ANG AKON PAGTUON SA MGA “ALTAR SERVERS”New Guidelines

“Altar servers are chosen fromamong the faithful who display adesire to serve in a more intimateway during the Holy Sacrifice of theMass. It is an extreme privilege tokneel so close to the altar as ourloving Savior Jesus Christ becomestruly present, body, blood, soul anddivinity, at the moment ofConsecration.

A server is uniquely joined in theHeavenly Supper of the Lamb andserves in the company of thoseeternally singing Holy, Holy, Holy,is the Lord God Almighty, who wasand is and is to come! Accordingly,a server has a solemn responsibilityto do all assigned duties withattention, dignity and reverence.”

History

“Altar servers have a rich heritage, going back to Jesus himself. Inpreparation for the Last Supper,Jesus sent two of his disciples toprepare the Passover for Himselfand the Twelve. Over the centuries,as ceremonies became morecomplex and Latin became thelanguage of the Church, speciallytrained assistants called Acolytes

became common. Eventually thisevolved into todays altar serverswho love Jesus, love the Mass, andwant to give their time and talentsin the service of God and hisChurch.” (stjohnbaptist.info/marianguild/marianguild12.html)

Wala sila nahigku-an ngamalisya. May isa diri ngaginadul-ong kag ginasugat pa nitatay niya kon aga halos saadlaw-adlaw. Ang kapisan kag“commitment” makatilingala. Dirinagasugod na ang sahi sang“espiritualidad.” Tanan kitamakatuon diri nga huwaran. Diutaynga hitabo sa parokya peromakahatag sing dako ngakahulugan.

Sa St. James Parish, New York City, maayo man ang akon napanilagansa mga Altar Boys sa pila ka tuig ngaako ang isa nila ka adviser anay.Upod ako sa ila sharing, games kagrecollection. “Well-organized” angila grupo.

ORATIO IMPERATA

PARA SA PAG-AMLIG SANG KABUHI

“If you are frightened and lookfor failure and poverty, you willget them, no matter how hardyou try to succeed. Lack offaith,... in what life will do foryou, cuts you off from the goodthings.. . Expect victory and youwill make victory.”

The gospel story tells us that theapostles were mixed up, confused andfrustrated. They were puzzled fromwhat Jesus had told them. They wereafraid of being all alone by themselvesto face life. One contemporarypsychologist says that the fear offacing life all alone is the mostterrifying human fear. Living with thethought of having to grapple with theproblems of human existence all byyourself, with no help of whatsoever,no guidance or consolation fromanyone is devastating to humanexistence.

Is not this feeling the same feeling thatwe are also experiencing once in awhile in our day to day living? Is it notthe fear felt by an old widow who livesalone somewhere who without herhusband at her side and her childrenare far away from home living theirown lives? Is not this feeling a feelingof “homesickness” felt by us when weleft for the first time the comfortbrought about by the familiarity of ourhomes for the first time for anunfamiliar new school or for a newplace in seeking for fortune? Is it notthe paralyzing terror that we haveundergone as young boys and girlswhen we lost our way back to our homefrom school?

Jesus understood the feelings of hisapostles. Giving them an assurancethat he is with them at all times andtheir fears were groundless, he said tothem: “I will ask the Father and he willgive you another Paraclete to be withyou always. . . I will not leave youorphaned; I will come back to you . . .”This solemn promise of Jesus wasfulfilled when Philip under the impulseof the Holy Spirit laid his hands on thefaithful in Samaria a spiritual helpbeyond baptism was given to them –the giving of the Holy Spirit.

This event was not confined to Samariaor to people of Samaria or during thosetimes alone. Rather, it was perpetuatedthroughout the space and time. Thissolemn vow of Jesus was also fulfilledin us. We too have received the HolySpirit; hence, we are not also alone. The presence of the Holy Spiritsignifies the presence of the Father andthe Son within us.

This truth, however, demands that weshould not have to take it easily. Wehave to search God within ourselves. As St. Augustine used to say in his“Confessions: “ And see, you werewithin and I was in the external worldand sought you there”. . .”You werewith me, and I was not with you..I tasted you, and I feel you but hungerand thirst for you. You touched me,and I am set on fire to attain the peacewhich is yours.” (xxvii) (38) To seekGod within ourselves is to respond tohis presence within us. So, in seekingGod, one has to talk with him, one hasto have a dialogue with him. Thisdialogue is attained through prayer. Acertain spiritual writer writes thatprayer is “nothing else but a dialoguebetween two persons in love.” Godloves us and we love God. So, when wepray we are in a conversation with Godwho loves us and is present within us.

It is horrifying indeed to be left allalone in life with all its real andimaginary problems. However, there isno need for us to experience fear of allsorts if God is within us. All that wehave to do is to turn to God with asimple, earnest prayer in every aspectof our life as reflected by the lyrics ofthe song “What a friend we have inJesus” dedicated by Joseph M. Scrivenin 1877 to his mother:

“Are you weak and heavy laden,cumbered with a load to care;

Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do your friends despise, forsakeyou? Take it to the Lord inprayer

In His arms He’ll take and shieldyou, you will find a solacethere.”

