What Is A Book Trailer, Exactly?

According to Wikipedia, “A book trailer is a video advertisement for a book which employs techniques similar to those of movie trailers. They are circulated on television and online in most common digital video formats.”

The term "book trailer" is currently a trademarked term owned by Sheila Clover of Circle of Seven Productions. The first book trailer to be played publicly was at a book convention in Shreveport, LA. in 2003. The trailer was for a book entitled “Dark Symphony” by author Christine Feehan.

Though book trailers were being made as early as 2002, the term caught on in 2005 when user-generated online video upload became more popular. Sites such as MySpace, YouTube and iFilm allowed for the videos to be viewed by the public, creating a market for this promotional tool.

Book Trailers can be acted out, full production trailers, flash videos, animation or simple still photos set to music with text conveying the story”

About Me

HistoryI came to the book trailer field as a filmmaker and author. Sarah Langan was running a contest for a book trailer for her superb novel THE MISSING. I gathered some friends and ended up winning the contest. It sparked my imagination. I could blend both my love for books with my talent and skill as a filmmaker.

Book TrailersThe projects I’ve worked on have varied greatly from project to project. I’ve done everything from mainstream, like the Springsteen anthology, “Darkness On The Edge” to hardcore horror, like the two Gord Rollo trailers.

Animation to Live ActionThe difference between live action and animation can be drastic. I strive to do the higher budget live-action shoots, as the trailer will represent the book. If it is super-low budget, a live-action shoot can be a big turn-off. I work within the client’s budget to try and get the best game plan for their books. As I am also a published writer, I feel I understand writers and love working with them to put a sliver of their dreams into their book trailer.

So What’s It Cost?

ANIMATIONThis type of trailer is dependent on moving text and images. “The Castle Of Los Angeles” and “Crimson” are prime examples of how this can be done effectively and cheaply. Typically can be done anywhere from $200-$500, depending on how complex the client wants to go. Most trailers end up running about $350 in the end.

LIVE ACTIONThe sky’s the limit here. Each book brings its own set of unique characters and circumstances. Do you want to bring together several snippets from several scenes in the book (See “Far Dark Fields”) or maybe just one spooky scene, like in, “The Missing” book trailer? Do you just want some voice over? These types of trailers start around $500 and can go up from there. I usually work with the client and see what we can accomplish with their budget.

AUTHOR INTERVIEWSIn addition to book trailers, it is also common for a book promotional campaign to include a professionally shot and edited short-form interview with the author. These can be used to further sell and promote the book. Again, the budgets for these vary by project and individual client needs.

MUSICFor most trailers I’ve composed and recorded a custom theme. We can substitute royalty-free tracks as well.

What Can I Do With A Book Trailer?

Promotion Using sites such as YouTube to promote your book is a given. There are other ways to get your book trailer shown. I can work with clients on several other outlets and venues to get the book trailers seen. A book trailer gives you something else...something visual and immediate...to promote your book to a wider audience.

FormatsWith the ever changing digital landscape, we’re seeing new video formats developing all the time. Internet video has come a long way, even in the last three years.

I’ll work to deliver your video in one or more formats to suit your promotional needs.
