Winter can be a tough time for photography. The weather makes it harder to stay outdoors or at least harder to get motivated to go outdoors!!

You may want to stay indoors shooting pets, things around your home, or going to museums, galleries, etc. But every now and again Mother Nature comes to our rescue and gives us s a snowfall or an ice storm. Make certain you dress for the cold and watch for ice!

Shooting these images uses the same rules we’ve discussed before - rule of thirds, foreground objects, etc. The main diff erence with snow shots is getting the proper exposure.

All cameras are designed to give you an average exposure of the entire scene. This is why most of your images are properly exposed. A very bright snowy scene tricks you camera into thinking there is too much light, so the camera will cut back on exposure. This makees the snow

in your images look gray. If you know how to set your exposure compensation increase the exposure by 0.7 to brighten the snow.

A great way to enhance your images is using a polarizing fi lter, which cuts glare the same as polarizing sunglasses. Many photographers use this fi lter to make the sky in their images darker (and the clouds brighter) but this fi lter works wonderfully on snow. Removing the glare from the snow will help retain the detail in the bright areas.

That’s it for this month. As always you can email me with any photographic questions or problems at [email protected]. If you’d like to see some of my images visit www.KirmsPhotography.com if you’d like to see some of my work. Keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.

BOARD PRESIDENT MESSAGEWe are all grateful that 2021 has finally arrived. I think you

will all agree that 2020 is one for the history books. It is a great honor to be selected to serve as the Board Presi-

dent for 2021, and continue to work with the dedicated, caring people who make up the rest of the Board.

As I write this, I am optimistic, but recognize that we are still faced with uncertainty because of the Covid Pandemic and the restrictions imposed upon us by the Governor of NJ. We can only hope that things will improve, and we will be able to slowly get back to some form of normal. It certainly has been a crazy year. I certainly understand the frustration many people feel. There are so many wonderful, friendly people in this community, and I truly miss being able to gather and enjoy all the activities we normally have. We must stay positive that things will get better.

In the coming year I would like to see a return, when pos-sible, to a new normal, our meetings held in person, more input from the community, more attendance at functions, greater at-tendance at open Board meetings and continued improvements to our community.

To me, Winding Ways is a very special place, with special people. I look forward to the coming year and wish everyone a Healthy, Happy New Year.

MANAGER’S CORNERMaria Ingato

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. On behalf of your management team, I would like to thank the community as well as the Board of Trustees for

all of the warm wishes. We hope this is a happy and healthy New Year for everyone!

It has been so nice to see the holiday spirit alive and well while driving through the community! We all wish the spirit of the season could last all year but please remember that your decorations have to be taken down by January 9th. For those residents who can’t wait to have pine needle free floors, you can drop your Christmas trees off at the compost pile on Jackson Mills Road.

Within the next couple of months we will be sending out the Committee Selection notice. Once the Board liai-sons are assigned, they will pick a reorganization meeting date for their assigned committees, where the committee members will assign a chair, secretary, etc. All new committee members will receive a letter in the mail advising of this reorganization date and assigned liaison.

As we continue to fight this pandemic, please continue to follow the guidelines. Wear masks when outside. Keep social distancing. The main objective is to stay safe and healthy. I do believe the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view!

The Board of Trustees with guidance from the Associations Attorney continue to keep an eye on the restrictions and the case numbers. They will use these guidelines to help decide when it is safe to start the restricted re-opening of the clubhouse. The management office will continue to work from home and from the office but will be available to you by phone at all times (Mon-Fri, 9am to 4pm.) We will be sure to make ourselves available for issuing new car tags by appointment and maintaining architectural applications as well as all administrative duties.

Winter is upon us, so let’s stay prepared! Remember that there are 3 separate snow removal crews! The street plows, the driveway plows and the crew

that shovel the walkways. These 3 crews may not all be on your property at the same time and we ask you to please be patient. Please allow the crews to do their jobs and address all of your concerns to the management office. Re-member to keep ice melt products handy throughout the winter months, especially those with shaded driveways. The snow removal contractor is not responsible for removing icy remains from your driveways and walkways. You may want to stock up early to avoid any possible shortages of ice melt like we have had in past winters. Please remove all flower pots, solar lights, etc. from along driveway and walkway. The crews are not responsible for damages caused to items they cannot see under the snow when plowing or shoveling. We also remind you to please leave all snow stakes placed by LMs in place. Do NOT remove these. They give guidance to the plows necessary to avoid unnecessary damages!

Another reminder….Cars may not be parked on the streets of the community overnight! Clubhouse lot parking passes can be obtained from the management office.

OUR 2020 TITLESARE COMING IN 2021!