ANG PAGDUAW NI MARIA SANTISIMA SA IYA

PAKAISA NGA SI SANTA ISABEL

PIESTA NGA ADLAW: MAYO 31

Ini nga kapiestahan una nga ginsaulog sang tuig 13th

Ang Ebanghelyo ni San Lukas nagasaysay: This meetingof two relatives sharing their own experiences of God’sgoodness and love not only to them but to all humanity.

There are several lessons that we can learn from thisexperience of Mary and Elizabeth. First, like Mary, weare being called upon to bring the Lord with us when-ever and wherever we are. When people see us, they, too must “leap with joy” for they see and experience Jesusin us. We must be bearers of Christ. We must be genuineCHRIST-ians.

Another lesson we can learn from the Visitation of Maryto her cousin Elizabeth is that God is the only source of

our happiness. It is a joy that cannot be taken away fromus because it is rooted in our faith and love in a Godwho is the source of all goodness. Therefore, let us notcling to things and people who can only offertemporary happiness. Let us focus our gaze on God alonesuffices, according to St. Therese of Avila.

As we celebrate Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, let us keepthese lessons in mind and follow the example of Marywho never forgot that God who “has done great things “for her will be her source of happiness.

Pangamuyo:

adlaw sang amon kabuhi.

Amen.

“THE JOYS OF VOLUNTEERISM”

“Belief in a dream, dedication to an ideal faith andsacrifice, with a fire of a simple Christian faith in his heart, and a power of a holy purpose in his will...”

These are few of the noble characteristics of St. MarcellinChampagnat that must be followed by every peopleeveryday.

I am Gina L. Misoles, born on July 6, 1990 at Polomolok,South Cotabato. I grew up in the island of Mindanao andtook up tertiary education at Notre Dame of DadiangasUniversity, General Santos City. I am currently staying herein the wonderful and lovely island of Visayas.

Though Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, I was due toget to know St. Marcellin Champagnat and his great worksand love for children. The noble deeds he left in the lives ofthe many, taught and inspired me to have a “heart thatknows no bounds.” His unconditional love for the children, especially the least favoured, deeply moved my heart tofollow his steps even in simple ways. It’s a turning point inmy life which delightfully enlightened me to the path ofvolunteerism and community service. My college life wasnot at all about academics alone, but peace advocacy, volunteerism and community service as well.

I decided to take up my review for CPA Board Exam in Iloilo. When I left Mindanao, I thought it was the end of myCommunity Service Life, but I was wrong. It is still fresh inmy mind the first time I joined the celebration of the HolyEucharist at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Leganes. Beforethe final blessing, an announcement caught my attention. It was all about the Volunteer Catechists’ Seminar for theMay Flower Catechesis . After the mass, I approached theperson who announced it and inquired for the details. WithGod’s grace, I was able to participate the two-day seminar.

May 1 came, the first day of the May Flower Catechesis. Ihad mixed emotion, partly happy and partly worried.Happy, because I get the chance to get along with the kidsand share the life of Mama Mary and Jesus to them. I wasworried because I am not fluent in speaking hiligaynon

dialect. Yet, deep in my heart, I know everything will befine. Day by day, my heart is filled with fun, excitement andjoy. I am touched with the generosity of the people in thecommunity who selflessly donate foods for the kids. Mostespecially, I am touched with the participation of the kidsand the eagerness to share their time with Mama Mary andJesus and cheerfully offering their fresh flowers to MamaMary.

I was amazed with the kids of Sitio Irrigation. Even athree-year-old kid knows how to deliver “Amay Namon,”“Maghimaya ka Maria” and the like. Not only I taught thekids with the basic teachings of Catholic Church, they tootaught me how to speak the Hiligaynon dialect and the“Amay Namon” and “Maghimaya ka Maria” as well. I amthankful that only approximately 10% of them are naughty.Understandably, they are kids and kids by nature like moreto play than to have lessons. Everytime I notice that theywere sleepy, I would question them, “Mga bata, ok pa bakayo?” and they would answer, “Aba, ok syempre!”(with an action adopted from our child-friendly-activity).For active and participative students, we give them a“Dionisia” clap, “now” clap, “darna” clap, “good” clap, “nice”clap or “let’s go” clap, plus other surprises in order toencourage them to be more attentive and participative.

During the rosary, though not all are behaving well, yet mostof them respond religiously. Another nice thing alert themis that most of them never failed to being fresh flowers forMama Mary. After the rosary, the offering of the freshflowers follows. It is my hope and my prayer that may allthat we have shared to them will be loved / cherished bythem and that they will continue to live a Christian lifemeaningfully and happily.

The May Flower Catechesis is about to end, yet I know inmy heart that the joy, the wonderful experiences and thecheerful moments with the kids and with the people in SitioIrrigation will stay forever in my mind, in my heart and inmy soul.

May this wonderful experience of mine be an in-spiration, to other people, especially to the youthto selflessly share their time, talent and treasureto the people in need, and simply be a blessing toeveryone.
