Assessment of Earthern Dam at Lanka revealed more capacity to retain rain water

Level of Earthen Dam, LankaThe Civil Department conducted an assessment on the efficacy of the earthen dam constructed at Lankajan village, Lanka. As the assessment revealed the pond has more capacity to retain rain water, the bank of the pond was raised by two feet, which will result in increased availability of water for irrigation for the farming community.

Energy conservationPromotion of Solar Lanterns, NigohiAs an energy conservation initiative, about 196 households have been supported with Solar Lanterns at several villages at Belgaum in Karnataka and Nigohi in Uttar Pradesh. This helps in providing back-up of lighting facility. This will particularly help housewives during cooking, school-going children and the farmers in case they visit their farm lands in the night.

- 980 beneficiaries in Belgaum- CO2 emissions reduced to 40 tonnes a year

A field visit was conducted at the Talamanchapattinam Watershed Project at Kadapa by the District Development Manager and Assistant General Manager of NABARD. The initial CBP phase activities included 300 cum of field bunds, 2 stone outlets, and work in progress on development of sunken ponds. They also interacted with the Watershed

Committee on its on-going activities, the committee’s role and functioning. As part of the capacity building programme, the Watershed Committee members were sensitised on the on-going soil and water conservation measures. The Committee’s role, functioning and proposed initiatives taken on livelihood and agricultural enhancement productivity were also discussed.

Watershed Project, DalmiapuramAt the ongoing Kovandakurichy Watershed Project at Dalmiapuram, 2,239 cum of farm field bunds were completed. This created livelihood opportunities for landless villagers engaged in bunding works. Field bunding help retain moisture and in infiltration of rain water. Weeding works were also completed on 7,700 tree saplings, which created local employment for 15 females (without land) for 6 days.

Functional Literacy programmes were organised at Ariyalur and Dalmiapuram

Business Order for Tailoring Unit, DalmiapuramA Tailoring Unit at Dalmiapuram, which has been promoted by Dalmia Bharat Group Foundation (DBGF), has won a contract for stitching of school uniforms as part of the Tamil Nadu Government Project. The project will provide gainful employment to 8 women for about 2 months, helping them earn livelihood of about Rs 3,000 per month.

Health & Hygiene Programme, ariyalurKnowledge about personal hygiene is often found lacking among adolescent girls in rural areas. In view of this, a Health & Hygiene awareness session was organised for 70 adolescent girls from Aminabad village in Ariyalur. At the session, the girls were imparted information about the importance of maintaining personal and menstrual hygiene for a healthy living. The girls shared various queries which were answered successfully and also requested a repeat of such sessions at least 3-4 times in a year.

A Rally was organised for neighbouring villages in Umrongso district for selection of security guards, in association with Bombay Intelligence Security Agency (BIS). About 69 youth were verified as physically fit for the position of security guards, while two graduates have been selected for the position of Security Guard Supervisor. Of the total number, 19 are undergoing training and will be placed in various and government and private offices in Orissa. The

guards selected will earn a salary of Rs 8,300 a month plus, including free boarding and subsidised food.

Financial inclusion Programme, KadapaThe Kalajatha programme (traditional community plays) was organised at Kadapa in partnership with NABARD to generate awareness on financial inclusion, covering all the watershed villages. The Kalajatha team provided information on all the Government programmes, and those on bank insurance, Janadhan and SHG movement. With such plays being organised across seven villages, the initiative has reached more than 2,100 villagers

Functional Literacy ProgrammeFunctional literacy is the ability to read, write and calculate independently by an individual to live in a community. It is an essential requirement to manage the daily lives and employment tasks. At the Functional Literacy Program at Ariyalur, about 40 women successfully completed their first batch. The second round of 8 batches have commenced in 3 villages at Ariyalur and Dalmiapuram, in which 120 women have been enrolled.

