Our Annual Gymkhana took place In our sweet country town at the Ravensthorpe Equestrian Club over the weekend, where people that were competing came from Albany, Esperance, outer areas and our locals.

It was amazing to see them all at Yummylicious Candy Shack over the 2 days having photos taken with their beautiful horses.

Such a lovely group of ladies and children supporting all our local businesses.

It looked very much like Ravensthorpe Outback when they arrived for ice-cream and goodies at the Local Candy shop. Thank-you for loving our Big Lollipop.

■ From page 12nd prize in the adult category was won by Amy Cutler for her photograph of Starflowers, Calytrix fraseri. Dan commented “I just love a backlit image. And flare… what a way to warm a scene. Excellent use of both techniques here, well done.” Amy won $50 cash and a 1TB portable hard drive. The winner of the adult category was a photo of a White Spider Orchid, Caladenia longicauda sub crassa, by Tegan Smith. “A spider on a spider. This kind of detail is incredibly difficult to capture, the photographer has done exceptionally well. Great use of backlight to saturate the flower’s natural colour too,” said Dan. Tegan won $100 cash and a 50cm x 40cm canvas print of her photograph. There were also several highly commended prize winners in both the junior and adult categories. The competition has been a great success again this year with some absolutely stunning images of our beautiful wildflowers. Congratulations to all those who entered and we look forward to your support again next year. The Hopetoun Community Resource Centre would like to thank Dan Paris, The Shire of Ravensthorpe and the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show for supporting our 2019 Wildflower Photography Competition. The photographs will remain on display at the Hopetoun CRC for a few more weeks, if you haven’t already seen it, please take the time to go and have a look. Thank you

Word of the Dayamaranthine adjective | am-uh-RANTH-un

Definition:1 a : of or relating to an amaranth b : undying2 : of a pinkish or rosy red color

Did You Know? Long ago poets conceived of a flower that did not fade and christened it amaranth. The appellation is rooted in the Greek word amarantos, meaning “immortal” or “unfading,” and amarantus, the Latin name of a flower (probably Celosia cristata). The word amaranthine emerged as an adjective of the imaginary flower and subsequently of anything possessing its undying quality. Amaranth also names a real plant (genus Amaranthus), an herb that some consider a weed and others grow for its colorful leaves and spikes of flowers.

■ ST JOHN AMBULANCE

One of Hopetoun’s long serving Volunteer Ambulance Officers was recognised for her hard work at the St John Ambulance State Conference in late August.

Each year, the State Conference is a much-anticipated event on the St John calendar as an opportunity for volunteers and staff from across the state to get together and learn about the latest advances in ambulance care, listen to riveting and educational guest speakers and explore all the facets of the organisation in a showcase of stalls and interactive exhibits.

Holly Wood is a Volunteer Development Officer with St John Ambulance and prominent personality in the district. By day, many will know Holly as their local hairdresser in her salon on Maitland St but this year, St John Ambulance recognized the work that Holly puts into the community as a VDO as a part of their Volunteer Showcase.

Her role as VDO is to train her fellow Ambulance Officers and new recruits as a mentor, counting on her many years of experience with the ambulance service. You will find Holly front and centre at every fortnightly training night in the Hopetoun Emergency Services shared facility, delivering a high level of clinical and practical training and mentoring.

Hopetoun is fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable trainer in Holly, who also serves as Vice Chair of the management committee. Her countless hours of work do not go unnoticed by her fellow volunteers and it was tremendous to see St John

Local volunteer recognisedAmbulance also recognise such people in their ranks.

Ambulance services in regional Western Australia are run solely by volunteers who train under the watchful tutor of their VDO’s to deliver a high-quality service to towns such as Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe.

There are many other volunteers who work very hard to maintain the level of care the community deserves, but they cannot do it by themselves.

Volunteering with St John Ambulance is rewarding, and you will be provided with the skills and experience you need to make a difference in your life and your friends lives. Consider contributing to the safety and wellbeing of your community today and visit http://www.stjohnchangelives.com.au today, or contact your local VDO’s to find out more:

■ HOPETOUN WILDFLOWER AND HERITAGE WALK

The weather was very kind for our first Hopetoun Wildflower and Heritage Walk, which will hopefully become an annual event during wildflower season.

