Black Pot Cook-Off ~ This Saturday by Linda Montgomery
Beat the heat of the valley and come to Wilsonia and enjoy a day in the shade to cook or to watch the Black Pot cookers. The date is this Saturday, June 15th. This year the event will be held between Chuck and Penny Burgin's and Lynn and Chad Fjeld’s cabins on Hazel Ln just north of Laurel - directions will be posted. We have moved the event in order to provide more shade and a more level place to cook. If the day is warm… you will thank us.
Cooking begins at 2pm; dinner will be served at 6pm. Anyone and everyone is invited. If you don't cook, please bring a small salad to complete the meal. Bring your own plates, service and drinks.
Entry fees this year are $5 for cooks or $1 to eat and sample the wonderful dishes. Prizes will be awarded for 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in both divisions: main dishes and desserts. Ribbons will be awarded for 1st through 5th place in each division. Prizes have been donated by Gail Kennedy and Cindy Telesco. Max Montgomery is donating a redwood plaque that has
names of past winners and will have any future winners. Max has also handcrafted a cedar bench (shown here in a workshop photo) to be sold in a silent auction, with the proceeds going to the Wilsonia Historic District. Hope you all come by to enjoy some music, watch, learn, eat and enjoy. The day is becoming a favorite in our Wilsonia summers. See you there!
Come See and Smell the Wildflowers! WHDT Wildflower Walk and Program
Come to the Clubhouse at 7:30 pm on Thursday, July 4th to see a program about the wildflowers of Wilsonia and the surrounding park. Steve Stocking, the author and presenter, is a long-time Wilsonia resident. A fourth edition of his “Wildflowers of Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks” is just out! He hopes to have copies of the new edition to sell and sign. On the next day, Friday, July 5th, Steve will lead a morning walk starting at 10am at the Clubhouse to see and smell the flowers of the meadows and forests of Wilsonia. Come join him for this leisurely and informative walk.
Silent Auction Saturday July, 6th 1- 8 pm
Goods, Crafts and Food needed!
Please bring your donated auction items to the Clubhouse on weekends through July 5th, or contact Uschi Hamm at 559-287-4803 or Sheri Parkinson at 559-259-5891 for other arrangements. We are asking for nice, new or very gently used items only, please (this is not a white elephant or yard sale). Do you have a service to offer? How about donating a Gift Certificate? Thanks to all who donate to and participate in this an-nual fundraising effort. Last years auction raised $1915. Can we top that??
WHDT Update Nothing new to report yet… the WHDT is still awaiting a response from the NPS regarding the letter and comments submitted for the E.A. on the 12 NPS owned cabins. The NPS has not yet announced a decision about the plan for those cabins. The WHDT hopes to schedule a meeting with interim NPS Superintendent Woodie Smeck. The WHDT Board will hold a meeting on Saturday, July 6th at 1pm at the Collin cabin.
Can you be contacted in case of Emergency??? Have you disconnected your
cabin phone? Do you have a cell phone that works at your cabin?
There is NEW information about the reverse 911 system.
PLEASE read the insert and respond!

Road Signs Fundraiser and Project The printed road signs have arrived and construction of posts and arms will begin soon. Installation of the signs is planned for this summer. To date, we have received $4,340 in donations and pledges. If you have previously pledged to sponsor a sign, please send in your donation. Our goal is to reach $4500 as the projected cost for the project is $100 per sign for each of the 45 sign locations. It is not too late to donate to the project! If you would like to sponsor a sign for $100 or donate any amount towards the project you may send donations to the address on the back page. Thank You!
Rubber Duck Race Thanks to Sara DeJager for cleaning out the creek race- way and for providing the prizes for the annual running of the ducks on Memorial Day Sunday. All the young contest-ants came away with prizes, big smiles and souvenir ducks. One was heard saying “I can’t wait to come here next year for this!” As one spectator commented, all these smiles and fun... without any electronics.
June is Yard Clean-up Month Mild Winter = High Fire Danger
WVI asks you to set July 1st each year as the target date for having your property cleared of fallen branches and pine needles, and for creating a fire safe perimeter around your cabin and other buildings. Once again, this year there will be open access to the Park Dump every weekend in June for disposal of your natural yard waste. On weekdays, and at all other times the rest of the year, you may gain access to the dump by signing out a key at the NPS Visitor Center.
**IMPORTANT** No plastic trash bags are allowed at the dump! The only materials allowed in the dump are natural yard waste - pine needles and branches. No lumber, household trash or discards of any kind are allowed. No plastic bags! Please make an effort to be in Wilsonia sometime during the month of June to clean your yard and make your cabin and our community FIRE SAFE!
PLEASE use great caution when having a campfire, using the barbecue or any other open flames!
Have a source of water and/or fire extinguisher close by at all times. One small mishap could cause disaster for our
Wilsonia and the surrounding area. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Trek to the Ishi Giant On July 13th, Wilsonians David Doyle and Ty Parkinson will be leading a trek to the Ishi Giant. The Ishi Giant, discovered in 1990, is located in the Kennedy Grove of Giant Sequoias in Kings Canyon National Park. The tree’s base diameter rivals that of the General Sherman tree, and by mass, it ranks as the 13th largest of the Giant Sequoias. The Ishi Giant is characterized by its massive base, flying buttresses and considerable burn scarring. Since the tree is remote and not accessible by trail, the hike is geared for the experienced and hearty mountaineer. More information about the meeting time, place and the particulars of the hike will follow online (Facebook and webpage) and will be posted on the bulletin board.
WELCOME to new Wilsonia cabin owners:
