Wild black bears live in our area.A female bear weighs 200 lbs. on average.A male bear weighs 400 lbs. on average.Treat all wild animals with respect.

If you meet a wild bear, makeyour presence known by clappingand making loud noises. 1

If a bear stands on it’s hind legs, it is onlytrying to see or smell better. Never comebetween a female bear and her cubs.

At home, hang bird feeders at least 10 feet high.Take them down at dusk. Keep all garbage cans inside.Do not feed pets outside.

If you see a bear while playing outside,walk slowly inside. DO NOT RUN!Tell an adult.Never look a bear directly in the eyes.Do not corner the bear.Bears can run 35 mph. 4

When camping, do not keep food or thingsthat smell like food in your tent.Keep food in air tight containers insidethe trunk of a car.NEVER FEED THE BEARS!

Do not put your lunch in your backpack,carry it in your hand. If you see a bear,drop your lunch and walk to safety.Protect all outside pets. 6

While hiking in bear country,keep pets on a leash, makenoise as you walk and keepyour eyes open for bears.

If bears learn that people will give themfood they may become dangerous.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife says:“IF YOU REALLY CARE DON’T FEED THE BEARS!” 8
