Veer munshi’s installation to take viewers on Kashmir tour
Haroon Mirani
Srinagar, Sep 17: Noted artist Veer Munshi’s latest installation is set to take view-
ers inside a large chamber wherein they will experience the ground situation in Kash-mir confronting it from 2010 to 2016.
The installation titled Kashmir Bohraan, Will There Be Redemption?, will be exhib-ited to public in next couple of months. “I have been working
on this project for the last six years. As an artist we are deeply saddened by what is happening in Kashmir and through art I am trying to
express myself,” said Munshi who was born and brought up in Kashmir. Working at his Gurgaon studio, Munshi said that a single painting won’t be able to depict greater human trag-edy in Kashmir and that is why he had to think big. When completed
Kashmir Bohraan would be a
large scale installation con-verted in a chamber 35ft X15ft X 30ft X 15ft X 9ft. “Here the viewers can walk in and may feel claustrophobic by the stark images of crises painted in acrylic on handmade paper pasted on board panels 5/7 ft each,” said Munshi. Most of the Images
according to Munshi are the reflections of his youth in Kashmir where
at young age he used to play or watch football. “Sadly the chil-dren of same age have become victim of con-
flict today,” said Munshi who is
deeply attached to Kashmir. There
is also a video run-ning in a loop inside the
chamber to depict multiple tragedies facing Kashmir.
“An environment that draws the viewer into the simula-tion of a conflict zone, ‘The Chamber’ has evolved organ-ically from my paintings about the transmogrification of everyday life through civil strife, terror and endemic violence,” said Munshi. The images and visuals included in the art work include people who lost eyes to pellet injuries, curfew, killings and other rights violations right from 2010. “No matter we are far off from Kashmir and we have achieved everything, but at the end of the day when we dream it is same old beloved house and surroundings in Kashmir,” said Munshi. “We too are pained and want end to people sufferings but unfortunately tragedies coming in succession. There seems to be no serious effort to resolve it. When you don’t resolve the tragedies occurring in 1990, 2008 or 2010 then obviously 2016 will happen.”

is mulling the review of facili-ties, including security pro-
vided to separatists. “ I n c o n s u l t a t i o n w i t h c e n t r a l g o v e r n m e n t , w e are reviewing the facilities being provided to Kashmir separatists,” Dr Singh told reporters after addressing BJP’s training workshop at Katra. He added that the Govern-ment is taking tough posture against anti-national elements and “what is needed to be done will be done in best interest of the state and country”.
On the situation in Kash-mir, Dr Singh said govern-ment has taken appropriate step to restore peace in the valley. “Education of youth is affected due to hartals and unrest. State government has decided to reopen schools and college in valley at the earli-est,” he said. He, however added that state government has taken very tough stand on stone pelters and decided to take
stern action against the youth involved in pelting. On resignation of parlia-mentarian Tariq Ahmed Karra from PDP, BJP’s ally in state, Singh said that the resignation of Karra is internal matter of PDP “In past too, Karra openly expressed disagreement with PDP. It’s purely their internal matter. It doesn’t affect the alli-ance government in the state,” he said. On Congress and PDP’s alli-
ance in Kargil for Hill Develop-ment Council, Singh said, this is a minor development and will not affect PDP-BJP alliance in the state “ W e ( P D P - B J P ) h a v e talked about all recent politi-cal development in the state and after deliberations with PDP leadership I would like to assure people that this g o v e r n m e n t w i l l r e m a i n intact in Jammu and Kash-mir and complete term,” he said.
