Wi-Fi IFE Installation Program (VAA)
VAA has retrofitted its fleet of B737NG & E190 aircraft with Gate-to-Gate Wi-Fi via STC
The retrofit program required one STC to cover the system installation, and one STC to allow T-PED usage
Existing B737NG aircraft with in-seat IFE were de-modified to provide IFE product consistency across the fleet
Level of De-mod included removal of LCD screens, seat-seat wiring, IFE equipment racks, antenna, radome, seat back shrouds (installation)
Gate-to-Gate connectivity is offered on Wi-Fi retrofitted VAA aircraft free of charge
NOTE: Wi-Fi IFE provide wireless transmission of stored content on boardGround real-time connectivity to follow

Passenger Experience Passengers use their own device
iOS, Android, Microsoft Familiarity Speed
Customizable Can be changed with an update of an app
APP Downloads Substantial increase in download of APP to facilitate access to the Wi-Fi Entertainment Data indicates download by user devices split of approximately:
70% for iOS 28% for Android
9
Passenger Experience Over 300 Hours of entertainment content
TV-Streaming and Connectivity integration
Over the air updates (News / Weather / Sports/ Business) via Cell modem integrated with Server (at gate)
Passenger – Airline interaction Shop, connecting gate, in-flight service, PRAM,
survey
Passenger – Passenger interaction Seat-Seat Chat
The longer the flight, the more passengers take advantage of the free service Number of users on a 5 hour flight is twice that of a
2 hour flight

Substantial Weight Savings* through reduction in installation of in-seat IFE components
In-seat screens
Hand-held controllers
Seat – seat wiring
LRUs
Antenna (IFE system dependant)
* ~ 250 kg / aircraft estimated for B737NG aircraft translates to Fuel Savings

1. TPED Approvals and Configuration Control
Aircraft and components must be TPED approved, DO307/DO294 Strict TPED configuration control
2. Passenger Awareness
Downloaded APP Pre-flight SMS Boarding gate promotion On-Board announcements
3. Inventory Management
Airline Owned Devices (on board)
Challenges post Wi-Fi IFE Installation

1. Maintenance Costs
Maintenance program – no scheduled Maintenance requirements Unscheduled Maintenance – quick LRU replacement & recovery of service T-PED testing & certification costs T-PED compatibility (components) for new aircraft deliveries – similarity analysis
2. Reliability Program
On-condition monitoring of LRU Reliability Component MTBUR analysis
3. IFE Content Changes - Monthly updates
Physical Loading via SSD (~ 4 Hours per Load for 600 GB of data) SSD Swap (Option) – quicker process but introduces Configuration Controls for SSD Cabin Data Loader (Option) – reduces upload time Wi-Fi via Laptop (considered for smaller content loading)
