Colleagues:

Once again, I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the Baylor URSA Scholars Week. Please find the time within your busy schedule to examine the breadth and depth of the research of our students. It is easy to see that Baylor Research is Making a Difference in the lives of our undergraduate and graduate students as well as around the world.

The achievements of the faculty and students represented in this eighth annual Scholars Week celebration are exemplary. As such, I encourage you to sample all of the scholarship on display, not just that inside your own discipline. The quality of each individual presentation once again demonstrates the monumental commitment provided by every Baylor faculty member and the direct impact this commitment has on our students.

Please also take the time to thank your faculty colleagues and students who have worked so hard to bring URSA to where it is today. Their unwavering enthusiasm promises a bright future for the undergraduate research experience at Baylor and is worthy of our praise!

As always, please accept my thanks for all you do on a daily basis for Baylor research.

I appreciate it and you.

Best regards,

Truell W. Hyde, Ph.D.Vice Provost for Research

Art Student Exhibition

March 26 – April 19

The Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University will feature the annual Baylor Art Student Exhibition beginning March 26th at 5:30pm and running through April 19th. Renowned Texas Sculptor, Danville Chadbourne, is the guest juror and will present awards to the students at the opening reception on March 26.

Danville Chadbourne was born in Bryan, Texas in 1949. He received a BFA in 1971 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas and an MFA in 1973 from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. After teaching studio art and art history at the college level for 17 years at various institutions, Chadbourne quit teaching in 1989 to devote himself full-time to his art. He has exhibited extensively at both state and national levels, including more than 100 one-person exhibitions. His work is included in numerous private and public collections. Chadbourne was featured in the November 2010 issue of Sculpture Magazine, and in the February 2010 and January 2006 issues of Ceramics Monthly. In 2007 Chadbourne held a residency at ArtSpace India, culminating with exhibitions in Calcutta and New Delhi. In 2013 he was the featured artist for the West Texas Triangle, a consortium of 5 museums, with simultaneous exhibitions at the Old Jail Art Center in Albany, the Grace Museum in Abilene, the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, the Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. In December, he will have a one-person exhibition featuring over 40 new works at the International Museum of Arts and Sciences in McAllen, Texas.

Notes

What is URSA?The Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Achievement (URSA) initiative at Baylor welcomes all undergraduates, from freshman to senior, to consider maximizing their education through a variety of research and scholarly activities found both within the classroom and beyond.

What is Scholars Week? Each year Baylor sponsors a series of events to celebrate undergraduate research and creativity. In mid-spring Baylor dedicates an entire week to undergraduate scholarly presentation. Students that have completed creative works or conducted research within the past year are encouraged to present their work. The first two days of Scholars Week are dedicated to platform presentations where students representing a cross-section of academic disciplines share their work. Additionally, posters are displayed at the Baylor Sciences Building for the entire week. Academic departments give awards for the best research designs and presentations, including outstanding individual and group presentations. Students who are not involved in presentations are encouraged to attend Scholars Week and learn about the variety of opportunities available to them.
