PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

Hello Everyone!

How is everybody been doing? This has been quite a year already

with all the cancellations, etc. This will include canceling our

Christmas gathering on December 9. Darn it!

Thanks Luann for reminding us about the baby basket. Bernie

was able to give a gift certificate for the first baby born during

HCE week, the first week in November.

There are so many events and activities that are still up in the

air. So it is hard to plan too far ahead. Hopefully by our next

newsletter in February we’ll be able to get back in the swing of

things.

We are saddened to hear about Annabelle Sharp passing

away. She was 93, a member of Sparta Center. I know she will be

dearly missed in our organization.

The holidays are here, I hope you are keeping in touch with your

friends and members. Don’t forget to send in your $10.00 dues to

Bernie.

In Memoriam

Mary Annabelle Sharp passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at the age of 93.

Annabelle lived in Sparta all her life except while she was in nurses training in La Crosse.

She was part of St. Mary’s Community for 37 years. Annabelle was a member of the Farmers Valley HCE Club and the Westside HCE Club. She currently was co-president of the Westside HCE Club. She volunteered for many different causes including our Wisconsin Bookworms reading program.

Her presence will be greatly missed.

First Baby Boy Receives Gift Card

Carson Robert Eirschele was the first baby born during HCE week. He arrived on Sunday, November 1, 2020. He weighed seven pounds and eleven ounces and was nineteen and a half inches long.

Proud parents are Brent and Lindsey Eirschele of Tomah. Carson has two sisters at home—Camryn and Maya.

Grandparents are Don and Cherlyn Moseley of Warrens and Luann Eirschele of Tomah and Mike and Barb Eirschele of Tomah.

My family just tried this recipe recently (see picture below) and it has already

Butternut Squash Apple Cranberry Bake Recipe Ingredients

1 large butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

2 large tart cooking apples (like Granny Smith), peeled and cut into ½-inch thick

slices

½ cup fresh or frozen cranberries

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup (half a stick) butter

1 Tablespoon flour

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg or mace

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly butter the sides

and bottom of a 7x11-inch baking dish. Mix together

the flour, brown sugar, salt, and nutmeg in a small

bowl. Put a layer of cut butternut squash on the

bottom of the baking dish. Place apples on top and

then sprinkle with cranberries. Sprinkle everything

with the flour brown sugar mixture. Dot with butter.

Bake 50-60 minutes at 350 degrees until cooked

through and lightly browned.

December is Write to a Friend Month

When was the last time you wrote to a friend rather than typed? While

technology makes it easier for us to connect with each other within seconds, many

say they miss receiving letters and cards in the mail. Whether you're writing a letter

or a Christmas card, use this month as a chance to give someone a surprise by

sending them something that isn't read via the screen on a computer or a phone.

One way to celebrate Write to a Friend Month is to put pen to paper and write

to someone you haven't spoken to in awhile. Regular white lined paper is fine, but

considering how rare it is that someone gets a handwritten letter, make it extra

special by writing the letter on a beautiful piece of paper or in a decorative card.

Once you start writing letters, think about keeping it up with a few friends rather

than using email.

It's appropriate that Write to a Friend Month is in December considering

there's quite a few Christmas cards that need to go out. Use both occasions as an

excuse to start writing more letters and rely less on the instant gratification of

technology.

The Action for Happiness website states, 2020 has been a difficult year in so many

ways. We have suffered with uncertainty, anxiety, isolation and challenges with our

financial situation, health or relationships. One thing that can hold us together and

help us get through is kindness. Although w e can't change our situation, w e

can choose to respond to others (and ourselves) with kindness. And when we're kind,

everything goes better. We help others, we help ourselves and we encourage others to

be kinder too.