Five people joined me for the walk, which began with a brief history of the Hopetoun settlement and the railway, then we set off along the Heritage Walk Trail to see what we could find.

All but one of the group were visitors to the area, so most of the flowers were new to the majority. I expressed that although they appeared impressed with what they were seeing, this year’s drought has left the bush very stressed and thus the usual magnificent display of abundant flowers and colour could not be seen.

“Imagine waves of colour all though here” and “Imagine a mass of red Lechenaultia along this verge” were some phrases I used to describe the normal array.

Despite this, were still plenty of beauties to admire and discuss.

Too many to list them all, but some of the best species we saw were Grevillea rigida (Red Toothbrush Grevillea), Banksia media (Southern Plains Banksia), Lambertia inermis (Chittick), Lechenaultia tubiflora (Heath Lechenaultia), Stylidium albomontis (Trigger Plant), Elythranthera brunonis (Purple enamel Orchid), Diuris corymbosa (Common Donkey Orchid), various species of Hibertia, Goodenia, Verticordia, Hakea and I could go on and on… I have to admit that the

Visitors impressed with walk

group had their ‘Orchid spying eyes’ on as they were the ones who spotted the orchids despite my searching!

Some of the track displayed the charred remnants of a recent burn-off to one side of it. This led to interesting conversation about the benefits of burning for bush regeneration, and about different seeds and germination processes.

We stopped into the Dunn Brothers Shepherds cottage to imagine the old days of shepherding and moving of stock across the country side.

After approximately an 8km walk, some of us proceeded to Wavecrest Bistro for a lovely lunch and well eearned rest.

Thanks to all the participants for their enthusiasm and fun.

—Donna Higgins, HCRC

as a Wildflower Show and an Anglican Wool Day many years ago. The flower show leads the event, bringing travellers of around 2500 in number, and no doubt soon to increase to 3000. Then comes the Country Carnival where Ravensthorpe crafters display their skills and their versatility to the eager passersby. The Grand Parade on the middle Saturday brought the locals out in force and with help from our locally operating mine; an enthusiastic audience was spellbound by a superb historical fashion parade; and finally, the day was crowned with what seemed like a never ending fireworks display. As I hit the second cuppa (the long table lunch required much lubrication of a different type as well) the thought came to me

To the editorI find myself relaxing after the Sunday Long-Table Lunch at the Jerdacuttup Hall, and so reflect on what a great time has been had by all those who availed themselves of the ‘Ravensthorpe Spring Festival. What has morphed into a Two-week Grand Spring Festival, started off

of just how many people are involved in our community to run or cook for two weeks of Devonshire Teas, and lunches of soup and fresh bread; to pick enough wildflowers to fill the town hall for two weeks and make sure they looked bright and fresh every day; to run an art gallery, a craft shop, tag along wildflower tours, local wildflower bus tours, guided walks in the bush, the street parade, then the Country Carnival, with stalls inside and out, not to mention an historic wedding dress fashion parade. ‘Where does it end’ you may ask> Well it ends with a wonderful, beautifully cooked Sunday lunch, organised by the RAIN group.Fitzgerald River National Park and its sister hot spot the Ravensthorpe Range has been recognised by UNESCO and the scientific world as a world treasure, declaring it a major hot spot for its diversity of flora which occurs on

soil types, local, native, and ancient - not just thousands of years old but millions. As luck would have it, this is our own back yard. The native Spring flower array arrives of its own accord every year. The wonderful coastal views, and the inland vistas roll on to the horizon and will continue to attract more and more travellers. Gold brought the original white settlers here and as it ran out the settlers turned to agriculture. Lately we have seen the return to mining, and its fickle on-again off-again rhythms. But our native beauty, if left quietly alone will attract travellers forever, and our community grows as the keepers of such wonders, for other people to admire. If you live here get involved, it’s rewarding, it’s fun, and all those like-minded local people need your help.

—Yours Goldy

Meet Tim Flannagan our local legend!!!!Tim walked from Hopetoun to Ravensthorpe on the October 1st to raise money for the Heart Foundation. Tim is an avid walker, seen most days walking either on the beach or out to the national park.

Tim signed up to My Marathon under the Hopetoun Progress Company Team and decided to walk the 51.5 km along side the Hopetoun-Ravensthorpe road.

