Next Wednesday will mark the 100th day of school, which means we are more than half way through the year. It has been an exciting first semester at Palestine ISD. The District has been fortunate to be able to provide additional learning opportunities with help from the 21st Century Grant Award. The grant provided, twenty-five High School students the opportunity to graduate this past fall, and many students have received additional learning in extended day programs. Not only are staff members spending extra time helping students; students are helping out as well. The Paw Pals Program matches our seniors with Washington Early Childhood Center 4 year old students, and Tutoring Times 2 is a new program in which PJHS eighth grade students who model good behavior

travel to A.M. Story Intermediate each week to provide mentoring for fourth grade students. It is a great thing for students to give their time to help other students become successful. PHS students will be participating in PHS YMCA Youth & Government this year. Two of our students were elected last year to serve on the YMCA Youth & Government State Board for this upcoming state convention – Chris Winfield & Abby Earle. Our students meet every Monday from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Our two trial teams also meet every Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Courthouse to work with two of our local attorneys from the District Attorney’s office.  Our State Convention in Austin at the Capital is set for January 30th – February 2nd.  Our students will be participating in Trial Team (where they participate in Mock Trial – attorneys are required to take a test before district, as well as judges), Media (students report on happenings at district and state via newsprint, broadcast media, and cybermedia (blogs, Twitter, Facebook), Legislative (delegates present bills proposing laws or amendments to laws for passage on the floor), State Affairs (delegates are given chosen topics to debate the pro or con issue and try to get passage on the floor), United Nations Model (students are given countries to represent in UN discussions to set tariffs, trade agreements, etc.)  - as well as running for upcoming offices. Thank you for supporting our students and the Youth & Government program which is celebrating its 23rd year here at PHS!

The PHS family teamed up with Carter Blood center once again to give the gift of life. Special thanks to Kathleen Brown and the Palestine High School National Honor Society for all their hard work and preparation for making this event such a success.

Starting last Friday, January 24, our Palestine Junior High eighth grade students will be getting the opportunity to go to Story to help tutor fourth grade students. This is a great opportunity for our students to showcase not only the skills they have learned in the classroom, but to learn about leadership and responsibility. Students will rotate every six weeks and be nominated by teachers based on how well they represent our school in character and responsibility.

Tutoring Times 2 first met in a wildly successful venture this past Friday at Story Intermediate.  The program pairs eighth graders from PJHS and fourth graders from Story in an academic learning environment.  At the Junior High level, the program serves as an incentive for eighth grade students who must model good behavior in order to be eligible to participate.  Several students from PJHS were nominated by their teachers with only twenty participants selected to take part in the program.  On Fridays, the eighth graders bus over to Story to tutor and mentor some of our fourth graders. This program allows for the development of mentoring relationships between the older and younger students as well as allows for model academic behaviors to be demonstrated by the older students to the younger students.  Scott Tyler helped to organize the program at PJHS with the help of Michelle Moore-Parker at Story.  Mrs. Moore-Parker and Eric Higginbotham work in coordination to facilitate a cross-curricular learning environment for the students on the Story campus.

On Thursday, January 23, 52 “Dads” and their children enjoyed donuts, coffee, and juice while they learned about Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) at Story. Mr. Quarles explained the program, and several current Watch D.O.G.S. shared their experiences. Ten new Watch D.O.G.S. put their name on the calendar to serve at least one day at Story.  Thanks to all the “Dads” who came out to support Story and the Watch D.O.G.S. Program.