The Winding Ways Book Club 4th Thursday of each month

Hopefully, beginning April 22, 2021

Many of us were disappointed that we didn’t get to read and discuss the books we had chosen for 2020. Not to worry! The Ocean County library promises to supply us with “our” titles, although the order in which we receive them is still unknown. So plan on reading “The Art of Rac-ing in the Rain”, “Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane”, “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, “Pachinko” and several other books in the near future! While plans are still “fuzzy” (we know the first few months of 2021 will continue to be a Covid challenge), at the moment, the library hopes to know by March how book clubs will function. We still may be asked to pick up our own books --- hopefully, by then one person can pick them up for the group (as we have done in the past)!

Stay tuned. Jane will contact current members as she gets more information from the library. All are welcome to join us at any time during the year. Discussion leadership rotates among members of the group. Discussion guides are provided by the Ocean County library. For more informa-tion about our Book Club feel free to contact Jane Earle (732-928-2318).

“This company delivers on its promises!!! From our initial contact with our estimator, who was extremely knowledgeable in helping us with the scope and cost of our residing and roofi ng project, to the professionalism and meticulous attention to detail of the installation crew, we are thoroughly

pleased with our choice to go with All County Exteriors.”

HEALTH PROMOTION COMMITTEE

Fran NelsonNancy FerraroDee Anderson

New Year’s Greetings All!Hope everyone was able to safely enjoy the holidays.

We, by now, are all aware COVID-19 and flu season are dominating TV headlines. We need to continue follow-ing CDC guidelines by social distancing, wearing our masks, and frequent hand washing. Flu vaccinations are still recommended, and the COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon. Check with your private doctor for his recommendations.

February is national Heart Month. The awareness is about a heart healthy lifestyle to prevent heart disease. The term heart disease can be a catch-all phrase for a variety of conditions affecting the hearts structure and function. This can include heart attack, heart failure, or things affect-ing the arteries or valves. You can aim for a healthy heart by decreasing salt intake, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and eating healthy snacks.

Certainly exercise is a good option. Senior aerobics and yoga classes can be found on YouTube if too cold to walk outside. An idea may be to start a walking club. Challenge and compare daily steps by using an activity tracker to see the number of steps - that can be motivating!

‘Virtually’ keeping in touch with family and friends can decrease sadness or stress which might contribute to heart issues.

The good news - it won’t be long before it starts get-ting lighter outside again and the COVID vaccines should be readily available!

Stay warm everybody.

THE LIGHTER SIDE….Be Careful What You Wish For

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through, so he prayed: ‘Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through. So, please allow her body to switch with mine for a day.’ God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish. The next morning, sure enough the man awoke as a woman... he arose, cooked breakfast for his spouse, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches and drove them to school. Came home to pick up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, paid the bills and balanced the checkbook. He cleaned the cat’s litter box and bathed the dog... Then, it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home. Set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework. Then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing. At 4:30 he began peeling po-tatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper. After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids and put them to bed. At 9 P.M. he was ex-hausted and, though his daily chores weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love, which he managed to get through without a complaint. The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said: - ‘Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being able to stay home all day. Please, Oh! Please, let us trade back...!’ The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied: ‘My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. But you’ll have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night.’

SudokuANsWeRs ON PAGe 28

Sudoku requires no calculation or arithmetic skills. It is essentially a game of placing numbers in squares, using very simple rules of logic and deduction.

The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:

• Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order• Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order• Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9

Every Sudoku games begins with a number of squares already filled in, and the dif-ficulty of each game is largely a function of how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known, the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares correctly, options for the remaining squares are nar-rowed and it becomes easier to fill them in.

It’s in the .”2’s”2 ounces Balsamic vinegar 2 ounces Extra virgin olive oil2 ounces water2 tablespoon Dijon mustard2 crushed garlic clovesOptional:Pinch of saltPinch of pepperPinch of Italian seasoning

Directions::In glass measuring cup pour in 2 oz balsamic vinegar. Then pour in 2 oz water (to 4 oz mark). Then pour in 2 oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil ( to 6 oz mark). Add liquid mix-ture and shake well. Add desired seasoning. You can use immediately, but I like to leave overnight, strain out garlic (it gets bitter over time) and then use.Great for salads, used over chicken or when making Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil salad as topping instead of plain Vinegar. When shooting indoors everyone’s fi rst thought is to use a fl ash. While this is often a good move, shooting indoors without a fl ash can produce some very interesting images.

Using the natural light will enhance many images. Someone in the glow of a candle is a good example. Using a fl ash in this case will overpower the golden glow of the candle. This is also true of shooting an event on stage. A fl ash will eliminate the stage lights and create harsh shadows

Many of these shots will have a slow shutter speed, so you may need some additional camera support. If you don’t have a tripod, try leaning against something, placing your elbows on a fi rm support, and using the self timer.

As always you can send me an email at [email protected] with any photographic questions. Visit www.kirmsphotography.com if you’d like to see more of my images.

Keep shooting and improving your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
