of the Fall River Diocese in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Toward the end of St. John Vianneys life, aspilgrims flocked to Ars from all over France, theywould leave marveling not only about havingwitnessed God in a man, as onecontemporary described Vianney, but God ina parish. They were amazed at the warmhospitality, radiant faith and ardent charity ofthe people of the village, who would routinelyopen their homes to the overflow guests, welcome them as if they were Christ, feed them, encourage them in the Christian life, pray with

and for them, and in short, love them as aChristian should. Because many of the pilgrimshad to wait over a week for five minutes withthe Cur of Ars in the confessional, it was thismuch lengthier contact with the Christians ofArs that would generally prepare these pilgrimsfor true and deep conversion: they witnessedin the ordinary people of Ars the type of faith towhich they recognized that they, too, werecalled.

The transformation of the people of Ars can becalled their Curs greatest miracle. When he

was assigned as parish priest in 1818,Fr. Courbon, the vicar general, laconicallyinformed him, There is not much love for Godthere. You must put some. Few werepracticing the faith with any type of regularity, not to mention fervor. More people went to thetaverns on the Lords Day than to Church.Blasphemy was rampant. Only a handfulfamilies prayed. The young were substitutinglust for love. The state of catecheticalformation was abysmal, due not just to theindoctrination of the French Revolution and apaucity of able catechists, but also to a general

lack of interest among the villagers.

They were a case study in the first three typesof soil Jesus mentioned in his Parable of theSower and the Seed: there were severalleading villagers with impenetrable soil whothought they already had all the importantanswers; there were others with rocky soil, whowere superficially open to Gods message butwho lacked the virtue to persevere in allowingthe transformative seeds to grow; the majorityseemed to have thorny soil, where worldly caresand anxieties from work to the hunger for

human respect constantly choked the growthof Gods word within them. Very few had soilthat would much fruit at all, not to mention the30, 60 or 100 fold the Lord described.

It took St. John Vianney decades to till the soilof those in the village. Even though there wereonly sixty families and 230 people upon hisarrival, it took him eight years to get most of thefamilies of the village to return to Mass, 25 yearsto eradicate the taverns, and 29 years to

eliminate the debauched dances called thevogues. Once he had eliminated these rocksand thorns from the village soil, however, heneeded still more time truly to form them inChristian virtue so that they could bear fruit inabundance. Not only is all of this a testamentto Fr. Vianneys pastoral perseverance, but it isalso a palpable example of the importance ofpriestly stability in assignments. Thetransformation of Ars from a place where therewas no love for God to one that radiated pietyand charity literally took decades and likelyoccurred only because St. John Vianney was

pastor there for 41 years.Priestly stability is something that, during thisYear for Priests [just concluded], the wholeChurch needs to ponder anew. For priests tobe pastorally effective in being the Lordsinstrument to sanctify and save his people, itsnot enough that they be contagiously holythemselves. They also need time. If a priest asholy as St. John Vianney needed severaldecades to transform the people of a tinyparish in a simpler era, how much more timewill priests who are not as zealous as the Cur

of Ars need to transform much larger parishesin a more complicated one?

Pastoral stability has always been viewed bythe Church as a positive good, for both priestand parishioners. The Second Vatican Councilsays that the good of souls demands pastoralstability and Church law enshrines it. It isnecessary that a parish priest [pastor] have thebenefit of stability. Therefore, he is to be namedfor an indefinite period of time, Canon 522states. Under certain conditions, the Churchallows dioceses to set terms for pastors, but

specifies that the minimal term should be arenewable six years. In the Diocese of Fall

River, there are no terms and pastors areappointed indefinitely.

At a functional level, pastoral stability allows theparish priest time to accomplish his essentialtasks. In order to be an effective teacher, sanctifier and leader of his people, the pastorobviously needs to get to know his flock, andthis takes time. As priests get fewer and thetasks for which they are responsible become

greater, even more time is needed. In asmall-to-midsize parish of 500 families, if apastor were to carve out from among parishmeetings and marriage, baptismal andcounseling appointments one night a week tomake home visits, it would take him ten yearsto visit every household once. In the past, pastors had the ability to do this, because theyremained in their assignments for decades andwere generally assisted by several other priests. They got to know families over three or fourgenerations and the people got to know themin return. They had time to inaugurate and bringto maturity schools and other pastoralprograms. They were able to get to know wellthe pastoral lay of the land, to begin initiativesto improve their neighborhoods and care for theneedy, to develop friendships and goodworking relationships with civic leaders, tobecome known and respected by Catholics andnon-Catholics alike, so that they couldeffectively collaborate with community leadersto address various problems that arose.Pastors are weaker today in most of theseareas because they are not as secure in theirassignments.

