GRTA is a label of guarantee created by the State of Geneva in 2004. The canton is the owner and guarantor of the label which enables consumers to identify products from the Geneva region. The GRTA label is granted to many different kinds of fresh and processed products. The 4 underlying principles of the Genève Région Terre Avenir label are: Quality, Proximity, Traceability, Fairness. For exemple, more than 25,000 tons of vegetables a year are cultivated on some 300 hectares in Geneva.

AOP and IGP products are entered in the federal register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications respectively. This register protects the regional names or traditional designations of agricultural products, the quality and main characteristics of which are determined by their place of origin (wines are protected at cantonal level). If a name is registered, it may only be used by the producers of the geographical region designated. These producers must adhere to a strict list of specifications. The list of specifications is approved by the Federal Office of Agriculture, and regular checks by an independent body ensure that they are adhered to.

GENEVA WINES

Created in 1995 to promote Geneva’s farm products, OPAGE – the French acronym for the Office for the Promotion of Agricultural Products from Geneva – is a foundation under civil law. Its board is comprised of representatives of the canton, Agrigenève and the various agricultural sectors. Opage’s structure and means evolved after the 2004 law on promoting agriculture was voted in and the 2009 signature of a quadrennial service contract with the canton. In 2009, Opage moved to the new Maison du Terroir in Lully (Bernex), where among other activities it organizes courses on Geneva terroir products throughout the year.
