ForewordThe Renewable Energy Strategy, published in July 2009, setsout the pathway to 2020, outlining an action plan for meetingthe ambitious and challenging targets for generating a full15% of all our primary energy from renewable sources.

Wind power is set to continue to lead in the delivery of these objectives with acombination of both on- and off-shore assets expected to contribute more thantwo-thirds of the renewable electricity component. This is likely to see an additional21GW of wind energy capacity installed within the next 11years and a lot of thispotential sits in the North West of England.

Alongside such large growth comes big opportunities around 100 billion worth

of inward investment and the creation of up to half a million jobs but alsosome very big challenges. Whilst wind power is one of the most cost-effective andmature renewable electricity technologies, there remain some significant barriersto development at the scale required. Central to the task is the need to stimulatea supply chain that is able to meet the demands of such a rapidly growing industry.

The North West region offers a diverse and highly competent workforce, which isunderpinned with the experience and knowledge of more than a decade of bothon- and off-shore infrastructure developments across the region.

There is no doubt that the North West has the capability to rise to the challengeof the 2020 vision and I am pleased to introduce this Envirolink Northwestpublication. We hope it will assist you in locating and approaching businesspartners for the mutual benefit of both wind energy developers and the vitalsupply chain companies whose contribution is pivotal to achievement of ourshared objectives.
