Sermon Series: Finding the Good: The Quest for Christian Values in the 21st Century

O Christ, the risen One, ascended into heaven, yet closer than our own breath, draw us into your presence. Be near to us – near to our praises, our prayers, our words,

our songs; near to our wonderings, our tentative answers, our hidden doubts, our deepest affirmations. Be near to us, risen Lord. Amen.

*HYMN 139 red book PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

*CALL TO WORSHIP Lift up your voices, you people of God! Raise up your voices in songs of praise! Let us sing praises to the Holy One! Joyfully, let us celebrate the God of Grace!

*OPENING PRAYER Powerful God, from the very beginning you blessed creation. You have loved

and shielded your people through all joys and trials of life. We come to you this day, rejoicing in the many blessings you have given to us.

We open our hearts again to hear your word for us and to gather strength and joy for service in your world. Be with us and bless us again,

we pray. Amen.

PRAYERS

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin

and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

CONFESSION AND PARDON Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will,

we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear the good news: While we were yet sinners, God sent Jesus into the world where he lived among us, died as one of us, and rose from death to life. That proves

God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen.

*DOXOLOGY (#93 red book) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

TAKING THE BREAD AND CUP

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

(The minister continues this prayer of thanksgiving, concluding:)

And so, with your people on earth And all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full – full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

(The minister continues the prayer, recalling the institution of the Lord’s Supper, concluding:)

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever.

Amen, amen, amen, amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Youth

The Village On the third Sunday of every month from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., you are invited to attend “The Village,” a new way to worship with your friends and family. We are moving downstairs to the more informal and comfortable space of the Youth Center where we can worship God in a more relaxed manner. Our next Village is Sunday, February 18, and we will be preparing for the season of Lent by learning about fasting and feasting. Is fasting just about not eating? Is feasting about stuffing our faces with our favorite food? Can you fast and feast on other things? Maybe, but are you sure? Come to The Village and learn about Lenten challenges that will help you grow closer to God and deeper in your faith. Questions? Contact Cindy Banek, Andy Glascott or Anthony Williams (229-1771).

We will also do some celebrating around Valentines’ Day as well as serve pancakes for dinner to observe Shrove Tuesday. Wow – we will be busy – and messy with activities, games and Celebration Time. Senior Pastor’s Midweek Bible Study for Lent and Sermon Series

During the six weeks of Lent, we will study What Makes a Hero? The Death-Defying Ministry of Jesus, by Matt Rawle. In our study we will look at how we can draw important truths from our encounters with heroes—both real-life and fictional—and understand how Jesus redefines the entire concept of hero through his life, ministry, and death. Our Bible study will be held on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) and repeated on Thursday (10:30 a.m.), beginning February 21/22. We will examine the following themes: 1. Good, Evil, and God 2. Right, Wrong, and Holy 3. Us, Them, and the Body of Christ

4. Have, Have-Not, and the Kingdom of God 5. Old, New, and Covenant 6. Life, Death, and Resurrection

Pastor Bill and Pastor Meghan will preach a sermon series following the same topics beginning Sunday, February 18 and concluding with Easter on Sunday, April 1.

Lazarus Awakening Bible Study Facilitator: Gwen Hamrick

Do you feel trapped in a tomb of regret, doubt, or fear? Are you tripped up by patterns and behaviors you need to leave behind? Just as Jesus called Lazarus from his tomb of death and darkness, He is calling you to come out of the false beliefs and habits that keep you from receiving His unconditional love. He is calling you to know deep in your spirit that God not only loves the world – He loves you unconditionally. It is time to “come forth!” Through this 7-week Lenten Bible small-group study we will join author Joanna Weaver as she draws us deeper into the historical and spiritual truths we learn from the story of Lazarus: perhaps Jesus’s “BFF” called out from death into the life-giving arms of Jesus. Individual study will include readings and brief written reflections in preparation for each week’s lesson. The study will begin February 14, Ash Wednesday, and continue each Wednesday thru March 28, from 6-7:00 p.m. Study books are available for purchase from Cindy Banek and you may register by calling the church office (229-1771).

Retiring Joe Meadows has retired as the WUMC Business Administrator. His last official day of work was January 30. However, he plans to come in from time to time in February to continue working on the transition with Nethea Calloway, our current Bookkeeper, who will be taking over Joe’s job. Traditionally, members have wanted

to express their appreciation to a valued staff member with a contribution to a love gift. Joe has given us more than seven years of service at WUMC.

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee asks that donations for the love offering be sent to the church office, addressed to the attention of Nethea Calloway, by February 4.