Tim said that he has driven that road for 55 years and decided it might be time to walk it. He tells us that there was just so much to see and he loved every minute of the 11 hours he took to complete the mission.

Tim was very grateful for the rain the night previous as he needed to drink from the puddles along the way. He is very humbled by all the support he has received and thanks you all very much.

Tim has a keen interest in the work of the Heart Foundation as he has had 5 heart bypasses. Be like Tim and get your shoes on and get your heart pumping. So far, he has raised over $1000.

Little Beat-Bop to continue in term 4We have had lots of fun over the past four weeks at Little Beat-Bop, so we are continuing the fun through term 4.

Little Beat-Bop is an energetic session with music, singing and percussion instruments which offers lots of fun as well are promoting all-round child development—cognitive, social and emotional, communication and language, fine and gross motor skills.

Children can copy the actions or choose to move freely to the music with their instruments.

Older children and adults are encouraged to follow the actions to really get the heart rate going. Small percussion instruments are used throughout the session.

A few minutes of sit-down and cool down at the end when the children are encouraged to explore playing instruments such as xylophones and tambourines to beautiful gentle folk music, helps their heart rate slow down and helps to calm the children, ready for storytime at the CRC at 10am.

Open to all children up to the age of 5 with under twos able to participate for free. Individual class price is $10 but we have reduced block payment options—whole 9 week term for $67.50 or a booklet of 5 tickets to be used flexibly over the term for $45.

Call the CRC on 9838 3062 or register online at www.hopetounwa.com for the reduced block bookings.

This first WAPC workshop focussed on the use of new digital technology for sheep systems.

The WAPC was launched in February this year as a major new initiative instigated by the Stirlings to Coast Farmers group. The new Co-operative is now operational and has attracted a lot of interest from farmers who are choosing to join as shareholders and active members.

The WAPC workshop is all about the practical use of new digital tools and equipment with demonstrations to be held live in the Moorilda sheep yards.

Event organisers, the new WAPC CEO, Dr Christine Kershaw and WAPC Chair, Ken Drummond also provided a progress update on the new co-operative for members.

The workshop program included presentations from Sandy Forbes (Royston SAMM and White Dorpers stud), a newly elected WAPC Board Director. Sandy talked about how digital tools can help farmers to select better performing sheep by using Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) to improve

production efficiencies and meat quality.

Sheep equipment supplier, Te Pari demonstrated their precision sheep handling equipment and Beth Green (DPIRD) spoke on the importance of meat traceability and biosecurity regulations.

Brett Matthews from Shearwell Australia talked about how to choose the right digital ear tags and readers and Mike Kirke from Rural Data Management presented practical examples of how to link the data collected from the new digital technology to existing farm management systems.

Sweet visit for competitors

■ Competitors on their way to Yummylicious

RAIN Wrap2019 has certainly had its challenges for RAIN members – drought, frost events and warm September winds meaning expected yields have been downplayed significantly for many.

Growers are hoping for more rain in the following weeks to ensure grain fill.

September has had everyone as busy as ever with agricultural field days, sports and the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show and Spring Festival – an event which really showcases our community and unique environment.

The Jerdacuttup Top Crop kicked off the RAIN Spring Field Days on the September 10th.

RAIN Wrap

■ From page 12

It was a warm day however 24+ growers met in the arvo for an informal crop crawl. Sites/ topics covered included barley crop responses to limestone ridges, potential on-farm lime sources, flowering frost (not a common event for the area), SEPWA wheat, canola and long season wheat variety trials.

The group concluded at the Port Hotel for a community catch up and to enjoy Chase the Ace.

The West River Spring field day kicked off the following day.

Over 70 attendees joined with the majority of them being local growers. Great to see so many people together, especially given the stress of the frost events the previous week.

The event opened and closed at Duncan’s impressive new shearing shed. Ben White (Kondinin Group) commenced the event with some timely stored grain pointers and some insight to emerging technologies in the ag space.

Confined feeding was discussed at a nearby paddock – topical given the recent dry years.

We visited some impressive vetch at Mudie’s, checked out the SEPWA barley and wheat variety trials, had a chat with Megan Jones (CCDM) about the Net Blotch disease project and enjoyed a demo of the Weedseeker 2 ISOBUS spot spraying system thanks to the McIntosh boys from Esperance.

