OVERVIEW LETTERTo the Pastoral Search Committee of Greenforest Community Baptist Church:

It is with great joy and honor that I write to you in reference to the recently posted Senior Pastor search announcement. To learn that my home church is seeking its next spiritual leader came as a welcomed surprise. The thought of being able to give back to a place that has given so much to me is both humbling and exciting.

As I prayerfully and carefully considered this ministry opportunity, it became clear to me that this was more than just another career move. For me, this is a divine assignment, a mandate and call to serve THESE people and THIS community. I have enclosed a comprehensive resume which details my extensive education, experience, and accomplishments both ministerial and in the marketplace. I have also included letters of recommendation from leaders in the community in which I serve. I am certain that this information will demonstrate that I am fully capable and qualified to fulfill this position.

However, it is my desire that you know my heart in applying for the position of Senior Pastor of Greenforest Community Baptist Church. Early in my young adult life I understood and embraced my collective call to pastor a congregation, create positive sustaining change within a community, and educate and empower others to lead. God chose Greenforest Community Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor McCalep, to lay the foundation required for me to fulfill my mission.

A lot has happened since Greenforest. I have served as a community chaplain for Dekalb County and the City of Newport News. I have served as a Youth Pastor and Minister of evangelism. I have served as the Head Master of New Birth Christian Academy. Currently, I serve as Senior Pastor of New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia and hold leadership offices in various community organizations. Yet, in all of this, I received my start at Greenforest.

It is my prayer that the enclosed packet will be helpful in providing you with information to evaluate my qualifications as a candidate. If you need any additional information, please feel free to contact me at the phone number or address listed below. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Willard Maxwell, Jr. Willard Maxwell, Jr. Enclosure

Prior to moving to Newport News, VA, Pastor Maxwell had a long successful career in the Atlanta Metropolitan school system as an educator, administrator, and principal. While in the educational system, he remained faithful to his local church and ministry. He served diligently as Youth Pastor, Evangelism Coordinator, and Minister of Economic Empowerment and Community Development at Greenforest Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA and Youth Pastor and Evangelism Coordinator at Good Hope Baptist Church in August, GA. During his time as an evangelism coordinator, he focused his energy on the prison ministry and community organization. In fact, while at Greenforest he served as the “live in” Resident Community Pastor of a low economic housing complex and established relationships with the residents of the community, and local law enforcement. As a result, the community saw a decrease in car thefts, drugs, and violent crimes.

Although his residence changed his passion to impact the lives of children is still apparent through his partnership with Newport News Public Schools to assist with a mentoring program designed to encourage good decision making skills and produce positive outcomes. Pastor Maxwell serves on Senator John Miller’s Educational Advisory Committee, is the Director of Christian Education of The Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, serves on the executive board of the Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center as the chair of the Community Relations Committee, and the 2nd Vice President of the Peninsula Pastors Council. Pastor Maxwell is also an entrepreneur and business owner. In addition to preaching and teaching, he holds a real estate broker’s license and uses his business and leadership skills to conduct workshops for churches and communities in the area of real estate investing, financial management, and community and economic development. He is using his business skills and networking to connect with businesses, business owners, and community leaders in the Newport News area. Pastor Maxwell serves as a volunteer chaplain for the Newport News Police Department to ensure that a spiritual presence has a solid foundation in our neighborhoods.

As a Silver Lifetime Member of the NAACP, he has been offered opportunities to work with and partner with organizations in the local and regional area(s) that serve the community. As a respected musician and gospel comedian, he is often called upon to use his gifts of music and comedy at churches, conventions, and ministry events. He is an effective leader and understands that ministry is about serving others. Pastor Maxwell has embraced his call to Pastor with the focus, dedication and commitment necessary to affect a dynamic and earth shattering change in the world.

With the limited insight I have to the current state of affairs at Greenforest Community Baptist Church, I propose the following as short-term growth strategies:

1. Identify Gaps – I believe and support wholeheartedly the concept of the Collective IQ—all of us are smarter than any of us. With this being said, I will first conduct a temperature check to determine the current state of the church and mindset of its leaders. One way I propose doing this would be by surveying the:

a. Leaders of Greenforest Community Baptist Church,b. Key congregational members of Greenforest Community Baptist Church, and c. Strategic partners and community influencers connected to Greenforest Community Baptist Church.

2. Bridge the Gaps – I have found that with change comes the need for buy-in and commitment from key stakeholders. The second phase of my church growth strategy will include establishing and rebuilding trust between:

a. The leadership and the people,b. New members and tenured members, c. Young adults and senior saints, andd. Community supporters of Greenforest (Pastors, clergy, community leaders, and business owners.)

3. Move Forward with the Main Thing – By collaborating with members of the leadership team, my third phase of the short-term church growth strategy will include:

a. Identifying the key barriers to growth,b. Developing a measurable plan for overcoming these barriers (to include key performance indicators, milestones, due dates and responsible parties), and c. Executing a step-by-step action plan.

My long term growth strategy for Greenforest Community Baptist Church will include:

1. Relaunch MinistryFest – I believe that a church solely inward-focused is a church who will soon die. Greenforest has an established legacy of being ministry-minded. In order to build a church you must first build its people. MinistryFest is a flagship program started by Pastor McCalep geared toward building the people of Greenforest. Launching this initiative will be a great start in the right direction.

2. Re-open the Early Learning Center (ELC) – By leveraging this state of the art early childhood educational program and facility, Greenforest will build awareness and engagement among members of the community who may not have otherwise expressed an affiliation with Greenforest Community Baptist Church.

3.Revitalize Greenforest-McCalep Christian Academy – Education has always been at the pinnacle of the success of Greenforest Community Baptist Church. GMCA has a rich heritage among the African American community being the first African American school to be accredited by SACS. With the support of key stakeholders and strategic partnerships, I will devise a strategy to secure funding and ample resources which can be leveraged to revitalize the community surrounding Greenforest and position GMCA as a premier educational source for the community.
