structure evaluations and surveys through the preparation of historic preservation plans and design

guidelines. Major contributions include the preparation of the National Trust damage assessment

report for historic properties affected by Hurricanes Hugo (1989) and Marilyn (1995), county-

wide surveys in Georgia and North Carolina, and an award-winning historic preservation manual

for the historic town of Madison, Georgia.

Additional Professional Experience

Extensive research experience in anthropology, archaeology, and architectural history. Recognized as a leading

authority in historic preservation survey and documentation techniques and in the history of Caribbean and Pacific

architecture. Archaeological and historic structures survey experience in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina,

Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Hawaiì, and numerous Caribbean and Pacific

islands. Frequent study tour leader for the Smithsonian Institution, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the

Honolulu Academy of Arts and the U.S. State Department, including cultural tours of Caribbean, the eastern

seaboard and lecture tours in the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

Increasingly serves as a consultant to international organizations in Southeast Asia, including projects with the

World Monuments Fund and UNESCO.

restoration at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center in Madison, Georgia. In 1991, lectured on the Secretary of the

Interior's "Standards for Historic Preservation Projects" throughout Georgia as part of the Georgia's Living Places

program, sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources. Regular summer lecturer at the University of

Florida's Preservation Institute's Caribbean program and for the Pacific Islands Institute's Elderhostel Program,

Honolulu, Hawaiì.

Presently serves as an occasional architectural critic for the Honolulu Advertiser, the principal state newspaper.

Articles range from educational pieces on historic houses to reviews of new buildings.

Also, a contributor to and founding member of the newly established Center for Khmer Studies, Siem Reap,

Cambodia, and a consultant to UNESCO at Luang Prabang, Laos.