Pastoral stability is even more important at atheological and ecclesiological level. Thepastor is meant to be in his parish aquasi-sacrament of Christs own relationshipto his bride the Church: a committed presencewho lays down his life for his bride and not justa transient figure. The priest is called fatherbecause he is supposed to be true spiritualfather to his people, not an ephemeral spiritualguide. Real dads worthy of the name are not apresence just for five or ten years in theirfamilies lives before they leave and mom bringshome another dad. When priests do not havetrue stability, the familial bond between priestand people the Church envisions never has achance to develop because parishioners arereluctant to invest the time to form deep bondswith those whom they fear are only aroundtemporarily. The priest, moreover, is supposedto be a sign and agent of unity in a parishcommunity and a pastor cannot fulfill thisresponsibility without stability; if pastors areroutinely transferred every five or ten years, theresult is that they can begin to function and be

viewed like stewards of ecclesiastical goods,or branch managers of Catholic Church, Inc.

    THE IMPORTANCEOF PRIESTLYSTABILITY

The source of unity and stability in parish life, rather than the priest, often becomes theparish staff.

During this [past] Year for Priests, thisdiscussion of priestly stability was very timelybecause in many places priestly transfers, rather than priestly stability, are looked upon atthe practical level as the positive good.Pastors are being transferred not just when

another pastor retires, takes ill, defects or dies as they always have been but as aroutine matter of course in what can sometimesseem like an annual ecclesiastical game ofmusical chairs. There are, clearly, someadvantages to regular transfers: as in anyprofession, it can provide new challenges, prevent loss of zeal and personal ororganizational stagnation, and enableconvenient exits from inconvenient situations. But, as mentioned above, there are also cleardisadvantages, at a theological and practicallevel, and thats why priestly stability, rather thanregular transfers, is enshrined in canon law.

Not every priest is St. John Vianney and notevery priest, if left in place for 41 years, wouldhelp to make his people saints. But if priests ata practical level do not enjoy true stability intheir office, not even priests as holy andzealous as St. John Vianney will have the timeto sanctify their people.

    Some following observations/remarks:

Some parishioners who are discontentedwith some recent changes have said: Anywayafter the parish priest is gone with his tenure ofoffice, we will return to the parish.

A parish priest has this conversation with aperson who said: I received a lucrative parishaward in exchange of my free services to theparish.

A parishioner believes that his posts in theprevious administration are permanent.

Lay minister remarks: Lets go home for theparish doesnt provide enough for our morningsnacks.

A priest remarks: Why should I finish thisexpensive project when I have just another sixyears of term.

A parish priest notices that some funds werereported lately to him in an incomplete amount.

A parish priest observed that some criticalparish posts are already filled up by same peopleof the previous administration.

A parish secretary tendered his immediateresignation upon the arrival of the new parishpriest: Father, I am handing in my resignation

papers in order that you can have a free handin the selection of the new personnel.

    S T. ANN & J OACHIM ,PARENTS OF TH EB LESSED VIRGIN MARY:FEAST DAY - J ULY 26_________________REV. F R. G ERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

Our saints for this week are Saints Anne

and Joachim, the parents of the Blessed

    Virgin Mary.

The name Anne is the English

translation of the Hebrew proper noun

    Hannah meaning grace. This name

could be spelled in several ways like

Ann, Anne or Anna. It is the traditional

name of the mother of the Blessed

    Virgin Mary.

The lives and the names of Sts. Joachimand Anne are not mentioned in the

    Sacred Scriptures, Sacred Oral

Tradition and the Magisterium of the

Church. So, very little is known of these

saints. The knowledge that we have of

them is taken from the three

    apocryphal literatures known as the

Gospel of the Nativity of Mary, the

    Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and the

    Protoevangelium of James which

goes back to A.D. 150. The authenticity

of these sources was questioned by

    latter theologians, particularly the

    Protoevangelium of James. In the

    Eastern Church the Protoevangelium of

James is accepted with great authority

for some parts of it were read on the

feasts of Mary by the Greeks, Syrians,

Copts, and Arabians. In the Wes,

however, it was rejected by the Fathers

of the Church. Its presence was ignored

until the 13th century when Jacobus de

Voragine incorporated it in his workthe Golden Legend. From that time

on the story of St. Anne spread over the

West until she became one of the most

popular saints of the Latin Church.

It is said that some time after the death

of St. Anne her supposed relics were

brought from the Holy Land to

Constantinople in 710 and were kept in

the church of St. Sophia in 1333. In the

tradition of the church of Apt in

southern France it was said that herbody was brought to that church by

St. Lazarus, the friend of Jesus Christ.

It was kept in secret in that place by

St. Auspicius (d. 398) until it was found

again during the reign of Charlemagne.

