Wet Season Resulting in Quite a Lot of Black Rot I have been receiving quite a few pictures of Black Rot (Guignardia bidwellii) over my phone and e-mail. Our wet Midwest weather has really increased the potential of this disease this season. Berries infected in late May through mid-June are now showing black rot symptoms. There is nothing you can spray to clean up what you already have. Black Rot (Guignardia bidwellii) is the most common and destructive fungus disease we have of grapes here in the Midwest. American cultivars have varying levels of susceptibility while most of the French varieties (Vitis vinifera) are very susceptible. Black rot will attack all green tissues of grapes and will infect green tissue anytime the temperature is between 60-90°F and there is free water on the surface of the living tissue. Continual infections of black rot can occur from pre-bloom to veraison. A good fungicide spray program starting at 2 weeks before bloom and ending around 3 weeks after bloom is required to protect the fruit. The berries become resistant to further infection soon after this period of time. Other green tissues can continue to become infected. Berry symptoms often do not appear until the berries are about half grown. Small, round, white to light-brownish spots form on the fruit. The rotted tissue in these spots soften, and becomes sunken. These spots will enlarge and the berry will often go from pink to purple to brown and finally dry up to look like a black raisin. There are no control measures one can take once you start to see the symptoms on the fruit. The dry raisins are called mummies and are full of spore producing structures that can spread the disease. The amount of next year’s early season infection will be directly related to how many of these mummies are left in the vineyard and on the trellis. Removal of these mummies out of the vineyard is essential for a good disease control program.

Sudden Vine Collapse

Mid-summer sudden vine collapse (SVC) is a common problem seen in Iowa vineyards. Sometimes caused by trunk diseases or physical damage; most often I see it as the result of winter freeze injury to the trunks and cordons. Shallow roots can also be damaged during severe long and cold winters. It may be because the vine had not hardened off going into the winter properly or a mid-winter or early spring warm-up and re-freeze occurred that damaged the outer food transporting phloem cells just under the bark. Harder freezes can also damage the cambium and water transporting xylem cells that lie just inside the phloem layer.

Additional poor site, hot-dry weather and over-cropping increases the chance of the vine suddenly shutting down because what is left of the damaged phloem, cambial and xylem cells cannot handle the increase needs of the green tissue in mid-summer.

Ways to reduce the chances of sudden vine collapse would include proper vineyard management, good site selection and proper cold tolerant variety selection. Though not a huge problem, Marquette is one variety that I often see and hear of having this problem here in Iowa. In my opinion, we are still seeing the long term stress effects from the drought of 2012 and cold-long 2013 / 2014 winter in many of our vineyards today. mlw Additional Resources: 1. Léon Millot It was created in 1911 in the Oberlin Institute in Colmar, Alsace, by the French viticulturist Eugène Kuhlmann (1858–1932) by crossing the hybrid grape Millardet et Grasset 101-14 O.P. (which is Vitis riparia × Vitis rupestris[2]) with Goldriesling, which is Vitis vinifera. The variety was named after the French winemaker and tree nurseryman Léon Millot. Léon Millot was the product of the same crossing trials as Lucie Kuhlmann, Marechal Joffre and Maréchal Foch, and these three varieties are related. From: Wikipedia

International Cold Climate Wine Competition Registration is now open for the 7th annual International Cold Climate Wine Competition, which will be held on August 18, 2015, on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. There are 38 official cold climate grape varieties eligible for this competition which are considered to be hardy without winter protection in USDA Zone 4 and are known to survive temperatures of -20°F or lower. All commercial wineries are invited to enter wines made up of a minimum of 75% cold-hardy varieties. The ICCWC's expert judges come from a wide variety of backgrounds in the wine industry and have experience and training in evaluating cold-climate wines. Judges participate in a blind tasting of the wines and award gold, silver and bronze medals, and best of show awards to the top red, white, and specialty wines and, for the first time in 2015, best of show rosé wine. The annual "Governor's Cup" is awarded to the favorite Minnesota wine of the internationally recognized wine experts on the judging panel. Medal and award winners will be posted online within two days of the competition and many medal winners will have a chance to be featured during the 2016 Cold Climate Conference in February. Online registration is open now. Reduced rate registration ends July 10, 2015. Final deadline for registration is August 7, 2015. Wines must be received by 4:30pm on August 12, 2015 to qualify.
