    Wind is caused by huge convection currents in theEarth's atmosphere, driven by heat energy from theSun. This means as long as the sun shines, there will

    be wind.The moving air (wind has huge amountsof "inetic energy, and this can be transferred intoelectrical energy using wind turbines. The wind turns

    the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to agenerator and ma"es electricity. The electricity issent through transmission and distribution lines to asubstation, then on to homes, business and schools.

    Types of Wind Turbines

    2. VAWT (Vertial Axis Wind Turbines) have the main rotor shaft arranged

    vertically. The main advantage of thisarrangement is that the wind turbine does

    not need to be pointed into the wind. This isan advantage on sites where the winddirection is highly variable or has turbulentwinds.

    With a vertical ais, the generator and otherprimary components can be placed near theground, so the tower does not need tosupport it, also ma"es maintenance easier.