These then were transferred to a

magnificent chapel in 1664 near the

church (feast, 4 May). The head of

St. Anne was kept at Mainz up to 1510

where it was stolen and brought to

Dren in Rheinland. St. Anne is the

patroness of Brittany. She is venerated

at Notre Dame dAuray, Diocese ofVannes. In Canada she is the principal

patron of the province of Quebec.

St. Anne is patroness of women in

labor. As such, she is represented

holding the Blessed Virgin Mary in her

lap who again carries on her arm the

child Jesus. She is also patroness of

miners as Christ being compared to

    gold while Mary to silver.

Skeptics declare we can never learn

from people whom we know nothingabout. So, it follows too that we can

never honor them. Can this fact apply

too to the parents of Mary Sts. Anne

and Joachim? How come then that

they are honored by the church?

But whatever the names of the parents

of Jesus were or the facts of their lives

were, the truth is that it was the parents

of Mary who nurtured Mary, taught

her, brought her up to be a worthy

Mother of God. It was their teachingthat led her to respond to Gods request

with faith, Let it be done to me as you

will.It was their kind of parenting that

Mary must have patterned her own

parenting of her own son, Jesus, as

Luke tells us Mary, pondered all these

things In her heart. It was their faith

that laid the foundation of courage and

strength that allowed her to stand by

the cross as her son was crucified and

    still believe.

    I am t he M ed i a t r i x o f A l l Grace

nga: Blessed Mother, Virgin, Madonna,Our Lady. kag iban pa.

Sa pihak nga bahin, ginasiling nga: TheBlessed Mother is invoked in the Churchunder the titles: Advocate, Helper,Benefactress, and Mediatrix w hich meansfemale mediator. Pope Benedict XVI, inan apostolic letter, said that in everymiracle, we recognize the mediation ofMary. By her manifold intercession, shecontinues to bring gifts of eternal

    salvation.

Yari ang estorya nahanungod sa atonMahal nga Iloy, Mary Medtrix of All Grace:

While Teresita w as pra ying in the conventgarden on September 12, suddenly a vine

began to shake. Our Lady a ppeared to theseer and requested that she kiss the earthand return to the same spot for fifteenconsecutive days. When Our Ladyappeared, She wa s on a cloud, dressed in

white, hands clasped, and a goldenRosary hanging from Her right hand. Herdress was very white, very simple, and

had a narrow belt tied around Her. Shewas ra diant with beauty.

Our Lady requested the vine to be blessed, and also requested that a statue was to

be placed at the site of the apparition. These were a ll accomplished.

During the appar itions in 1948, Our Ladystressed humility, penance, prayers forthe clergy and the Pope, and to pray theRosary . Teresita reported that there wa sone secret for herself, one for the Carmelconvent in Lipa City, one for China, andalso one for the entire world.

Our Lady requested that a Mass be heldon the 12th day of every month. Before Shedeparted for the last time, the Blessed

Virgin identified Herself as: I am theMediatrix of All Grace

There are accounts of a blue birdappearing at the vine where Our Ladyappeared. There are also accounts of thespinning sun, heavy fragrance of roses, and showers of rose petals that hadmiraculous images of Christ, Mary, andother Holy Scenes on them. The rosepetals (one is pictured on the top of thispage, and another is pictured on the

bottom) are reported to have remarkablecuring powers.

It is also reported that Teresita receiveda Host for Holy Communion on hertongue from an angel on an occasion

when she was unable to attend Massbecause she was sick in bed. Teresita hadother mystical experiences including

visions of the Sacred Heart, a multitude

of angels, St. Cecilia, St. Theresa ofLisieux, and many other saints. The seer

was also seen to go into a state ofunconsciousness, and then, while lying onthe floor, enact the agony of Christ on theCross. This phenomenon was witnessed

by the prioress, Bishop Obviar, andmembers of the Carmel community atLipa.

Tungod sining hitabo, The Second VaticanCouncil, in reflecting on the significantrole of Mary in the salvation of mankind, said: In suffering with Him as He died

on the cross, she cooperated in the workof the Savior, in an altogether singular way, by obedience, faith, hope, andburning love, to restore supernatural lifeto souls. As a result, she is our Mother inthe order of grace. (Lumen Gentium #61)

Let us honor Mary, the Mother of Gracetoday as w e also pray for ourselves, that

we may indeed be more worthy recipientsof Gods mercy and grace.

May Our Lady Mediatrix of All Grace, beour inspiration as we endeavor to becomeinstruments of Gods, gr aces to others.

Our Lady , Mary Mediatrix of All Grace,Pray for us!

Ginapasalamatan man ang tanan nga nagbulig tigayon sining kahiwatan kagsa tanan nga nagpakigbahin.

Kabay nga aton mapabutyag nga: KITA TANAN MAY ISA KAKASING-KASING KAG MAY ISA KA KALAG.
