Why Transceivers Matter
Ø Op#cal transceivers are hot-‐pluggable units used for data transmission over fiber op#c networks at speeds of 10/100/1000 Mbps and 10/40 Gbps
§ 100 Gbps available Ø The most common units are the SFP or Small Form-‐factor
pluggable op#c. Ø These units also come in mul#ple form factors such as
SFP, SFP+, XFP, X2, Xenpak and GBIC with support for CWDM, DWDM and Bi-‐Direc#onal

Ø Optical Transceivers are standard form factor § A SFP from one vendor will fit into SFP slot from another vendor Ø Transceivers can be compatible with most Vendors § With the proper software loaded on Transceiver, a 3rd party Transceiver
will be 100% compatible § Cost of 3rd party Transceivers is much less than OEM in most cases
Ø Like computer memory in the 90’s, Optical Transceivers are becoming a commodity
§ Vendors can offer a “Try and Buy” to test compatibility

additional capacity § Passive equipment § Transceivers can support CWDM, DWDM & Bi-Directional