The Department of Water, Envionment & Regulation spoke about Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate

Schemes, welcoming support for those applying.

Kuiper’s showed some perennial pastures and the new vertical integrated Harrington seed destructor. Decision making for livestock in the dry was again discussed at a site and a ripping trial at Mudie’s concluded the visits.

We’ve received great feedback from all that attended. The group was complimented on the high level of discussion and willingness to share their personal knowledge and experiences. Peer-to-peer learning at its finest! Way to go RAIN.

The Lakes Grower Group (sub-group to RAIN) held their event on September 17th. A big thank you to Ross Dunkeld (Landmark Lake King) who is the group’s trial coordinator and tee’d up most of the day.

24 attendees joined the afternoon. Sites included SEPWA variety trials, a HeVa ripper demo, BASF herbicide, pastures, Carbon

Ag pellets and a rye grass trial. The event concluded at the Lake King Tavern for a Bunge sponsored sundowner.

Thanks to our event sponsors including SEPWA, Rabo Bank, Flexi Grain, GRDC and Grainbrokers.

—oOo—

RAIN also supported the wildflower show with several activities including a guided marine walk and the Wildflower Gala Lunch at the Jerdacuttup Hall which hosted 90.

The event had a theme of Kwongan which is the type of vegetation predominantly found in the area.

Professor Hans Lambers gave some insight to why we have such impressive flora on our gutless soils.

Thanks to South Coast NRM for supporting the event via the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

—oOo—

Frost has been far reaching in the Shire and in areas

not typically impacted. It appears to have stretched right to the coast with Munglinup, Hopetoun and Jerdacuttup growers also affected. Dr Ben Biddulph (DPIRD) was in the area on September 20th and met with 15 growers in the Jerdacuttup area to discuss frost identification and management options.

—oOo—

The RAIN AGM will be held on Friday October 11th. The meeting will start at 3pm in the Ravensthorpe Community Centre Red Room.

We’ll head out to the old vineyard (off Carlingup Road) for a campout afterwards. All welcome!

■ RAVENSTHORPE EQUESTRIAN CLUB

The September long weekend saw 49 riders descend upon the REC grounds in Ravensthorpe coming from Esperance and as far as Albany to compete against each other, but with a total of over $7000 in prizes and money up for grabs a I am not surprised.

These amazing prizes wouldn’t be possible without our amazing sponsors, especially our major sponsor ACH Contractors. Not only did they donate an awesome amount of money Amy also came and tirelessly helped all weekend by scoring for us, which was not easy, so thank you Amy. Also thank you to all of the helpers and sponsors for the weekend—each one of you, it means a great deal to have your ongoing support every year.

For anyone that doesn’t know what a gymkhana involves , it is comprised of series of games on horseback which requires riders to show various skillsets, whether bending around poles standing up on bases or putting tin cans in drums that they have to take off of the top of the poles.

The riders need to be able to control their horses whilst letting go of the reins with one hand to grab required objects and when we go up the divisions it requires riders to get off to retrieve balls that need to be dropped into buckets on the way back down the poles or blocks stacked up on top of each other on top of a drum they need to lean down to reach all the whilst getting their horses to turn around said drum to race back to the end for the next one. What a load of fun and excitement it is watch let alone participate—it really gets the adrenaline pumping.

Saturday morning started with the Lead line and First Ridden. These kids have the most fantastic sportsmanship, with them cheering each other on, the parents running their little hearts out—luckily for them this year we limited it to a trot!

After lunch saw the Novice Juniors compete in this division. Riders are not allowed above a canter—it is for confident riders that aren’t ready to let their horse gallop or for novice horses that haven’t been to a games day before and need to go steady. But nevertheless, it didn’t stop the riders from racing their horses up and down the lines bending and weaving around drums and canter home for the win.

The last event for the day was Open Junior. These kids may be still young but they are not afraid to gallop. It was exciting watching these riders race up and down at heart racing speeds making it look too easy, all the while with smiles on their faces, having a great time.

Finishing the day off, the Club threw a free sausage sizzle with delicious sausages kindly donated by Pink Lake Butchers. Having a munch, a yarn and a laugh at the day’s events and just relaxing it was a pleasant way to end the day before the next day’s games.