Polio immunisation drives were held at Ramgarh, Jawaharpur

and Nigohi

government insurance scheme, KadapaAt Kadapa, 62 truck drivers from four neighbouring villages were facilitated for enrolment under the free Government Insurance scheme. This was a part of the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Board Scheme aimed at unorganised workers. Under the scheme, the insured will receive Rs 5 lakhs as coverage for accidental death and upto Rs 75000 for hospitalisation expenses. The school-going kids (Standard 8th and above, upto 2 children) will receive scholarship support of Rs 1,200 per annum. The processing fee of Rs 150 has been waived off by the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Board.

Road Safety Programme, KadapaA Road Safety Awareness Program was organised by DBGF, along with 20 employees from Dalmia Bharat Cement Limited and local Police Department at Jammalamadugu. This was aimed at promoting the recent High Court amendment on reinforcement of compulsory use of helmets by bikers and pillion riders, in addition to other road safety issues. The awareness program benefited 300 villagers from 6 villages.

malaria awareness, BelgaumThe DBGF team partnered with the Primary Health Centre at Yadwad, Belgaum to organise a Government-funded health awareness initiative focussed on Malaria. The programme was attended by nearly 27 Asha workers, 20 Anganwadi teachers and 113 villagers. Medical Officer, Dr. A. M. Pattar shared information on prevention and identification of the disease. A total of 160 beneficiaries were covered under the programme from three villages.

general Health check-up camps, UmrongsoPeople in neighbouring villages of Umrongso are deprived of basic health services due to the absence of a Primary Health Care Centre. DBGF organised two primary health check-up camps, covering 295 beneficiaries from 10 villages. At the camps, doctors and para-medical staff from Umrongso Civil Hospital and plant dispensary offered their services and distributed medicines free of cost. Blood samples of 40 villagers with malaria symptoms were collected and sent to the laboratory for testing.

Veterinary camp, KadapaWith the onset of monsoon, disease risks increase for the livestock. We promoted livestock development as additional livelihood options in the neighbouring communities. DBGF partnered with the Animal Husbandry Department and organised veterinary health camps for 358 milch animals at Nawabpet and Talamanchapattinam villages. During the camp, health concerns such as vaccination, de-worming, artificial insemination, gynaecology tests and treatment and baby health tests were addressed. Free medication was also identified and distributed for common livestock ailments.

Polio camps, Uttar PradeshTwo polio immunisation drives at Ramgarh, Jawaharpur and Nigohi saw the administration of polio drops to 2,145 children.

Tree saplings were planted at Kadapa as part of the World

Environment Day activities

World Environment DayWorld Environment Day was observed enthusiastically across our locations in South and North East. On this day, a series of awareness programmes were held. Employees from our plants, village panchayat, district authorities, school children and community participated in the events.

Programs organised:ariyalur:An interactive session was organised on Panchakaaviyam preparation, covering 23 farmers at Illupaiyur village. The technique is a proven organic method of pest control in agriculture which enriches soil health and friendly bacteria leads to increased yield. The liquid is made of milk, curd, ghee, country sugar, banana, cow dung, cow urine and tender coconut water. Farmers were quite satisfied with the training as they learnt many tips to save their crops from pests.

Students of the Ariyalur Government Industrial Training Institute planted 170 tree saplings which were sponsored by DBGF. Each student maintained 2-3 saplings by watering them regularly, which resulted in 99% survival of these saplings. The program was attended by senior government officials and the Dalmia executives.

Kadapa:The team at Kadapa partnered with the local community from Dugganapalli and Madhavpuram villages for plantation of 150 saplings by villagers. Special messages on water conservation were also shared with the local community.

Dalmiapuram:Quiz, extempore, slogan and poem writing competitions were held at Dalmiapuram. School students also planted 2015 tree saplings. Great enthusiasm and full-fledged participation from the employees made the event a huge success.

North East:Drawing and slogan writing competitions were held at various schools which saw enthusiastic participation by children. Prizes were distributed to children and they were also made aware of the importance of environment and judicial use of resources. School students were given saplings for plantation.

Uttar Pradesh:Around 330 villagers participated in the awareness sessions organised on the key theme of World Environment Day. Mango and Kadam trees were also planted with the help of volunteers from Dalmia Bharat Sugar.
