OverviewJohn Holcomb and his family have a vision. Inspired by their friends who dream about having “a piece of land with a few cows and becoming a rancher,” why not take their pristine 5,400 acres in Okeechobee, Florida and make that dream come true for those who truly want a no-hassle cowboy lifestyle?

Willaway Ranch is not just a place to live; it’s a lifestyle. You won’t just be neighbors; you will be partners. Instead of dividing up the land in the traditional sense to create mini-rachettes that are individually owned and operated, Willaway Ranch will give investors an undivided share of the ranch, cattle and equipment, and will be managed and maintained by professional ranchers 24/7. Residents will select from a variety of floor plans for their own home site with rustic luxury amenities just steps away. The ranch will provide a party barn for large events, rifle-pistol and archery ranges, a private air strip, untouched hammocks, abundant wildlife, and of course, horses and cattle.

Our thoughts and our conversations are consumed with politics, the economy, uncertainty about various global crises and assaults at home. We long for a simpler life, and the senses of security and safety that come along with that lifestyle.

Believe it or not, 90% of the cattle herds in the United States are 100 head or less, putting Willaway Ranch’s size in the top 2 to 4% in the nation. With more than 1,200 head of cattle, Willaway Ranch is in the upper echelon of cattle ranching operations. It takes a long time to build a reputation for raising quality cattle and delivering large numbers of consistent calves, yet Willaway Ranch has become known as one of the best in the industry.

Over the past two decades, the Holcomb family has grown the cattle operations at Willaway Ranch to be what they are today, traveling out of state annually to purchase high-quality bulls that possess desirable traits. The herd at Willaway Ranch is mostly comprised of Black Brangus cattle, which are well adapted to the Florida environment, make excellent mothers, and produce top-quality beef.

While many people may reflect upon cattle ranching and other agricultural pursuits as irrelevant or nonessential to their way of life, the truth remains that approximately 95 percent of the country’s population is fed by the other 5 percent who work in agriculture.

Florida actually serves as one of the country’s leaders in cattle ranching. In fact, cattle were first introduced to the entire North American continent in Florida in 1521 by Juan Ponce de Leon. And currently, the largest single brood cow herd in the United States is located in Florida. So it should come as no surprise that it is vitally important to continue to nurture and maintain the viability of Florida’s cattle industry. Ranching operations such as the one at Willaway Ranch are as important today as they were 100 years ago, if not more so.

About UsThe Holcomb family has been involved in development, cattle ranching and other agricultural pursuits for more than 30 years. Owner, John Holcomb was born and raised in Central Florida in a family with strong ties to development and Florida agriculture. There he met his wife Kim and began his career as a cattle rancher in the late 70s, and added real estate construction and development to his repertoire in 1980. John’s last project was with his father-in-law and brother-in-law building a 3,000-homesite community on Treasure Coast that includes four championship golf courses that are now the winter home of the PGA. He also ran his family’s large-scale citrus operation from 1984 through 2006. In 2002, John opened the family’s sod division and has run it since that time.

All three of the Holcomb children grew up involved in the cattle business, and have become involved in the operations of Willaway Ranch during the past 15 years. Will Holcomb graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, and has amassed more than 20 years of experience in cattle ranching. He has managed Willaway Ranch for 14 years. Cody Holcomb also works on the ranch, following a career spent on the water as a successful boat captain. Hallie Holcomb Hegedus has worked on the ranch and in the sod division for the past seven years. All three showed cattle and cutting horses during their high school years. All three show a great appreciation for agriculture and the ranching business.