Sunday morning started with the Adult Beginners which the Juniors also entered to make up numbers and make the event more fun. But in this division, riders aren’t allowed to let their horses above a trot and they must ride different horses than the day before. This took more skill than letting them canter but with the usual gusto and flair the juniors exhibit, much fun was had by all.

Now it was time for the Adult Novice to line up and give it a go and that’s exactly what they did. Even though not going above a canter they still were racing up and down the rows at a decent pace. With a few horses never having done games, I know many of the spectators as well as myself were impressed at how well the riders managed to control their horses and make them go in the direction they want even though they ended up at the other end of the starting line.

If you know the way horses think at all those drums and poles will eat a horse as quick as look at it, they might have huge bodies but they have teeny hearts when it comes to courage, it takes a lot of convincing to tell them otherwise but with much encouragement and urging they managed to finish the race still on top of the horse.

After a quick lunch break it was time to break the big guns out. It was time for the Male and Female Open riders to take their places at the starting line. Now this division have no fear and galloping your horse is a way of life and that’s what makes an entertaining and exciting division to watch.

The spectators certainly had a show with fast paced turns, whilst grabbing cans off poles and racing to the drum to drop it in and race for the next one it was non- stop action. Riders were yelling, spectators were cheering and I don’t know about the riders, but it was exhilarating to watch let alone ride in.

But with the astounding amount of prize money on offer we had to have a winner, although they were all winners in my eyes. Everyone rode amazingly and should all be very proud of themselves.

Even though we had the fantastic St John Ambulance Volunteeers on hand (thank you so much St Johns Ambos—we appreciate you very much) we didn’t have any need for them.

MUSCLE AND TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

Trigger points or muscle “knots” are sensitive spots in soft tissue, and too many of them is

“myofascial pain syndrome.” They are usually described as micro-cramps.

Trigger point therapy mostly consists of rubbing and pressing on trigger points — which can feel like an amazing . Advanced therapy for people with many stubborn trigger points gives relief of symptoms and generally gives better movement to the area. There are no actual knots in there, of course — it just feels like it. Although their true nature is uncertain, the usual explanation is that a trigger point is a small patch of tightly contracted muscle, a micro-cramp afflicting just a tiny patch of muscle tissue. With each treatment it eases the knot and give relief.

Things Trigger point and muscle Therapy helps 1. Headaches2. Sciatica 3. Knee problems 4. Neck problems5. Pins and needles in arms or legs6. Sore jaw7. Teeth grinding8. Back problems

■ HOPETOUN GOLF

Ravensthorpe golfer Justin Edwards has won the 2019 Hopetoun’s Men’s Open day sponsored by Esperance Toyota.

A field of 32 golfers from around the district had a very enjoyable and competitive day of golf on Sunday September 28th.

Justin had a great score of 60 Stableford points to win from Paul Webb with a very credible 57 points. A good effort for Webby considering he had not shut up about Richmond apparently winning some inconsequential football game the day before.

Gross winner on the day was Brad Lewis from Scaddan with Hopetoun’s Mark Cameron a close runner up.

As well as golfers from our district golf association, we also had the Bruce Rock bandit “Angry” Allan Jarvis back for a game—always great to see Al and Kath back in Hopetoun.

Edwards wins Hopetoun Golf Club Men’s Open Day

Saturday’s competition was a mixed stableford event with some of the players in the Open day arriving early to play in that event.

Our Men’s Club Championships were held on Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st with Ian Risborough adding to his large collection of Club Championships with another well-deserved victory. Mark Cameron was again the runner up, exactly as last year’s result. Well done Risey.

Geoff Parr also had a good couple of days and took out the Nett event from Wayne Galloway.

Our next event of note is closing day for the winter season on Saturday October 12th. As well as a game of golf there will be a meal following the presentations.

As the busiest time of the Golf season comes to an end, I think it is important to acknowledge the great effort of our Ladies members.

They may be few in number, but the effort and hours they put in to cater for the events are extraordinary. Without their hard work and culinary expertise, the club would struggle to remain viable.

I have heard a buzz that the Club Treasurer is planning a special event to thank the Ladies, stay tuned.
