flirting with your daughter by messaging her through a game app.

Monitoring your child’s online presence and gaming activities is a critical piece of being a parent today. The age-old argument about privacy versus secrecy often keeps parents from asking critical questions. One speaker put it best when he said, “Privacy is what we need in the restroom - secrecy is what we hide from others because we shouldn’t be doing it.” Knowing your child’s passwords and following them on social media should not be viewed as an invasion of their privacy but more along the lines of making them wear a seatbelt. Our job, parents and the school, is to keep them safe from harm and that sometimes means keeping them safe from themselves.

Keep the dialogue open about what sites they are using, what games they are playing online, and who they are messaging. Many of today’s games and most social apps allow students to post videos – something that child predators and human traffickers appreciate. No predator starts the conversation by saying, “I’m a child predator and in a very short time, I’ll ask for photos.” Instead, they form a “friendship” and “understand” your child better than anyone. Teach your child what to look for and to always let you know if strangers try to start conversations with them.

While cell phones absolutely serve a purpose, like automobiles, our children have to be taught to use them safely. Like locking the doors to keep strangers out, check up on your child’s online habits and keep them safe.

The Walt Disney Company offers several conversation starters and safety rules on their Internet Safety site: https://privacy.thewaltdisneycompany.com/en/internet-safety/ Other tips for online safety: https://www.netsmartz.org/Home https://www.komando.com/kids/commandments https://www.wiredsafety.com/

Help our Cheerleaders Help Our Community The Oak Ridge cheerleaders are launching another community service project! We have partnered up the with Junior League of the Woodlands in order to participate in the Giving Gowns Foundation. Giving Gown Foundation promotes confidence and self-esteem in Houston-area high school girls by helping them attend formal events in style, regardless of financial circumstance. During Boutique Day, each girl is paired with a personal shopper who helps her select a dress and accessories to wear to her high school prom (everything is hers to keep!) Giving Gown Foundation’s mission is for each girl to be treated with respect, grace, and love. We will be collecting the following items from now until Spring Break: ● Prom and formal dresses: recent fashions from the last five years with no visible stains or tears. All sizes accepted. The greatest need is for sizes 16 to 36. Dresses do not need to be dry-cleaned. ● Formal shoes: All sizes accepted with no visible stains or tears. The greatest need is for sizes 8 to 12. ● Formal handbags ● Swag bag items: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, nail polish, soap, feminine products and hair spray. Each girl will go home with a bag filled with supplies. I have a drop box located in my classroom B218, and you can drop off at anytime after 1st/2nd period. Clean out those closets and those toiletry drawers and help someone get the experience of a lifetime!

On Campus Parking

All on campus parking spots have been assigned. If your child did not receive a parking spot on campus, they can purchase Woodforest Parking tags for $20 and park at the stadium. A shuttle bus will deliver them to and from school. Before any tag can be purchased, they must register online. All instructions are located on the ORHS website under “Student Parking”. Students can contact Ms. Baumann in A215 with any parking questions.

Food Deliveries to School Oak Ridge High School will not accept student lunch deliveries from a restaurant or from a delivery service such as "doordash." The only lunches that are accepted in the front office are those delivered by a parent or family member and should be picked up in the cafeteria at the Principal’s table during the student’s lunch period. Thank you for you cooperation.

How Can We Improve?

New Way to Pay!

The WebStore has been replaced with School Cash Online. This system operates differently from the WebStore in that any item that is available for purchase by your student appears on your account. Because of this, your child’s account will have many optional items listed that they may not be interested in. Class fees will appear as required and if they are not paid by the due date, the fee will appear as past due. When setting up your account, keep in mind purchases will only appear on the online account for each login, and not on all online accounts for that student. Knowing this, please consider having one account per household so everyone in the household can use the same account and see their online purchases, which is required for some items. School Cash Online will allow multiple students attending any CISD school to be added to one login.
