A note for visitors: We’re thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin and insert. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice of dividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goal of worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be a

community that understands the specic gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to take advantageof child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the Kitchen off of the entryway. All parents are provided with vibrating beepers to inform them should anything come up requiring their attention.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the servicebegins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and reect upon the past week. When you’re ready, you might say the following prayer or one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affectionswe may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ our Lord.

 Amen.

 All sit.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesusstanding at the right hand of God; and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and theSon of man standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out with a loud voice andstopped their ears and rushed together upon him. Then they cast him out of the city andstoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man namedSaul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Andhe knelt down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

The Psalm of the day:

 Remain seated

 Psalm 31:1-5,15-16

 In te, Domine, speravi

1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;let me never be put to shame; *deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Incline your ear to me; *make haste to deliver me.

3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; *for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *for you are my tower of strength.

5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, *for you have redeemed me,O Lord, O God of truth.

15 My times are in your hand; *rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, *and in your loving-kindness save me.”

Second Reading:   1 Peter 2:2-10

A Reading from the First letter of Peter.

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up intosalvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen andprecious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be aholy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For itstands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his ownpossession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darknessinto his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can weknow the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comesto the Father, but by me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also;henceforth you know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us theFather, and we shall be satised.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say,‘show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in

me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believeme for the sake of the works themselves. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go tothe Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be gloried inthe Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Please stand, kneel or sit at this time, as best helps you to pray.

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom

and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that,in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When ourdisobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In yourmercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might nd you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope forsalvation.

Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Sonto be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulll your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new.

And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, hesent the Holy Spirit, his own rst gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulllment the sanctication of all. When the hour had come for himto be gloried by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, heloved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanksto you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which

is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this forthe remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption.Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection andascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from thegifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you,and we pray to you,Lord our God

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, andupon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living

sacrice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholicand apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard itsfaith, and preserve it in peace.

Remember all who minister in your Church.Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth.

 A Note on Today’s Readings

The Fifth Sunday of Easter—Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. We begin today the fth of the seven weeks of theChristian year set apart to celebrate the dying and rising of Jesus. The Gospel readingtoday is a discussion between Jesus and his disciples, particularly Thomas and Philip, about the results of his dying and rising. He is revealed to be the Way into eternal life, and

in knowing Jesus we know and are known by the Father.

Today’s reading from Acts describes the martyrdom of Stephen, the rst Christian to sufferdeath for the name of Christ. This is itself a particularly strong witness to the resurrectionof Jesus; as Stephen joins his Lord in dying he sees Jesus raised from the dead and leadinghim into God’s eternal kingdom.

In the second reading today Peter applies to us the words of God to the people of Israelduring their Exodus. By virtue of our baptism into Jesus’ dying and rising, we are set apart

as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,” with the vocationof making God’s wonderful deeds known to all people.

In the Eucharistic celebration, we are revealed as the royal priesthood. In most religions, the priesthood is a small group of people who stand between God and the rest of thepeople. Christians, however, all stand before God on behalf of the entire human race; on behalf, indeed, of the whole creation. That priesthood is enacted most clearly as we stand before God in intercession and in thanksgiving in the Eucharistic liturgy.
