when sewing corners, sometimes it can be difficult to get them to lay flat. If you sew around your pieces of fabric and then trim the ends as shown in the photos, you’ll have a sharper corner. Happy sewing!

Please send in your nominees for Wonder Club Woman to Shelly Barnes. Submissions are due along with Newsletter information by the middle of April. One nomination per club per quarter, please. Photo and description

is required.

Myra Malone is submitted by the Commerce Club President, Car-rie Shehane as their Wonder Club Woman. “Myra is the “First Fruit” the Bible talks about. She is an amazing seamstress, cook, and de-votional leader. She strengthens our club each month with her posi-tive attitude and meaningful devotions. I feel like I am a better person just by knowing her. If you want an example of a Titus 2 and Prov-erbs 31 woman – she is it. She builds up her family, her church, and her friends. She is an asset to our club and Wilson County.”

Cernovia (BeBe) Burns is a member of the Tucker’s Crossroads FCE Club and has been submitted by President, Regina McCathern. . She is a very active member. She has volunteered her time with church, FCE and the Wilson County Fair. She started the pillow cases project for the Ronald McDonald House. She has helped with the Angel Gowns, the Cancer Pillows, and Preemie Quilts. She al-so took us on a guided tour to the Amish Country. She prepares all the food for the Fall Bazaar. She’s the pie woman in the community. But most of all, in her spare time, she enjoys fishing with her husband Raymond.

Linda Partlow is a member of the Cedar Hill FCE Club and has been submitted by President, Georgia Franklin. She has been cho-sen as their Wonder Club Women for this newsletter. Linda says, “It is remarkable what this club has done for me. The faith they have put into my life. Thank you for this opportunity. The friendships that come into our lives at this time in our lives is real. The positive ener-gy that brings to me feeling of acceptance.” Linda was the leader of the Books from Birth Imagination Dinner Committee for the club last year where we won “Most Whimsical” award. She is also in charge

this year. She is our Vice President and Georgia calls her the Energizer Bunny! Linda’s favorite saying is “She believed she could, so she did!”

Hello fce Friends,

I am a “Chicken Soup” book fan. I love to read inspirational stories about people who have over-come obstacles in their lives whether they be great or small. On a day when I may not be as positive as I should be, I can reflect on these sto-ries and guess what…I can alter my attitude to handle the stresses of the day.

The following story is not a “Chicken Soup” story but one I often think about in terms of initiative. We often think we possess no power or talent to change a situation but if we practice the power of initiative we just might make a difference.

“In ancient times, a king had his men place a boulder on a roadway. He then hid in the bushes, and watched to see if anyone would move the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers passed by and simply walked around it.

Many people blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone removed.

One day, a peasant came along carrying vegeta-bles. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the way. After much pushing and straining, he finally managed.

After the peasant went back to pick up his vege-tables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King explaining that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the road.” (Anonymous)

Often when a task or “boulder” is at hand, initia-tive seems to be in short supply. It is easier to “walk around it than move it.” We have many op-portunities to “make a difference” in things in our lives. I challenge you to think about ways you can “move the boulder” and reap the rewards of your initiative and involvement.

I applaud the many fce members that champion a cause and “move boulders” on a regular basis. Making “Angel Gowns”, Premie Quilts” serving as leader in your organization, serving as a Wilson County Fair volunteer, baking for the desert auc-tion that benefits 4-H youth, serving in your churches, serving in your communities, serving in your clubs and serving your friends and neigh-bors when they need help. These are definitely examples of initiative and caring in action. My hat is off to all of you.

Best regards, Ruth

Wilson County Master Gardener Help-Line Certified Master Gardeners will be at the Extension office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 11am. They may also be reached by calling 615-444-9584 and asking for the Master Gardener Help-Line or via email at [email protected]. This is a great resource for you! They can help with all your gardening questions!

Holman’s Horticulture As we start thinking more about spring time and what we can do in the garden, now is the time to implement that plan into action. Typically warm season vegetables need to be started anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks before you want to plant them outside. We rec-ommend that warm season vegetables be transplanted around April 15, but last year we had a frost on April 17. Be sure to watch the weather when you were planting things outside that are very frost sensitive. Right now is an acceptable time to start planting those cool season vegetables outside including lettuce, spinach, greens, and all the cole crops. If we get below 20°, some of these might be affected. It is always a good plan to have a frost cloth or an old sheet to use to cover these vegetables from a hard frost. Never use plastic when protecting plants from a frost. This will create a greenhouse type environment and will heat up too quick-ly and could send those small plants into flower. As always if you have any gardening question in Wilson County feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 615-444-9584.

We asked Scott West, husband of Penny West-TXR FCE Club and owner of Cedar City Diesel to share an important tip to help maintain your vehicle. Scott says we need to check our tire pressure each month. This will help insure optimum fuel mileage and extend the life of your tires. Scott wants you to know that you can get this done pretty much anywhere that services vehicles. And, you can even do it yourself too!
